About Piccolino Ristorante
Salvatore Faso opened the original Piccolino in 2007. A Sicilian by way of Chicago, Faso comes from a family of Italian chefs and restaurateurs. He owns Delizie also in Mission Viejo. He made a name for himself at Prego before setting off on his own with Piccolino.
In August of 2015he moved to a free-standing building with exponentially nicer decor – it’s now the poshest Italian restaurant in south Orange County. The centerpiece is a beautiful wine vault that surrounds the front entrance. And there’s plenty to show off. Faso has assembled a concise but impressive collection of Italian wines.
Make sure to ask about the veal porterhouse. Chances are nobody’s going to tell you about it unless you bring it up. It’s not on the menu. It’s a secret special that’s always in short supply but usually available for a few orders each night. It is absolutely superb: cut gloriously thick, heavily charred around the edges and rosy pink throughout.

Piccolino Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
Here from out of town and the hotel highly recommended this place. Very unsuspecting location but quite a lovely surprise walking through the door. Beautiful decor and the service was very attentive, but not overwhelming. The menu has a huge variety but don’t surpass the specials, best veal chop I’ve had before!! Will definitely be back
Our first time here. Ambiance was good (lights lowered), waitstaff and hostess were very professional, food presentation was very nice. Lasagna was authentic and delicious, bone in filet mignon special was just OK. Desserts were mixed. Cannoli was not authentic (sorry, we are originally from the NY area, but dried fruit on a cannoli?), ganache was described as white and dark chocolate but was mostly white chocolate with a drizzle of dark chocolate. We don't love white chocolate, but it was very good. Only real disappointment was the acoustics. Loud enough that at times, it was tough to hear each other across the table. All in all, we did enjoy our dinner there and will come back to try some other dishes. It is one of the few fine dining restaurants in Mission Viejo, so that is a plus!
First time at this restaurant and would definitely go back. Food was excellent as well as the service. We had a group of 15. They actually put us in a separate room. Very accommodating. We had to push back our reservation time by 30 minutes on the day of. No problem. Also willing to do separate checks for such a large group. Highly recommend it.
We love this restaurant, the food is outstanding but the noise level was way too much. The restaurant has not been fitted for acoustics to bring the noise level down. It is like Javier's in the Spectrum you can not have a decent conversation indoors without having to scream. If you are looking for a quiet pleasurable time go there for lunch not dinner.
Definitely one of my favorite places to eat. The food is always amazing! The calamari is absolutely delicious! The salmon is always cooked to perfection. Their specials are incredible. Love the Spicy Diablo sauce. They also serve THE best dirty martinis in the area!
We made a lunch reservation on a Sunday as we were visiting my mother in law in Rancho Santa Margarita. The restaurant is located in a rather non descript shopping center, which was completely closed due to Sunday. We were nervous, no one was dining or waiting at Piccolini. The server welcomed us warmly. My big test of a good restaurant is by trying the Gnocchi, so many times they are simply leaden potato turds. These were pillowy and scrumptious!
I recommend this place-we will go back and try the dinner experience!
We have enjoyed dining at Piccolinos on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The food is always good, very consistent, the hostess and wait staff are all friendly and accommodating. We will return and will bring out of town family during the holidays. Don’t change anything.
Was a pretty good experience. Great waiter. Food was good - great ! The only problem we had was that we were 'hustled' into the dinning room without seeing the bar dinning and outside dinning. The view and value would have been better - if we were able to see that area.
We normally enjoy eating at Piccolino at dinner time. This time we joined friends in the bar for
Happy Hour. The only concern was the noise level....but it was okay....people enjoying themselves. We all had half price wines....nice selection. We also shared a pizza & a calzone....delicious!! Our waitress was awesome, checking in but not being pushy.
All in all, a way to have delicious food & drink for less money! We will do this again!!
First time at Piccolino. Wasn't expecting much due to it's location in a ghost town of a shopping center, but was pleasantly surprised upon entering the restaurant.
Staff was extremely attentive, seated us almost immediately. Great atmosphere. Server was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient, despite having a full station. Food was great, portions more than ample.
Not your "family" Italian Restaurant. A couple of glasses of wine, an appetizer and two entrees were over $120 (and no, it wasn't obscenely expensive wine). The fish special was a Dover Sole for $40. Forty dollars? Come on now. We stuck with a pasta dish and a veal dish.
All in all, enough positives to want to go back again.
The restaurant is located in an up-and-coming plaza. Parking was easy to access and was located right outside the restaurant. The service was excellent and there were many special entrees that were not included on the menu. Dim lighting, perfect for family outings, date night, or just a nice dinner. Wait staff was very knowledgeable of their menu. Water was always refilled, free mints on the way out.
Came in right as it was opening and was warmly greeted by the owner, which was a special touch off the bat because that doesn't happen very often anymore. After he greeted us and sat us at our table our server came and informed us of specials which were more of dinner specials but a bone-in filet for lunch? Count me in! It was so tender it cut off the bone so easily and was slathered in the greatest balsamic reduction with shallots, just the perfect extra touch. Everyone else really enjoyed their meals as well; the flavors just so succulent. Really the best meal I've had in a while I'll definitely be better for a date night
Not as good as we first thought. After being seated, we got a chance o peruse an extensive menu. It was quite impressive. There was also a pretty good wine list, but we brought our own bottle and were informed the corkage was $0.25 for the first bottle, and $25.00 for the second. The waiter described the specials and our party of 5 reviewed our options. One lady in our party had salmon and she enjoyed it. I had veal saltimbocca and my wife ordered a salmon special. The menu and the waiter described the vegetables including broccolini. Broccoli was delivered, instead. One of our party ordered a side of spinach which was never delivered. My saltimbocca was made with a veal chop, not cutlets pounded thin. It just didn't taste right. My wife's special had two small pieces of salmon and two medium shrimp on pasta. NOT worth $33.00.
All members of our family of 6 enjoyed our dishes. I particularly loved the barramundi which was grilled to perfection! Husband enjoyed the veal tenderloin medallions in Marsala reduction, and porcini mushroom. Both went deliciously well with Feudo Maccari Saia red.
Enjoyed all three dessert of their royal imperial berries in vodka and lemon sorbet, tiramisu and creme brulee!
Note: Reservations made via OpenTable but restaurant did not pickup the note that we were celebrating a birthday. So, customers who want their complimentary birthday dessert will need to inform their server about the occasion.
Follow-up to my review: Sal, chef and owner immediately replied to my reviews, apologized and made sure I gave him the name of our server to ensure that this slip-up would not happen again. He also want us to look him up when we come to visit again, which we surely will!
