Pina's Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Exceptionally delicious Italian food at reasonable prices served with much love in an unprepossessing setting.
Pina's covers all the usual Italian bases, augmented by a changing list of specials. Veal chop special was huge, perfectly cooked and seasoned, served with a side of linguine with a light oil-garlic topping that matched very well. The crab ravioli special came in a creamy, light tomato sauce, that reinforced but didn't overpower the delicate crab.
We quickly gobbled up a bowl of clams in a heady wine-garlic broth; there wasn't much of the sauce left after we finished dipping bread in it. Calamari in a slightly spicy tomato-caper-black olive sauce went equally fast, again dipping our bread into what was left of the tasty sauce. The chef cheerfully responded to our request for a not-on-the-menu antipasto to share, offering a delicious selection of cold cuts, olives, pepperoncini, and cheese. Everything is cooked to order, & the chef is happy to create dishes not on the menu.
The wine list is small, but includes a good selection of bottles from reasonable to expensive. The staff is helpful in selecting wine, as well as in providing details on the food.
We finished with cannoli (home made filling, with a few chocolate chips at each end!) that offered just the right amount of sweetness to finish our meal. Espresso and cappuccino were prepared beautifully by the barista-grandson who helps out on weekends, and by the daughter-waitress-hostess during the week.
This is a family restaurant that welcomes you as if you were a part of the family. If you like Italian food, do not pass up the chance to eat at Pina's table. While the setting is simple, they serve food worthy of "big name" restaurants with a genuine warmth for their guests that you rarely encounter these days. Frankly, I hesitated to write this review for fear that it'll make it impossible to get a table at this tiny gem, but the food is too good to keep secret!
Pina's was recommended by a co-worker, so we sought it out. How could we have missed this great little restaurant for the past 22 years right in our back yard! It's small, so reservations are a good idea. Pina took our order and told us about her pastas and sauces. She hand makes much of what is on the menu. I had the lobster ravioli and it was excellent. We will be back!
For over 20 years, our dinners and lunches at PINA’S BISTRO have always been the high point of our trips to So. Calif. Pina, her daughters and excellent staff are so dedicated to serving top quality, fresh Italian cuisine as it is made in the countryside around Napoli where Pina was born. When you first walk into this charming little restaurant, the aroma from the kitchen puts a smile on your face.
The magic of PINA’S BISTRO is that she has mastered so many of the reasons for going to an Italian restaurant: a hardy welcome; delicious bread; freshly made pasta; flavorful tomato sauces that are worthy of a detour from Los Angeles’ eateries; housemade Italian sausage; her delicate vinaigrette for salads. The Bistro’s large and varied menu is supplemented by Pina’s blackboard of changing daily entrées, such as lobster stuffed ravioli, Chilean sea bass in her arrabbiata sauce and filet mignon prepared Italian style.
If you’re looking for a restaurant that has mastered Italian-Napolitano cuisine, try PINA’S BISTRO. It’s a real gem!
I love this place. Family owned and operated. Great food. The best salad ever. the mozzarella is a must try it's the real deal, no breaded cheese sticks here. Our favs are the veal chop, the filet and there's a pasta dish with a cream sauce, Pina's homemade sausage and sweet peas - yum!
I've eaten at a lot of Italian restaurants and Pina's hands down beats them all. From the appetizers to the main course and desert everything is real authentic Italian. I've hosted two business lunches and had dinner with my family and everyone loved the food and service. I highly recommend Pina's and know we will be back.
This restaurant if very small. You have to make reservations to sit inside. There are about 10 tables inside. If you don't make a reservation you will have to sit on the patio. It isn't bad out there but a heater may not be enough in the cold weather. The staff is very friendly and the food is pretty good. It's pricey. But it's a cute little place to try. I will go again, but only special occasions like my recent visit. The restaurant is in a little shopping center. The exterior is a little off-putting, but the food and staff were very good.
Pina's Bistro is very small, seating about 30 inside and outside. We dined with a screaming infant outside, but there was also one inside, so there was no escaping that at 7 at night. Wishing parents would dine at 5 if they must bring their babies along.
We arrived early, had to wait until one of the 3 staff could clean and reset a table for us. The waiting area is outside in front of the shop next door or the 7-11. Parties waiting after us bought wine and started drinking it while hanging out on the sidewalk.
Pina's tries hard. They will alter their menu items to suit your taste or health no problems. The issue is the food isn't that good. Starting with the bread they put on the table - why is no one in OC baking really good crusty Italian bread and selling it to all the restaurants like Pina's? The bread is soft and doughy, no one in Italy would eat it.
Dinner entrees come with a salad, a very boring salad. My eggplant parm looked great, but the plate was soon swimming in water - did they forget to drain my pasta? Everyone at our table had the same issue - water doesn't help taste at all.
If you really want to try Pina's make a reservation, and good luck.
I have always enjoyed the food here, despite the run down atmosphere. My chicken piccata, which I have ordered a couple times before, was not good. Very bready and not cooked well at all. I was really disappointed. We also felt ignored by the waitress. Won't be rushing back. I don't know why she doesn't move location and upgrade the interior.
As always Pina's Bistro doesn't disappoint with the food, service and welcoming hello from Pina the owner. Every time we go, the food is always delicious and a reason to rush back soon. Peggy and Felicia as our servers were beyond attentive and just delights to know. The Sausage and Peppers, Linguini with clams and salmon were beyond great! A must!
What is the reason why Pina's Bistro only gets five stars? Answer: Because they don't offer six or anything higher. We were visiting our daughter from out of town. She is attending Chapman Univ. but lives in Tustin. We looked up restaurants in the area and discovered Pina's Bistro. It was TERRIFIC. There is a reason why they have been in business in the same location for the past 23 years. The food is really as authentic as you can get it unless you travel to Italy. I've been to Italy and this restaurant beats most of those restaurants as well. If you have a salad you will be hooked on their dressing. We purchased two bottles. It is to die for! It should be mass produced and sold across the country! You won't be sorry by going to this restaurant, believe me. The family who owns the restaurant is from a town called Benevento, not far from Naples, Italy. Buon Appetito!
As always the owner and staff welcomed us warmly. The food was delicious. I couldn't decide which of our four main dishes was the best! It's like visiting your Italian grandma's house- only better. Pina graciously fine tuned some of our dishes. And the limoncello cake!!!!
Pina's is a fantastic little Italian place! Most nights you will find mama in the kitchen cooking with her daughters serving the most wonderful home-cooked style Italian meal. It's so good and comfortable, you'll forget that you are in a restaurant. My husband spent several years living in Italy and he is very picky about the Italian food that he eats... Pina's is definitely our favorite in Orange County/LA area.
