Talk about going out with the bang! We enjoyed the 5 course meal with wine pairings and every course was a sensation; so good I could have licked the dish. It's just a shame that this is Piccolo's final week week open. We can only hope the new restaurant will leave the same impression on us!
What a memorable treat. Our children sent a tasting menu certificate for my 75th birthday. With my wife and me each selecting a different choice for the five courses, we shared and enjoyed ten of the fifteen offerings. The kitchen staff created the edible art and the wait staff gracefully served and described our plates. Although as infrequent visitors to small plate restaurants, after reviewing the excellent tasting menu descriptions on the Piccolo website we had a very good idea of the food combinations we would experience - without knowing how they would look and taste. Most amazing, the textures and flavors and colors on the individual plates complemented each other without excessive spicing or difficult to handle pieces. (We sometimes have a challenge appreciating food that is overly flavored to make a signature statement.)
As senior citizens we rarely eat after seven, yet a well-paced five-course meal after nine was comfortable and relaxing. We even got to park right in front of the restaurant, something that so rarely happens. We left with an appreciation of new tastes and a birthday card signed by the staff.
All around very enjoyable and certainly memorable. Thanks to all.
It is unfortunate to see such a wonderful venue for a remarkable and memorable food experience closing on 3/11. We ate here only once, but it will be fondly remembered for a long, long time. We hope everyone adversely affected by the closing finds a suitable substitute for work and dining experiences. I think it may be hard to find.
We'd been wanting to try this restaurant for years and just never got around to it - finally decided to jump on it when we saw the restaurant was closing permanently soon.
Pros: The ambiance of the place was very nice. And I was very impressed with the menu and the flavors that the chefs had put together. When I saw the menu, I was very excited. And the flavors didn't disappoint. The butter that comes with the bread - oh my goodness - heavenly. My cauliflower soup with crab was very nice, and the veal tenderloin with tuna conserva and egg ravioli, swiss chard, and reggiano - also very delicious.
Cons: I'm sorry to say that we were disappointed. And perhaps it's partially our fault - we were expecting the food to be "small bites" but not "two bites". $15 for a 2 bites of veal and $17 for the skirt steak was disappointing.
The service itself was initially nice, very pleasant - but it takes a very long time to dine there. We were there for 2 hours and didn't even eat something from all 5 categories of that evening's tasting menu. We'd ordered one soup and we 2 entrees. We'd have been there all night if we had eaten from the other 3 categories. The waitress tried to talk us into more, but when we saw the portion sizes of the meal, we said no. We also opted out of the $11 desserts which we knew would be about one bite (and went to get frozen yogurt instead!).
Her demeanor changed when she realized we were done - her attention and pleasant nature immediately went to other tables and we felt like we were rushed out, as though our patronage was less than the nearby tables who were ordering more.
Also, when we left, I wasn't even able to get out of my seat without having my torso brush against the plates of the table next to us - and I'm not a large person. Thankfully, they were gracious and understanding but I was embarrassed.
If this place were staying open, I wouldn't go back. I'm happy we did get to try it once, but one and done is just fine with us.
We wanted to try this restaurant out before it closed. We had heard good things about the food and the quiet atmosphere. It was wonderful to have to get to only choose one item out of three choices for each category. It made it so much easier for my wife. It was also wonderful to have the wine pairings.
We had not gotten around to visiting and wanted to try Piccolo before it closed - it was worth the trip. The wine pairing was nice and they pair the wine with the specific item not the course. The food was very good - the chowder, beef tartar, crab ravioli and duck were particularly good. The service is casual but very good and professional. Although it is fairly expensive and Tim McKee portions it really is not fine dining - better for foodies.
First time to go to Picollo. Creative and unique dishes and presentation. But I must agree with the other reviewers that commented on the portion sizes. Small plates/tasting menu is one thing but OMG. This broke the record for petite, especially given the price paid for each dish. Everything was tasty with the exception of the first course salmon mousse which my husband said had a strong flavor. I realize they are closing soon, but if not this is a place I would consider one and done, interesting to try but not a place I would choose to return to.
Fish was overcooked and tasted incredibly fishy. Complained and was told hamachi is an aggressive fish. Several dishes were under salted. a few dishes were actually quite good, but didn't seem to be inspired and could be mailing it in because they are closing in March.
We have been fortunate to frequent this restaurant a few times a year throughout it's existence - from routine visits as well as wine tasting functions. We truly will miss this gem of a restaurant. Thanks to Doug and his excellent staff for creating a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment.
I think maybe the hype I heard beforehand set me up for disappointment. But it was really, really slow service - took over 2 hours from start to finish. 20 minutes for anyone to even take our wine order. Food was good, but 2 bites (even for a tasting menu) is pretty tiny. For 2 of us to do the 5 course tasting menu with a bottle of wine was over $200. Plus tip. And you are literally on top of each other at the tables. The waiter clearing the table next to us actually brushed her butt up against our bottle of wine. Yum.
Not worth it and if it was staying open - I would not go back.
A great meal that allows you to try so many flavor profiles in one sitting! Small plate venue, so make sure you know what you are signing up for. Don't screw around...Just go with the sampler and the wine pairing. Food and wine is spot on so you can't go wrong. Staff is great! Very knowledgeable and excellent time management. You will never be in need, but not be interrupted either. It ain't cheap ,but menu is farm to table spectacular, and it did not disappoint. Menu changes, but squab was really outstanding. Beef tartare was deliciously rich and flavorful. Panna Cotta was fabulous. Make sure to get there before they close the doors.
Amazing service, delicious food, perfect for a special date night. Love upscale food in relaxed atmosphere. Cheese plate was worth it and the squab/parsnip/black truffle hollandaise/huckleberry jam combo might be the most exquisite bite of food I have ever consumed! Bummer this place is closing, but so excited to visit Tenant when they open up later this year!
Once again, our dinner proved why Piccolo is our favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. Went to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and ate the entire menu...and then some. The service is (ALWAYS) awesome and the food is interesting and delicious. Please don't close!
This makes me so sad because Piccolo is closing. The food here is just amazing. We again opted for the 5 course tasting menu and the wine pairing. Salmon mousse, scrambled eggs/pigs feet, salsify, skirt steak and maple mousse dessert. Loved them all. You must go before this gem closes.
I'm so glad I gave this as a Christmas present to my daughter, who is a food geek! The experience was so enjoyable and smooth. The food was delicious, different and distinctly haught cuisine. We did the tasting menu, which encourages the shy to try more than a couple of things.
We tried this place as a birthday surprise for my girlfriend who always wanted to go. She is an enthusiast for small plate dining, several courses, long meals, etc. This seemed like it would be a good experience. Unfortunately, everyone in our party was disappointed. Here is why:
The service was very slow between courses. I think this was an attempt to get us to order more wine, as the waitress was aggressive in refilling our glasses and suggesting this. I understand restaurants make tremendous profit on the wine, but she was unfriendly to us after she realized we were very moderate drinkers.
The food portions, relative to the pricing, are very, very small. We're talking literally about three bites for items that cost as much as $17. I think pricewise, the "small" (miniscule?) plates should have been tripled in size, or the price reduced considerably. After, when I told one of my friends who has been to Piccolo our experience, he chuckled, commenting, "I hope you ate beforehand!"
I have dined in tapas/small plate restaurants all over the US, Mexico, southern Europe and the Middle East. I honestly have never experienced such tiny portions, especially relative to the price. I do think one of the main reasons people eat out is to be nutritionally fulfilled, and satisfied when the meal is finished. Everyone in our party left hungry.
The taste of the food is not extraordinary, yet the choices seem deliberately calculated to intimidate the guests: there are no simple selections, such as beef or chicken. We had to resort to googling before we were comfortable ordering. Even so, the resulting combinations are unimpressive. For example, I had duck with some type of horseradish sauce. The latter overwhelmed the taste of the game, perhaps because the meat was not very fresh. Others in our party tried the lamb: it was overdone, tough, and hard to eat.
Piccolo has announced they are closing soon. I think this is likely due to a lack of repeat customers.
Fabulous New Years Eve dinner -- 7 courses with a couple of additional surprises thrown in, and wine pairings that were wonderful. The Dungeness crab ravioli, aged squab and venison loin with celery root tart were particular standouts for me. And, as usual but in particular on this special night, the service was outstanding. Gonna miss this place real bad.
What a phenomenal experience - the food was exceptional, the service immaculate. My husband and I just happened to come here during a 24 hour layover in Minneapolis. We stumbled upon what has to be the best restaurant in Minneapolis! Such a pity they're closing in March, but we'll watch what the chef does next, for sure. If only he would come to LA!
