About

This restaurant is permanently closed. Petits Plats is a very pretty French bistro located in a town house directly across from the Woodley Park metro stop, the Marriott Wardman and Omni Shoreham Hotels. Step inside and you will find affordable delicious food in a very romantic atmosphere. On cold days, dining next to one of the 4 wood burning fireplaces is a nice touch. Summer time, enjoy the great view sitting outside in our private patio: watching the passersby on busy Connecticut avenue is a major amusement!

Lovely, cute place we used to love, but the cooking has slipped a bit. No real complaints, but nothing wowed us. A good place to dine if you're looking for quiet, uncrowded atmosphere.

Disappointed. The bread was the best part of the meal, but late. Don't think we will be back.

These days, I'm always suspect of reviews on any site. Looking at all the reviews on this site and others, I am going to be objective in my speculation. First, based on all the awards hanging on the entrance wall, all several years old, I think there was a change in ownership, but not sure when. The alternative is there are two sets of cooks and staff. One that is excellent, another set locked them in the freezer while they took over. We got the latter. We only tried a few appetizers and two drinks. My drink, house chardonnay, was not chardonnay, but I couldn't get anyone's attention to fix it - I expect it was a rough tasting sav. blanc ,the only other white by the glass. My glass was dirty also. Bread arrived but was toasted, which was odd. My wife ordered a kir royal, one of their recommendations by the glass, it was completely flat and way too much creme de casis - tasted like a melted italian ice. Point being whomever was handling the drinks had no idea what they were doing. I ordered the soup of the day, tomato, and should have realized that tomatoes are not in season. Tasted like Campbell's. And cold. Service was earnest but unorganized. Not sure why, it was not that busy. We decided to cut our losses and not order dinner, so your experience may vary. I can usually spot a fake review (several exclamation points are the first give away) but other relatively recent reviews seem genuine, so I am confused. Price? Two bowls of soup and two drinks cost $50. Ambiance? It is a converted old row house. Some say quaint, some say worn. I have no opinion. When I rate a restaurant overall, I give one when I am angry, two when I am just sad. I am giving two stars here. Couple of small changes could make it better.

Elegant, yet comfortable environment with delicious food. The onion soup was fabulous and the warm French bread delivered to the table tasted as if you were in Paris. Whole table loved their food: escargot and Muscles for one, fennel salad and beef bourguigonon for another. For the third at our table Calamari and cassoulet and for me onion soup and steak frites. Everything was delicious!

Petite Plats is one of my wife's and my favorite neighborhood restaurants. We were pleased that the foie gras was being served and was up to PP's high standards. We were advised to call ahead to confirm before coming as this isn't always on the menu. The warm goat cheese on toast appetizer with mixed green salad was also terrific. The main courses were good but not outstanding this time, and we didn't order dessert as we've learned from previous visits they are not the restaurant's high point. The wine list was strong, and the bordeaux I selected by the glass was tasty and good value for the money. The decor is simple but charming, and for a hearing challenged diner the noise level is manageable. We will return but will hope for more variety in the main courses and vegetables going forward.

My wife and I go every time we are in Washington DC. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is quant. Small intimate and elegant. I alway plan on dessert and and I am always too full to eat one after the plentiful delicious food. The kitchen made a dish that is no longer on the menu, but just the mention of it and they jumped at preparing it for us. Bot am I glad they didn’t it was incredible. I cannot recommend them strongly enough for a cozy excellent meal.

The style of the restaurant is intimate and and personal. However service was indifferent. Nobody greeted us and we were treated in an off hand manner. The prices are exorbitant and you would expect a level of service that reflects that. The food however was very good.

It has a lovely ambiance with the fire place burning and the waiter was very cordial, friendly and sufficiently attentive but he missed a few things. When ordering the venison, I asked to exchange the bokchoy for broccoli...wasn't done so I had to ask that my plate be returned to do so. Drink refills were not done without an effort on my part. Venison wasn't prepared correctly to make it tender and was tough to eat. (I'm a hunter and I know what one has to do to make venison tender.) I should have ordered the filet mignon instead. The appetizer, mushrooms with a poached egg, was excellent so I would recommend that as was the dessert, creme brulee. My dinner date's Sea Scallops was enjoyed however the arugula salad was a bit dry. For a French restaurant I was disappointed with the Menu. No Beef Bourguignon, duck confit, snails or steak tartare offered. Of course, and as always, "less is more" at these restaurants. I think our bill was around $175.00 for two with only one beer on the tab, a soda, two appetizers, two entrees and one dessert. If we ever returned, it would probably be for appetizers only with a glass of wine perhaps.

If you are looking for a restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal and can have a conversation without having to shout across the table, Petits Plats is the place to go. The menu offers classic dishes from southern French such as cassoulet and bouillabaisse, plus medaillons de boeuf, all well prepared and attractively served. The wine list is relatively short but with very good selections at reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and helpful. A real fire in the fireplace will keep you warm.

The food was very good, i had the steak frites and my husband had the salmon, which was also very good. The service was very good as well. We would recommend this restaurant. The only complaint is that the wine was just ok and the pour was very chintzy in a small glass...each glass was like 3 sips....

After a poor experience (at a different restaurant) the previous night, this was a delight. The outside dining suffered a little from mosquitoes, but otherwise had a very enjoyable energy from the local music and street traffic. Service was near-perfect: attentive but not fussy, responsive and smiling, very well-paced. Value was pretty decent, and the food was almost all very good: a perfect salad to start that woke up the palate; a good boeuf bourgignon; well-priced cocktails and wines; a willingness to deviate slightly from the menu when asked.
The bread pudding didn't quite match up: too stolid and heavy, a dense glutenous lump rather than the joy that a good bread pudding can be. But I left happy - very much recommended.

This is one of the more pleasant French restaurants in town. It is rather informal, and you are welcomed like family. The location is a bit odd, above a pizza parlor and across the street from several big hotels. But it is well worth a visit. What attracts us is that this is one of the few restaurants where you can have a conversation without having to shout. When we were there, it was very hot, and the air conditioning was not working. The cooling came from a table-side cool-air blower.

The menu is French, with mostly standard items, and the wine list has some unusual items. We opted for a 4-course degustation with wine pairing ($80 p.p): foie gras, scallop, lamb steak and choice of three deserts, with a glass of champagne, sauvignon blanc, bordeaux and armagnac (other choices are possible). Everything was well prepared and attractively served. The service was attentive and helpful.
