Pier 290 Ratings and Reviews
We arrived 30 mins early and said we'd be at the bar for pre-dinner cocktails. The hostess confirmed we were 'checked in' but when we went to be seated for dinner, they had given our table away and were told it would be a 45-min wait. No apology, no explanation.
The location is wonderful - right on beautiful Lake Geneva with a beautiful view. The seafood my wife and I ordered was about as awfully prepared as it could be. My son's hamburger was good and my daughter's mac and cheese was what would be expected. Service was good. We may have made a mistake ordering seafood. They have a nice selection of beef - they may be better at that. They clearly need a new chef that can cook seafood. The other disappointment is the absence of the boat in the sand box that use to delight my kids. They have removed it -
not sure why - but it something needs to replace - it is an eyesore presently. It is just a bunch of sand with the remnants of what must have been the concrete foundation for the boat. They have put up a metal ring toss game - but barely uses any of the space. They need to get someone with some imagination to replace the area with something. If the removal was just to discourage parents from bringing kids - expand the bar to replace the "sand box." In summary, my recommendation would be to just go there for drinks and maybe a burger unless you know something I do not know. I would also go if you know that they have hired a new chef. 2000 words is a lot - I am about to give up - I will try to one. I do not think I can. They need to reduce the number if they really want people to do this. Final thoughts - talk a walk on the Lake Geneva path - if you want burger, beer, or even a martini - stop in otherwise keep going.
The reservation process was simple. The table was ready and the server was very attentive. The food came quickly and was great.
We went by boat, the last warm Friday night. Too bad the lights were already off on the piers. We couldn't see the seagull droppings.
I had heard so many good things about dining here . Sadly, that wasn’t my experience . The waitress messed up my order which I know happens . But then she brought back ice cold chicken clearly they pre cook the food because it was cooked all the way through but it was cold . There were four of us and it seems the fish was right in target cooked to perfection but the two of us who ordered non fish dinners had less than quality meals . We did the mousse dessert and that was good .
Lobster Mac & Cheese was pretty good with maybe 2 small chunks of lobster. Thought $28.00 was a bit pricey. But it was large enough to share. Lemontini Martini was not smooth at all.
You are obviously paying for the view & location. As always, hostess was unfriendly like she was doing you a favor by seating you. Server not at all welcoming.
We were visiting Lake Geneva for the day and made reservations at Pier 290 for 2 with a highchair since we have a 1 year old. I was nervous about dining here with a little one, but it was great. We requested a table close to the water and got a great view and table. The server was a little busy, but managed things well. The kids cheeseburger was huge, but delicious. My husband also had a burger and said it was good, but not incredible or outstanding. I have the crab cake and it was tasty, but small in portion. The fries were overdone and too salty. If you come here, get a seat near the water/dock, because it's all about the scenery here!
Cool venue, charming with a fantastic view.
That said, ordered the broiled chicken and received the swordfish. Somehow the chicken came out a minute later and tasted like it too (undercooked chicken, green beans, carrot, chunky mashed potatoes...)
As clean as any restaurant on a pier, but oddly the men’s bathroom had an overflowing garbage situation and it wasn’t exactly dinner rush.
Peculiar. In retrospect would come back for drinks, apps and music instead of seated dinner.
We were excited to go to Pier 290, for our anniversary, we heard a lot of good things about the restaurant. Upon arriving there was a wedding in their hall area, so parking was very difficult. I dropped my family off and looked for a spot. When I made it back to the restaurant I entered the front door and there were a lot of empty tables. No on at the front desk bothered to help me find my family as they were busy with something else. I located them out in a tent area that was pretty cold and loud.
The waitress was good but didn’t look like she wanted to be there (my opinion). My wife couldn’t find anything on the menu to order so she asked if they could do a red sauce with the pasta instead of pesto. It was not good. We returned it. Our other meals were good. The flies were buzzing around us the whole time we were there an one made it into my wife’s water. I am sorry to say we can’t recommend this restaurant it was a huge disappointment.
Set in a beautiful location with friendly, helpful stall, Bar 290 is a nice place for lunch. However, the food was only OK and was not the best value for what we got. Saying that, if I was back in the location, I would certainly give it another try - just for the atmosphere and views alone!
The waterfront area is fantastic. Love the fire pits and the cozy feel. Great for drinks before and after dinner. Food and service inside was really good. Our waiter went far to make our dining experience a great one. Definitely would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Geneva Lake area.
Decades ago, this building was the nerve center for Gage Marine. Now Pier 290 has indoor and outdoor dining. The outdoor dining is under large tents. We dined inside where the vibe was relaxed. The food was pretty darn expensive for what we got. I sprung for the 8 oz filet with mashed potatoes and a few string beans for $43. It would have been better at $25. I don't think I'll go back again as there are plenty of other options in the area.
No better view of Lake Geneva with a casual menu and comfortable atmosphere. We had a gorgeous day with clear skies and warm temperatures for September. We especially enjoyed sharing the Ceviche and homemade fries. I loved the Lobster Roll and my sister enjoyed her Reuben. My cousin was disappointed that the Bratwurst sandwich had nor relish or other condiments accompanying his entree.
The food is good. Be careful if you have an allergy because the staff is not very knowledgeable on what items have what ingredients. (For ex: asked about flour in the spinach/artichoke dip, server said there was none. Item arrived with panko crumbs on top). The drinks are not bad.
The view is awesome! The restaurant is very nice on the inside and outside. We had the half lobster and wasn't too impressed especially for paying $38. Lovely presentation but that was about it. Oysters we yummy but that doesn't require much skill to prepare. Overall a bit pricey and bland but to be fair we had the exact same dishes so I don't know about the other entrees. Might come back for cocktails and appetizers but will never order the over cooked under flavored lobster again.
Birthday and date, service was awesome, food very good. I also had a good laugh, reading a particular "Yelp" review while enjoying my meal. Reviewer stated that while the view of Lake Michigan was great she was upset that her glass of wine was not filled to the brim! Lake Michigan huh!! Dinner and a laugh👍👍
We have been to Pier 290 many times but rarely for lunch. We had lunch during the week and found the lack of crowds refreshing. The sandwiches were good as was the soup and the dip and chips. In our minds, Pier 290 is better for lunch. We have found inconsistent quality of food and service at dinner that we didn't find at lunch.
