We were there celebrating a special occasion. The staff was outstanding, very attentive but not overbearing. The food was very very good... I recommend the lambchops, A+.. The prices we as expected.. I'm absolutely going back.. YUMMY!!! 😁
Piccolo Mondo was a nice local restaurant, but honestly the food was just ok for me (lack luster). Bread was cold, wine was warm, and pasta could have used some seasoning. The staff were great though! Just not my favorite.
Food was pretty good but quite overpriced. For this kind of restaurant, I would have expected warm bread.
My first time there and I brought family visiting from out of town. We all agreed it was excellent - the food, the service, the ambiance. It's also easy to get to from 15 bus in HP. One of my new favorites.
It’s in a very accessible location right across the park median from the Museum or Science and Industry and close to Lakeshore Drive. It’s a Hyde Park local gem in a historic building that has been around for a long time. It’s a great place to have a quiet dinner in a beautiful space. Excellent food and attentive service without being obtrusive. Highly recommend . I had not been to for awhile since I moved from Hyde Park but so glad that I went back and will return soon.
Amazing experience and food was a plus! We absolutely loved the service and the cleanest of the restaurant. Plus, the music was so soft perfect for conversations with friends.
Food was terrible. Mushy Linguini with clams out of a can. Reheated previously frozen, probably for a long time, Eggplant Parmesan was gun metal gray in color and flavorless. Ugg!
Just looking for good food
This is a comfortable neighborhood restaurant with a fairly standard Italian menu. Food is well prepared and portions are generous. Their minestrone soup is the best in town!
Waiter was annoyed when we didn’t order right away. Stormed off. Did that twice. On Valentine’s Day.
Great Valentines Day lunch. Exceptional service. A favorite!
Piccolo mondo was cozy, comfortable, friendly. The Italian fare is average to below average at best. My pasta was waterlogged and had some pieces of rigatoni mixed in with spaghetti. The flavors were washed out as well. There are not many places to eat in Hyde park pre theater. I would try again but price point was high for mediocre food. I will say the salad was delicious.
Wonderful! We shared several small appetizers, a salad & entrees. Every dish was properly cooked & perfectly seasoned. Hope to return soon!
This was not good. Went here years ago as a student, this was disappointing. Antipasti was terrible, the meat was past its prime. The seafood was blah, the chicken pesto was OK, but in general it was all just Blah! Made me sad, this was a restaurant you made your parents take you to because dorm food is not good, and this was also not good.
We had a wonderful visiting with friends from the University of Chicago. The location was ideal for our purposes. Everyone enjoyed their entree. Service was very good. Food was very good not exceptional.
Good food, good value, and great desserts. A neighborhood institution for good reason.
This is a warm and friendly restaurant. It is always a pleasure to come here. The staff remembers you and greets you by name after you've been there a few times. The food is plentiful and good.
Nice location with plenty of street parking.
Nice classic restaurant
Just ok food. Nothing special about this restaurant.
Pleasant atmosphere, service was great, food was very tasty and fresh.
Our kids were in town for the holidays so we planned a family day. Parked in front of the restaurant in the afternoon and walked over to the museum. We spent 5 hours there and had reservation for 6pm. Tapas plates for starters that were tasty. We had house Salads, the dressing was fabulous. We had a couple bottles of nice red wine for the table, very reasonably priced. Everyone enjoyed their entrees and even wanted to share some wonderful desserts from the bakery. The service is exceptional, most of the people waiting on the tables have been there for twenty or thirty years. You can tell they’re invested.
We’ll be back for sure.
Bread was delicious although it would have been better warm. Service was good. Portions were quite small for the price.
Wonderful food, as always, and super service. A bit noisy, due to two birthday parties.
The whitefish tasted fishy and the lemon sauce was too thick for my taste.
We had a lovely evening of Italian food in a nice setting. The bread served was fresh and crusty with a fragrant olive oil and fresh-grated parm. My dinner was a chicken breast with smoked provolone, mushrooms and asparagus in a white wine sauce, complimented by a bottle of Ruffino Aziano Chianti Classico. The Piccolo Mondo salad was quite nice, but perhaps too much dressing.
I've been here before and I am certainly looking forward to returning.
Oh yes, Our server, Juan, was informative and attentive.
Piccolo Mondo is a very nice neighborhood spot with very good food and a quiet and congenial dining room. It is a nice dinner spot and a great business lunch spot. The waiters are attentive and professional.
Always love our dinners at Piccolo Mondo. The servers are very friendly and always to everything they can to accommodate us. Our food is always excellent and is reasonably priced. Can't wait for our next visit.
We were celebrating the granting of tenure to one of our group. We had a perfect table on an off night (Monday) and could make lots of noise without disturbing the restaurant. The food was lovely; the service was patient and understanding. This is a great neighborhood spot that has survived because the food is consistently good; the service is friendly; the setting is lovely. And, even though people don't realize it, there is, mercifully, a free parking lot at the Bret Harte School after 4pm. It can be accessed from Cornell Avenue (west side of street) immediately north of the new construction near the south corner.
This is a great neighborhood Italian restaurant (& bakery) in Hyde Park, across from the Museum of Science & Industry. Our waiter was reserved, but very competent. We even coaxed a smile out of him by the end of the evening! The food was delicious - big on flavor! We will definitely visit Piccolo Mondo again!
My wife and I had a pre-theatre dinner at Piccolo Mondo last weekend. This was a first time visit to the restaurant, and I confess I was a bit skeptical because Hyde Park is not known in Chicago as a first-choice destination for Italian food. I'm really glad we went! The food was excellent and fairly priced. Service was courteous and competent. I had a very tasty main course: shrimp, artichokes and capers with fettucine in a wine sauce. Wow, was it ever good! The flavors were vibrant and all ingredients were fresh. The insalata mista that I ordered ahead of the portata principale was equally fresh, and very nicely sprinkled with pecans, raisins and pine nuts. My wife ordered minestrone, followed by rigatoni with fresh mozzarella and sliced black olives in a pomodori sauce. Both were hits. The atmosphere is refreshingly relaxed, with moderate background sounds emanating from the house sound system and diner chit-chat. The only drawback is parking which is typically scarce in Hyde Park no matter what. We will return to Piccolo Mondo; in fact we are looking forward to a return visit!
I took my daughter and a friend and found it tasty with good service.
Great little place, glad we saw it when we Googled places near the Museum of Science and Industry. Absolutely would recommend this place and go back again.
Excellent choice! We had a large group (which expanded last minute), and the restaurant graciously accommodated us on a busy night. The service was great and the food even better! We will go back.
Food was not very good. Parking on the street was virtually impossible. Their parking lot was 1 1/2 blocks and down a dark alley. Not a good experience and we will not return.
My group wanted to sit at a table where air wasn't blowing from the vents and the server appeared to have an issue about whether the table sat 4 or 6.
My food was NOT served hot. It was so cool that the server had to warm it up. I had the tiniest pieces of chicken ever. I did not expect plump or huge but, not tiny. This was my first time eating at this restaurant and I expected and anticipated better tasting food.
It's time for renovations. Tomatos and bread should not be cold. Restrooms should be upgraded.
Chose this place due to proximity to the Museum of Science and Industry and it was perfect! Delicious food, good wine, and nice ambience were all factors in why this place got such a good review from me. I wish I lived in Chicago because this would be a place to visit frequently.
I take a group of colleagues to Piccolo Mondo each fall at the time of an academic business meeting in Hyde Park. The food is always good and everyone has a good time. It is a reliable, friendly place with a good, extensive menu.
I was looking for an upscale restaurant with decent food. Although we did not receive a particularly warm welcome the restaurant was good. We arrived earlier than our reservation and since the restaurant was pretty much empty we were seated. The waiters were attentive however he did not pull out my chair. The restaurant was well appointed but seemed rather cool. The food was good and the Tapas I had was plentiful. I might return soon but parking is hard to find.
