Juansetter (Escaping in the City: A Taste of Real Italy) said: “Every other item has truffles/truffle oil in it, and every third has prosciutto or Parmigiano Reggiano. And none of it is the heavy saucy, fried stuff that you find in most New York Italian restaurants; rather, this green café goes for the fresh, healthy, Mediterranean feel that we love about Italy."
"That's probably because the owners - and, indeed, the guy behind the counter - are actually from Italy. Ciao!”

Piccolo Cafe is the tiniest restaurant I've ever visited - maybe 20 seats, but the space is used well. The food was outstanding, the drinks were delicious and the location is perfect if you're going to a show at the Beacon. Reservations are a must on a show night. Bathroom is in the basement, down a narrow set of stairs.
Great location to the Beacon Theatre. Service was excellent. Food is ok. The small cafe is cozy and inviting. I recommend it!
Very small, very cozy, very authentic and friendly:)
There are lots of seafood items on the menu, which is great. However, they put bacon on the calamari appetizer and it wasn't listed that way on the menu. We don't eat pork. The place is charming and VERY small, hence the name. The service was some of the worst I've had at an upper west side restaurant like this (menu price, Italian, etc.) The only thing worse than bad service, is when no one on the staff or management cares that they're giving bad service.
Small place, they sit you next to where they collect the dirty dishes and you can barely fit at the table. We were two people and they couldn’t fit both our plates on the table because it was so small.
Small, quaint restaurant with delicious food. It has an off-beat ambiance, service was good. If you are looking for a large scale Italian restaurant this is not for you. If you are looking for cozy and warm atmosphere you have come to the right place. What is does not have in space it makes up with the quality of their food. I would definitely return to try some of their other dishes!!
Our experience at this restaurant could not have been better! The eggplant was flavorful and texture was perfect. The pasta was cooked just right. Sauce and meatballs were wonderful! The service was attentive, generous and intuitive. What a great place and the prices were more than reasonable. We will make this one of our go to places and spread the word to friends that love good food!
Very good service, nice staff, and good food at reasonable prices for dinner. Would go again for a low key dinner when visiting the city!
We were pressured to order a number of times, despite the fact that the restaurant was empty and we had a reservation. When we were finally served, the appetizer plates were never cleared until the main course came. The zucchini parm was all sauce - we couldn't find any zucchini. Main course was nothing special - not particularly good. And dishes were not cleared after that either. Service needs a lot of work - they seemd to have an attitude problem. They didn't seeem to know what they were doing - wine was poured without tasting and was overpriced for a very very ordinary bottle. We would have rejected if we had tasted it. All and all, not satisfactory at all.
nice restaurant, good food, attentive wait staff. very small space, with small table and small chairs. excellent salads, superb pasta. as past reviews of stated cozy and romantic. great restaurant when going to the beacon for a show. fyi bathroom is down stairs not handicap accessible. will definitely return.
The restaurant with no shrimp, no dessert and no coffee! Shrimp could only be added to the penne a la vodka pasta dish but no others. When we asked for the dessert menu they said they had no desserts and when we asked for coffee they said they only had espresso. Pasta dishes were nothing special and the chicken rollatini was tasteless and badly presented. Would not recommend this place at all.
The service was fantastic! Alejandro is a wonderful host. I cannot wait to return.
Piccolo is as small as its name implies, but the food and service are first rate.
Wonderful ambiance... I loved how small it was... the food was amazing. I had the Shrimp with Asparagus and tomatoes, my husband had the lasagna, and my son had the fettuccini with Bolognese and loved it. The waiter was attentive but not hovering. The prices were reasonable. Totally a lovely experience. I look forward to going back in the warm weather and eating outside.
Food and value were excellent, but service was disappointing. Entrees took way too long to arrive. Tables that arrived after us received theirs before ours. No apologies or explanations. Would not return.
This place was certainly “ piccolo”, but the food was wonderful . Everything we had was delicious . Only negative was no coffee: machine was broken !😢. Otherwise it was a wonderful dining experience !!!
The food was very good. However the table was the smallest table i have ever eaten at. Could not fit two plates across from each other on the table and our knees were hitting each other the whole time. Seats were the most uncomfortable seats i have ever sat in at a restaurant. Service was mediocre at best.
Tiny little place but the food was excellent! We went before a concert at the Beacon and so was just about everyone else in the restaurant! Service was excellent! we were in and out in plenty of time to make the concert! I would definitely recommend, especially if you're going to the Beacon, so close!!
Had to wait a little for a table but it was well worth the wait. We had two different Ravioli dishes - pumpkin with bolognese sauce and meat with a mushroom sauce. Delicious!
Food was amazing, service was outstanding. A little too small but the food was delicious. I will definitely, go back.
We ordered vodka gimlets and bartender had no idea how to make them- tasted like soda- ordered the fish special filleted and had at least a dozen bones in it- one bathroom in basement and door doesn’t lock so you might walk in on someone (I did)- tiny restaurant but that’s ok, probably part of the charm- service was good and waiter did the right thing reducing the bill and not charging for some items- too bad
Great food great price
Service was inattentive.Bolognese was edible but bland. The octopus was half cold, half warm. Lasagna ok. Calamari appetizer was the best thing our party ordered, but it was a tiny portion, not suitable for sharing as we’d been told. Piccolo salad had limp greens and overly sweet dressing, and at $17 was hugely overpriced. Restaurant didn’t honor the Open Table discount I had selected, which was a free glass of wine with a salad order. They insisted I could get $5 off a glass of wine, and that was it, and so we ordered two glasses of wine and they gave a single $5 discount. A big disappointment all around.
Dear Nelson Lauren, we appreciate your kind feedback ! A manger or ownership are always available during the restaurant opening time, we would love to be told right away and have the chance to make it right immediately than receiving a 1 star review two days after especially stating:" we gave $5Off instead " because if you kindly check your reservation, we check all reservations note and clearly states : $5 Off . Maybe was confusing? We were there for you and the other 3 guests all the time.
Located across the street from the Beacon Theatre. Booked an early dinner reservation pre-show and were seated immediately.
So happy we made reservations as the restaurant is tiny with fewer than 10 tables and seating at the small bar.
Friendly staff and traditional Italian cuisine. Food was well prepared and wine list was limited but of good quality.
We enjoyed our meals of Delicious pasta and sauces. Spiced perfectly. One dish included eggplant and ricotta. Yum. The other had an Italian meat in a red sauce. Delicious. Cozy little place. Make a reservation or you may not get a spot at this cozy little gem. I will return!
Chef Gianluca will go extra miles for all your favorite pasta and more!!!
My wife and I loved it. Went to see Jerry Seinfeld for Jennie's 50th. We don't do the city very often (2 hour drive) but we loved the super-cozy setting and excellent food. The cocktails were good but not great -- but our appetizers and entrees were very good. Super close to the Beacon theatre -- we would absolutely go again next time we head in to NYC. Definitely make a reservation. : )
I love this place. Our waiter on Saturday however, rushed us out of there :( Took my friends food that she would've liked to have taken home and stopped giving us water in an attempt to rush us out. There were plenty of free seats and no need for this. I will go back and hope to have a different waiter.
It’s a neighborhood gem! It’s tiny and still looks like it did in the early 1900’s when it opened. Food was amazing, fresh pasta and great sauces. We will go back
I’ll be back very soon...❤️
My absolutely favorite Italian restaurant all around. I'm working my way through the entire menu and enjoying every visit to the hilt. Tiny place, so authentic, the food is out of this world delicious. Yum! The wait staff (2 young guys) are so adorable and professional, and the ambiance all over is, no-rush-stay-as-long-as-you-like. Open for dinner-only now during winter months, I've enjoyed many a lunch and late-afternoon cappuccino there during warm weather. And they provide authentic Italian books and magazines for reading during your visit. You must go!
Amazing Italian food....the truffle risotto with poached egg was delicious!
Authentic, real, passionate Italian cuisine with a talented and genuine chef named Gianluca!
This time I was a bit disappointed at Piccolo Cafe. The ambience is great, very cozy and perfect for having pleasant conversations but... The service was poor and the food below average compared to other Italian restaurants I have been to (at least this time). The waiter had very little knowledge about the dishes on the menu (he didn't know how Cod Fish al guazzetto looked, couldn't recommend anything specific as an appetizer and didn't know if the chef was from southern or northern Italy) and the gluten-free pasta with artichoke sauce, truffle and burrata I ordered arrived almost cold, under-cooked, and was nothing special. Also, $15 for three tiny little squids as an appetizer sounds a little bit too much...
This small restaurant serves great food in an atmosphere of comfort and intimancy- one feels welcomed and the wait/staff is excellent. I come to NY once s year- this is always my first stop
Neighborhood Italian food served in small storefront space. Service friendly and prompt. Menu provides large selection of appetizers and pastas to choose from. Food is good and freshly cooked to order.
My Birthday dinner was just perfect!
This is our favorite restaurant in all of NY. The food is consistently outstanding, the servers are wonderfully friendly and fast, and the ambiance is chic and understated. We’ve celebrated many special occasions here, and also casually dined here. I highly recommend the gnocchi Gorgonzola!!!
Got there and was told that Open Table overbooked. 3 couples were turned away when we were there.
