About Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - South Street
Pizza is a family affair for me. My Uncle Angelo arrived in America in the 1930s with a passion for pizza. He worked hard and eventually bought his own pizzeria in Brooklyn. It was there that Uncle Angelo invented a recipe for coal oven pizza. That recipe has been perfected over 60 years and passed down through the generations.
My brothers and cousins in New York know the recipe. Diners at Patsy's, Nick's and Angelo's have enjoyed their pizzas, pastas and salads for years. Here in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can feast on my Uncle Angelo's secret recipe dishes at our three Pietro's locations: 1714 Walnut Street, 121 South Street in Philadelphia and 140 W. Route 70 in New Jersey.
I hope that you enjoy our classic style pizzas and pasta specialties "alla familia" for many years to come. Buon appetito

Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - South Street Ratings and Reviews
We were at Pietro's to celebrate a birthday. Angelo was extremely accommodating regarding food selection, and made recommendations that helped us save money. We ordered pizza and arugula salad. Our group loved the pizza, and the salad. The servings were large, and so delicious. Pietro's service was excellent, and made our overall dining experience a pleasure. Everyone is asking about a return visit. Looking forward to another dining experience at Pietro's. Thank you Angelo for your kindness, and food recommendations .
First off, the restaurant canceled my reservation and I didn't receive points. Why? I along with the other (3) had a dreadful dining experience on Mother's Day. It took over 40 minutes for a pizze, few mins. later a pasta dish and a few mins. later Chicken Parm for mt Mom. Hellooooooooo, serve everyone at once especially the mom first. Inexperienced, understaffed lousy excuse for a restaurant
We were a party of 8 with reservations for NYE. It was also my birthday. We've been here the last two years and it's been great however, this last time really upset me. It's like they sat us and completely forgot about us. They were serving every other table and skipping us. They took our orders in a rush and we finally got our food an hour later. Our app (fried mozz) came out AFTER our dinners came out. All the while, no one checked in on us to refill drinks or make sure the food was okay.
Icing on the cake, it was my birthday and we weren't offered dessert just given the check in an effort to get us out of there.
I don't know what the issue was but so disappointing. Might have to look elsewhere next time I'm in the area!
Very good consistent food here. We often come after we've been away for a salad and pizza. Good cocktails and wine. They gave my favorite pizza because it's never too greasy.
Also a good place for larger groups. We came to celebrate daughter's birthday with her friends and everyone loved the food. The waitress also remembered it was her birthday and put a candle in her dessert.
Staff was cold, food was not especially great. We went for a special occasion and made it known to the staff and got a reaction back like "yeah so what". It was a major lost opportunity for them as they could have used it to sell, "well on such a big day id recommend this drink and this meal etc".
Our party of 3 was there for lunch. One said the calamari was excellent. The rigatoni in vodka sauce was very good, not exceptional. The calzone was a little salty-granted there was prosciutto in it, but there was too much salt in the whole thing. The option of family style platters is a wonderful option. The waitress was great, very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was lovely, quiet and pleasant. It's a nice hide away in the city and seemed to accommodate all sized-parties. It was easy to make a reservation on line, which was unnecessary, but nice to have. Overall we give it a 4/5--definitely recommend it and sure to return.
HUGE fan of this place. The servers are kind and accommodating, particularly when we eat here with our pizza loving toddler. It's great to have a neighborhood spot with awesome service and good food that's kid friendly without being a "kids" restaurant. We love Pietro's!
our server did not get our order correct. it took 3 trips and more than one person to bring us what we ordered. i asked for steamed vegetables and they definitely had butter or oil on them- I gave up. the pizza did look good and that is the only reason i would suggest the place to others. i don't eat gluten and they do not make a gluten free crust.
I live in the neighborhood and I've been here a few of times and the food is always great. Haven't been there in a while and this time it was pretty gross. The food was greasy and the bolognese was gross, it looked like my dog's wet dogfood. The meat was not distinguishable, and it was basically a pile of mush. The drinks were not good either. I don't think I'll be back to this restaurant after that experience. They must be under new management or something, because every other time the food was as delicious as it was beautiful. Bummer.
