If all you want is caviar, with impeccable service---then this is the place. Otherwise, the food is quite simply, not good. I ordered 3 oz. of Royal Transmontanus,(A sustainably raised American sturgeon) for $65, while my husband and daughter ordered 3 oz. of just Transmontanus (A younger fish.) for $45, I believe. I could tell the difference, they really couldn't. I also ordered an appetizer portion of the linguine with parmesan and a scattering of Transmontanus caviar. The parmesan was a glob of glue. I had to remove it to eat the pasta. Yuck. My husband had borscht , which he said was sorta okay. Of course, we had a nice champagne to go with the caviar. The whole evening was incredibly expensive. The tasting menu, consisting of more of the bad food was $250 pp. The Art Deco decor at one time must have been beautiful Now the upholstery is a ragged and the seats dumpy from so many tushies. I won't be going back. Instead, I'll buy a nice, big tin from a reputable caviar company, a bottle of champagne to go with, and stay home.
Great treat for me and my wife to go. We did the tasting w/wine pairings... Not sure if it was worth the $450 for both.
In any case I would recommend to take off "bucket" list. :)

Day was Great!
While the place is elegant , it is tired. That shows in the food as well: the cavair was tired, not bright nor full of flavor. Most of the items on the half bottle wine list were no longer available. The foie gras and duck confit sandwich had the potential to be great , but didn't make it. Service was just ok. Won't bother going back. Better choice on Madison Ave for same price
The place to go for caviar. Perfect for an intimate dinner with a friend or significant other. Very beautiful decor and ambience. The tasting menu was impeccable, presentation of each course almost to beautiful to eat. Portions were perfect, and flavors were out of this world. Couldn't have asked for a better first time experience!
Once again, fantastic. The new chef, Richard, is creative and inventive. Everything we ate was delicious. We will be back
A beautiful setting for an excellent dinner. We went there pre-concert (Carnegie Hall is a block away). It was early, so the restaurant was quite empty, but that added to its appeal for us. My wife had one of the caviar combinations, which she enjoyed immensely, while I ate delicious baked Hamachi from the standard menu. expensive, but highly worthwhile.
Caviar was good. Food from menu terrible. Staff courteous but not trained or knowledgable.

A gorgeous and historic space. The chef is highly acclaimed and his bio featured in the menu is appreciated. My party came for a a caviar tasting and, as such, weren't looking for any kind of value menu. The service was impeccable. None of us partook in the chef's tasting menus or the extensive caviar tasting menu but they looked fairly priced and encompassing of all the restaurant had to offer.
I would recommend this restaurant to many but if you have any sensitivity to ambient music, may I suggest this not be the best place for you. With a theatre prix fixe menu, I assume this restaurant caters to those who may be attending a concert at a nearby venue like Carnegie Hall, as we were. The incessant classical gas, Kenny G-esque, elevator versions of 80s pop songs were not only a distraction but a detriment to the dining experience. I implore the management at this restaurant to thoughtfully consider an alternative to the vapid trash oozing from the quality sound system forced upon the diners.

Hard to say where it all went wrong. The fact that there was no mention of a required tasting menu at a high price ($279 with no drinks included) when I booked a few weeks earlier for New Year's Eve for a family of four but that was told to me two days before when they called to confirm. Ok, I get that it is a special time but obviously no one else fell for that as restaurant was pretty near deserted with so many empty tables with pretty blue balloons over them. Food was over elaborate and the caviar portion minimal with an oversized blini - Caviar Russe knows how to do it and someone from Petrossian should visit there to see how to do it!
My wife and I decided to do to Petrossian for New Year's Eve because it was close to where we were staying and the security for the event at Times Square was dominant. Any way the menu was fixed and the prix fixe was high which offered a small amount of caviar to start followed by fois gras over tuna carpaccio then lobster with caviar.All were good. The entree choice was either duck or steak neither of which were that good.Dessert was a frozen pear covered with merinque.The biggest issue we had was that no beverage was included in the price so consuming champagne and wine really added to the bill.WE ordered port to finish and were told it was LBV ruby..turned out it was NV tawny...I rejected the offering and was met with a disgruntled manager's reaction. So approaching a 1000 bill on a special night and being treated hostily was not what we hoped for.
First time and it was everything we expected. Quality was great and on par with the best.
A great place to buy take-home stuff but not for Christmas Eve celebration with special friends. Service was shoddy and amuck, like several people asking if we wanted tap water without bringing water. The first round of drinks took 35 minutes to arrive. One server Jefferson told our one vegan friend "chef" is busy in the kitchen and cannot accommodate you this evening because we have no vegetables in-house. Seriously? They did --an hour later-- present a salad. Holiday music would have been nice instead of radio tunes. At very least, French music should play. One round of bread (no choice, which doesn't fit on the bread plates at all)) came and went and we had to ask for more. The lobster-chicken main course was just okay, and the "spaghetti" starter fit into one spoon. Overall, it's just not the place to eat Caviar anymore, let alone on a special occasion of Christmas eve. The exception to the entire process is the duo of girls who take coats and check-in: very cordial, attentive, and professionally charming.
WAAAAAY overpriced for the food and service (which was not very "professional". Wine/caviar were off the charts. Rather silly. Prefer to go to Jean Georges or La Grenouille. Don't mind spending money if there's VALUE.
Everything was impeccable! Superior in every way. Elegant, romantic. Amazing food and service. An experience that will be remembered by us forever.
It is a tradition, every Xmas and for birthdays, to have caviar, foia gras and champagne.
Too expensive, particularly for the minuscule portions. Value received -zero. Perhaps a green salad might be added to the all white (other than caviar) menu to give lunch diners a better choice.
I would never return nor recommend it.
Although staff professional and caring, certain items have continued to be of poor quality, especially simply smoked salmon. It's still one of New York's loveliest and best located restaurants, but would be more attractive to visit again if pre-theatre menu reinstated.
Big disappointment. None of the extras that should come with caviar or smoked salmon. Caviar served IN ITS JAR! Blini heavy and soggy. High prices and minimal value. Skip this one!
The caviar at Jean Georges FAR superior.
We were absolutely disappointed in the entire experience at Petrossian. Only go there for caviar, which is over priced actually. Every other dish was way to fussy, with too many flavors and way too rich. There really was nothing on the entree menu that appealed to either of us and the NY strip steak was tough and covered with too many other flavors creating such an unpleasant flavor that we both left the entire dish untouched after the first bite. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone!
Some confusion with our order that night. Drink service delayed and not timed well with our tasting dinner. Food interesting but the texture very similar for all courses. I would not recommend the tasting dinner.
The restaurant was more crowded than normal, and the service really suffered. We had to pour our own wine. Probably best to come when there are fewer patrons. Quality of food was up to par however.
Service was slow and lacking. Presentation of food was uneventful and half of the caviar accompaniments (eggs, onion, blini pancakes) were missing and had to be "asked for"
The service was amazing, food tasted absolutely delicious.
Excellent location, excellent food and service. Red wine was served a little warm, but it was quickly iced and resolved to our great satisfaction. Worth coming back to, especially if going to Carnegie Hall.
They have a new chef. The food is amazing now !!!!
The Saturday brunch menu is completely unsatisfactory. VERY few choices, very small portions, not especially tasty. It used to be one of my favorites for lunch.
Petrossian is a NYC establishment: a modern icon built around caviar and champagne. As such, there's nothing that can go wrong there. Every dish is an absolute marvel. Decadence at its very best.
Exquisite classy surroundings . Pricey but phenomenal caviar served with all the accoutrements. Superb staff. Memorable all around. Be prepared to shell out many rubles.
I had the roasted veal which also had some sweetbreads ( yum) and cheek on the plate. It was delicious and perfectly prepared - pink throughout.
However, my husband had the duck breast. He asked for it to be cooked medium. It came to the table bloody and rare. He sent it back. I was nearly finished with my meal by the time his overcooked duck returned. WHY do chefs want to prepare duck so rare? It is gamey, tough and impossible to chew.
I really don't care how "Chef recommends " my food to be prepared. It should be served the way I want it- regardless of whatever trend is in fashion.

It was not our first time in Petrossian. We enjoy every time we list.
Dining at Petrossian is a real treat. The service is exceptional and the food is too. You are treated like royalty by a very professional staff. Elegance is a great word to describe Petrossian.
Food was very mediocre and disappointing and not like I expected as in the past
Has made 10:45 reservations as they were listed as still open. Were seated at 10:48 and proceeded to place or order and the waiter came back and told us that nothing hot could be given to us so could only order the cold appetizers. If not going to be able to serve should have not accepted the reservation or at least told us before we were seated. Otherwise keep to your hours which is my biggest pet peeve with restaurants.
A hostess who gave me every reason to say no to my request for a nice table - and yet the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived.
A hostess who agreed to send us champagne when we sat down to celebrate something but then it never came.
Amuse bouche was fabulous as was the cocktail I ordered but the bar tender forgot to add the champagne so had to come by our table 5 minutes later to add it.
Our waiter came by every two minutes to take our order despite our request to finish our drinks first then disappeared after we got our food - which came in much to fast a rotation. Timing was off all night.
Interesting appetizers but neither of us liked our entrees-my bass was overcooked and had a funny smokey taste and the veal was too fatty. My friend ate next to nothing of it.
Odd and such a disappointing experience as we both are New Yorkers who looked forward.
The manager was not there that night but I doubt his/her presence could put this up to par.
