Wonderful time. The food was outstanding!!
As always it was an awesome dining experience
Peter Shields Inn is a bed and breakfast that also has a delicious restaurant. Typical prices for a "special occasion" restaurant. The ambience is wonderfully victorian with a great view of the beach and Atlantic Ocean. Service was timed nicely and efficient. The meal Itself was outstanding. I had the duck that melted in my mouth. I would definitely return to this restaurant to celebrate another occasion.
I have always wanted to dine at Peter Shields and brought my sister and dear friend in from Chicago to finally get the opportunity. We pulled up and thought how majestic the building looked. I was surprised a restaurant of this supposed caliber did not offer valet parking to better serve its' patrons. Our reservation was for 8 PM. We arrived on time and were greeted by a young woman at a check in desk and was told people were finishing their dessert and there wasn't a table ready to seat us. She told us there was a lounge down the staircase which was off the main floor. The doorway had the word "restroom" above it. I was not interested sitting to wait for our table outside the restroom in the basement. Shortly after another young woman greeted us and told us to do the same thing. I explained to her we are now waiting 10 minutes and I had hoped our table would be ready soon. We stayed together in the foyer where there was only 1 seat. Were they kidding me. Were we in their way? Servers were passing through the foyer to serve other clients. What was the hang-up from the staff? It certainly wasn't to better serve us. The feeling was overall they didn't like us standing there where other clients could see we were not being seated. One would expect from a restaurant such as this they would not have kept us waiting. We were finally seated 20 minutes later than our reservation. The atmosphere was pretty however the food also lacked a great deal of luster with the exception of the potato leak soup and lamb stew. If you decide to go dine here please take advantage of the special pre-fix dinner as that is about as much as I would pay for a meal to dine there. Our strip steak looked lovely but was inedible. When I asked the waiter if it was sirloin he said "we don't serve sirloin at Peter Shields and we don't serve prime until the summer." Really??? The hoity did not live up to the hipe! There are much better choices in Cape May and glad we didn't pay full price!
PSI never disappoints. We are so lucky to have an establishment of this caliber blocks from our home. The cuisine, service, ambiance are all top notch and done with the utmost of class yet warm and inviting. PSI staff care about your experience - you are not just a number to them. We look forward to our next visit over the Easter holiday!
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Service, ambiance & food were all fantastic.
One of our favorite Cape May restaurants . Pretty view of the beach from our table . Wonderful piano player along with fine food . Delicious sea bass , after wonderful mushroom soup . Homemade sorbets and ice cream also good . Kim , our server was great . She’s been there for years , and helped make it a lovely experience .
Beautiful environs, excellent service and top notch meal for a beach town. Rib eye was delicious arctic char scrumptious. Remember BYOB
Great service and very tasty food selection.
Better than I could have dreamed, New York Strip was delicious!
From the pleasant welcome greeting to the Have a Good Evening its was 5 stars all the way.
Creative menu that is always changing and well prepared. The servers know everything on the menu in great detail . Our server that evening Amy was outstanding, a nicely paced meal and very attentive. Can’t wait to ge back.
Been there before and they don’t disappoint. Very good meal!!
We always love going to Peter Shields and with the prefix special this month it made it even better! We have come in 2x n the last 2 months and hope to get in again soon! Carl is amazing, the staff is impeccable, the glassware and cutlery are a compliment to everything. Your host/ess is always professional and welcoming. We will continue to dine with you as we know what we will get every single visit! Consistency and creativity are the big win for us!! Many thanks! Carole and Tim Donohue
Always a pleasure. The winter prix fixe menu is a great deal
Started with mushroom soup which was velvety smooth. Duck was delicious!
Outstanding! The wife and I were celebrating our 5th anniversary. The wait staff made it a special night for us, the food was excellent as well. Go there for a special occasion.
great food & service, the piano player is a definite plus. Very Romantic.
Loved our dinner. Some of the finest food in south jersey.
We dined Sunday evening, February 25th, and enjoyed the dinner Pre-fixe menu. This restaurant is top notch fine dining and did not disappoint. Several menu options to choose from. I highly recommend having dinner here. Service is always GREAT, on point. Also note, it is a BYOB.
Great ambience, service from the hostess, server was exceptional. Pianist was excellent. Food was well thought out and left you wanting more... 5 Stars all the way...
PSI was great. The location is perfect directly across the street from the beach. The food was really delicious. I had the chef tasting menu and all the course were amazing, especially the veal. My husband ordered the tuna tartar with was very fresh. I enjoyed my mushroom soup a lot! They have English toffee cake on the dessert menu (which is rarely seen on menus) and it was superb! PSI is BYO...so definitely bring your wine!
Dottie was great! The food prepared by Chef Carl was outstanding.
Great atmosphere. Good food. Had steak duo. Worth the price on ocassion. Spent $148.00 and brought my own wine. Could use some lower priced options
Service and food was great. Prefixed menu had great options for appetizers, entree and dessert. BYOB another plus.
Very pretty restaurant and the service was excellent. I feel the food was over priced for the quality. I know they were on a modified menu for Valentine's week but I had the Lobster Bisque which while flavorful was a little thin. My Monk Fish was very good, but my girlfriend had the Pork Loin and it was a bit dry...again tasted very good. Our table was in the corner and the way it's set up I was looking directly at the couple on one side and she was looking directly at the couple on the other side, it was a little akward. I would like to try it again when they're not featuring a Prix Fixe menu.
The food here as always been wonderful. Whether I have ordered short ribs, steaks, or any seafood it is always so delectable. Pefect romantic night!
Peter Shields is our favorite romantic restaurant in Cape May. The food is excellent and consistent. Love the historic Colonial Revival building. Two of the best things about it are that it is a BYOB and there are no meters to feed all year round.
Best restaurant in Cape May, NJ. Maybe the best in NJ. Elegant, delicious fancy food, excellent service, live piano music, quiet enough. Just wonderful. Our favorite restaurant anywhere.
This is one of our favorite restaurants down the shore. We try to go every time we are in the area. It is so beautiful, the food is amazing and the service top notch! They always make it a special night.
Really great meal and beautiful place to spend the evening. We have already made our next reservations.
Outstanding for sure, is a Peter Shields experience. From the warm welcome at the door and the live pianist greeting you as you enter, the bar remains high here for the entire evening. This past Saturday night was our third visit in the past year and a half with the same friends, and each one of us has always been completely satisfied, and then some. The staff is professional, attentive and pleasant, and the food is excellent. This is a BYOB and we enjoy bringing several wine choices with us, and they are well taken care of and served to us as if we had selected them off a fine wine list. The regular menu and specials are excellent, but don't ever hesitate to try the chef's pairings or a prix fixe menu when they are offered; I cant imagine anyone being disappointed. Peter Shields is our new favorite place in Cape May, and there are a lot of good competitors!
Outstanding time! We were treated like royalty! Everyone there “gets it”! Food was superb! Pricey-but you get what you pay for! Was our 1st time there. Will not be the last!
Excellent food and service! We dined here on President's day weekend as two couples celebrating the birthday of one of the group's members. Two of us had the Prix-Fix menu and two ordered off the standard menu. With the choices available on the Prix-Fix, everyone ended up with something completely different -- and EVERYTHING was excellent and well prepared! We also had very attentive, but not overbearing service that was well timed. In the background was a live pianist playing light, familiar music to add to the evening.
You will spend some $$ at this place, but since it is a BYOB, you save there on your drinks; and I firmly believe in "you get what you pay for" -- this place provided excellent food and service for the price you do pay!
One of our favorite places! Wonderful food, wonderful service, wonderful atmosphere!!!
You can't improve on perfection! Food was utterly amazing! Ambiance couldn't have been more perfect for our Valentines/ 25th Anniversary Dinner. I highly recommend The Peter Shields Inn for an awesome affair!
Absolutely outstanding once again. Consistently provides a great night on a very high level. RJ, our waiter, was awesome!
Chef Carl is a master of his craft. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. If you do eat here, ask for Dottie as a server. She was wonderful. Will be back soon!
We've been visiting the Peter Shields Inn for the last 15 years on Valentine's Day, awesome experience. Love the piano player.
Always a fantastic experience, this restaurant never disappoints. From the romantic atmosphere with live piano player to attentive staff and delicious food, this is one restaurant your really don’t want to miss.
OK, so this review isn't so good for a restaurant that is generally great.
We live nearby and go there often. On Valentines Day they featured an aged, prime NY strip "special" at $80 (I was salivating! ). I expected it to be better than their "normal" $60 NY strip..... It turned out to be a bad steak
There was a whole lot that added up to our bad experience including:
- it was Valentines Day and I wasn't inclined to make a scene (MY BAD!!!!)
- our server went missing for the entire time it took to eat our meal (we had to pour our own wine during the meal!)... no opportunity to complain...I wasn't about to get up and run around to find someone
- the food runner did ask how our meals were but before I could explain that my steak was poor, he laughed and ran away (I assume he misunderstood me?)
My steak was:
- Very small (probably a good thing)
- Mostly fat
- Over-cooked (somewhere past medium versus the request of medium rare)
- Tasted a bit "off"... "spoiled"
In summary, we paid $80 for one of the worst steaks I've ever had. I believe PSI might have gotten hosed by their supplier but that's just a guess. Holiday supply chains are sometimes difficult in their business.
My wife's meal (a different dish) was wonderful as is usual at PSI.
Our server finally returned for our dessert order but never asked about the entrée and I didn't volunteer (my bad again). The hostess did ask about our meals on our way out. I told the truth in a nice way and she offered to replace my meal....... REALLY?!... do they think we would want to hang around the crowded lobby waiting for a handout at 9:30 PM on Valentines Day? There had to be a better option. Ummm, quietly passing along a small gift certificate would seem like a win-win.
We'll go back to PSI because they are really good at what they do but I have to say that we probably won't go on Mothers Day or Valentines. I guess any business can screw up when they are stressed.
