Petterino's Ratings and Reviews
We enjoy Petterinos every visit. The food is prepared and presented well. The fixed price menu is a nice feature especially for those having a meal prior to the theater. The staff always asks about your "plans" (i.e. theater, train to catch etc.) and reacts accordingly. Like almost every other restaurant these days the price of wine by the glass is outrageous. None-the-less an above average spot for a meal.
We met our niece for a quick birthday dinner while we were in town for a play. She was late but our server was so accommodating and even made sure there was a piece of cake with a candle for her, which we did not request. How nice! The place was packed with the theatre crowd but the staff just whizzed through it all. Food was delicious though on the high side cost wise. Nice drink selections too.
When in Chicago attending a play we always enjoy dinner here pre show. Prompt service and excellent food always. The wait staff always friendly, courteous, and professional and make sure dinner is a delightful experience with plenty of time to get to the theater. Always an outstanding dining event.
We ate here before heading to the theater. We were seated immediately, and our waiter was very cognizant of timing for us to leave for the show. We truly enjoyed our food, the trout and almond-crusted whitefish. We had the prix fixe dinners, a great value. We were seated in a booth which allowed us to talk easily; it wasn't too noisy. I came here once before and ate at the bar and had a good experience then, too.
Great place to go before the theatre. Yes you need reservations as it gets vey crowded. The bar is very nice but also very crowded. Food is good and not over priced.
Our waiter was vey attentive even though he was quite busy. He made suggestions and made us feel that he was glad we were there.
A pre show dinner with my daughter: the staff was very friendly and helpful. My daughter ordered the 5 cheese ravioli and the waitress offered a half order. I was not aware this was a option and it was the perfect portion. I got the filet and they both were fantastic. Also you have to get the peppermint ice cream.
Always a favorite with the pre-theater crowd, the service is geared to getting you to your performance on time. We were four, we all ordered something different, and we were all pleased. Cocktails are excellent and they have an excellent wine list. It's a big plus that you can leave your car with the valet until after dinner and theater.
It was incredible, the atmosphere just walking in was welcoming and friendly. The pictures on the walls were entertaining and it was neat to try and recognize the stars. The waiter was attentive and friendly offering lots of suggestions. My wife is celiac and they were more than accommodating, she said it was the best gluten free pasta she had ever had. If we lived in Chicago we would have been taking the leftovers home. Amazing meal, when we come back to Chicago we will return.
Our server was not friendly in the least! He never smiled, never made eye contact and really took away from the experience. Our bread basket contained one section of bread for four people. We watched as a table of two received a very generous portion of the same bread; probably twice as much as we received. Also, our ravioli was only "warm" and our green beans extremely undercooked. We sent the green beans back and they were replaced with extremely hot ones, which we did not eat because they too were undercooked. We asked for separate bills and the server made the decision to put the undercooked green beans on the wrong bill - he did not ask!
The food was good, just the entire experience left us disappointed.
Specifically requested a booth or table away from waiter stations and doorways to stay clear of high traffic, since we had family visiting from out of town. Repeated this when checking in. Given a booth, but in the main thoroughfare. Every person eating in restaurant must pass by this booth. Every waiter must pass by to get to bar. There were other tables in back because I checked. Otherwise, waitress was excellent. Food was average at best. Nothing special.
We normally go to Petterino's prior to plays. For lunch prior to the Sat. Matinees it is a great place to eat and enjoy ourselves. The only thing is that they did take one of our favorite menu items off (Steak Diane) from the Fixed Prix menu, it was our favorite. Fortunately there are plenty of other great items from which to chose, but it was our favorite. They always take great care of us and hold our 'doggie bags' in the refrigerator until after the play. Great location and wonderful food and service.
Nostalgic for the bread basket. The food was well prepared, the service solid. Truly miss the sweet potato option - best dessert on the menu. Mourning the bread basket - now consisted of pieces of an italian loaf. The former quite memorable basket with flat bread, brown bread, and various other assorted options is quite missed. A small thing, but have to believe it was a trademark of Petterino.
This was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in years. The waiter never introduced himself, did not promote any of the specials, barely engaged at all. My husband's meat had to be sent back because it was under-cooked and it came back still under cooked. No apology was made by any one. The bus boy couldn't clear the table fast enough - made us feel like we were in the way. We won't be returning !
Petterino's is a staple among Loop restaurants for good reason. The food is wonderful with enough variety and price points to satisfy most people. And, service is great. We also like that the atmosphere is elegant without being overly fussy. These are all reasons the place has always been full when we've been there, including this weekend. We ordered two chicken dishes, a pasta, and fish--all were very good. The only problem we had was an exuberant group near us making conversation difficult. Once they left, we could hear each other at our table. That said, don't miss this restaurant.
3 of us went for Sunday lunch/brunch before the theater. It was very conveniently located for the Cadillac Theater. The ambiance was classy old school steak and Italian restaurant. Service was impeccable. They brought a basket of scones. I had a great Bloody Mary. Hubby got chicken parmesan with a small topping of pasta that was yummy. Son got filet with biscuits and gravy. The beef was prepared just right and was very tender. I got a salad, something akin to a Cobb. That was the least tasty but I think I ordered poorly. The big surprise was the complimentary dessert after. The plate of cookies, cupcakes, and cheesecake was just so-so, but the small cups of chocolate mousse were to die for. I would definitely consider going back the next time we are in Chicago, especially in the theater district.
