Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We recently moved to the New Bern area from Southern California. We are foodies, and Persimmons is outstanding.
My husband and I enjoyed this filet mignon because it was perfectly prepared. It was cooked to order and the meat was tender and juicy.
A friend of ours ordered the shrimp and grits, which he said was excellent. Our other friend ordered "the special" which was a ravioli. She couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was.
The service was outstanding. The wait staff was attentive and informative.
We eat out a lot, and I would rank Persimmons in the top five restaurants we've experienced. That ranking includes restaurants in Southern California!
Yes, Persimmons costs a bit more, but it is worth every penny.
This restaurant was within walking distance of our hotel, and the location on the water is beautiful. It was comfy and quiet, and the service was great.
Food was delicious! My husband had the short rib with white truffles; pricey, but he really enjoyed it! I️ opted for the fresh catch (grouper) and it was also amazing! Sauces nicely flavored, and we had plenty to eat without additional sides (although we both ordered a small salad; not on the menu). Vanilla dressing was very nice. And decaf coffee was a great way to end this truly special meal
The server was ok, but she was constantly disclosing items the restaurant did not have; no oysters, some dishes unavailable. She did miss a few instructions. Salad come out beautiful, but was ordered without onions. On the redo, salad came back half the size. The calamari is worth it. Try it. Friend tomatoes were good, but heavy on the breading flavor. The steak was cooked to perfection. As this was dinner for four, and my cost of $250, restaurants like this should never not have any ingredients though. They don’t run out of items at Chipotle and dinner for four costs $220 less. I mean if you’re missing mushrooms for the steak, get your but over to Piggly Wiggly or whatever you have to do to get it done, right? I’m not sure the location is something I would go back to unless I really had to. It’s a tough decision.
We ate outside in an unseasonable warm October, and it was delightful. Our server was a bit too smiley and chatty, but that’s better than being ignored. We ordered pretty ordinary fare (soup and sandwiches, fish and chips), so can’t judge the more creative offerings. We had reservations for a Saturday lunch, but I’m not sure they would have been necessarily. The outdoor patio area has only a couple of tables that are on the same level as the restaurant. The other areas require stairs. I observed several people with canes and a walker who apparently wanted to eat outside and had to opt for indoors.
Two weeks ago we were their and they ran out of decaf coffee. This visit they were out of Grey Goose Vodka. A restaurant of this caliber should not run out of these common items. On our previous visits the food was good. This visit not so much. They dinner music was good until half way through out dinner they shut if off. We will return when the weather permits comfortable outside dining but we will expect better.
A perfect setting for a really good lunch. We picked the ideal day for outside eating. All three of us had soup with half a sandwich. It was very good. Bloody Mary was WONDERFUL. Disappointed that frozen drinks (margaritas or daiquiris )are not available. We had good service. The lunch menu is quite varied, but we just all happened to choose the same thing! From past experiences there I know the crab cakes are delicious!
Dining experience overall was a big disappointment. You better like pork belly, its in almost every dish on menu. Service was slow, timing of our courses was off. We were still eating our appetizers when they wanted to bring our main course. As a result my meal was tepid at best. Our server disappeared, we had to flag down another server. Management did comp my main course but by that time all we wanted to do was leave.
So many better restaurants in New Bern to enjoy
I really want to love this place and rate it 5 stars, but my last few visits have left a sour taste in my mouth. Their menu is great and uses fresh and local ingredients whenever possible. The waitstaff is always very nice and attentive without being overbearing. However, the execution of the dishes really has left something to be desired. We had dinner here about a year ago or so and were not super impressed. I don't mind paying $30+ a plate, but I expect it to live up to that price. Since then, we've done brunch a number of times. The last two times, we've had issues with our order - which I understand happens, but it seems to be a pattern. In the first recent visit, I asked for my burger medium-rare - and the patty came out looking like charcoal. They did the right thing and replaced it with something else, but it's still disruptive to the meal to not get what you order. The most recent visit, I was brought the completely wrong dish (shrimp and grits) when I ordered the tomato pie. They kindly left me the shrimp and grits to snack on while waiting for my food with everyone else having theirs (side note - in grits/pasta dishes, I don't understand leaving the shrimp tails on - seems like a choking hazard or mouth cut waiting to happen). My wife ordered a steak medium-rare, and again, the meat was cooked to well. That's not to say it wasn't good, but it wasn't what she ordered. They did offer to replace it for her, but by that point we just decided to keep eating since we didn't want to wait longer. I'll probably give this place another shot in a month or two, since there aren't many options in New Bern, but I'll definitely wait to have dinner there until the lunch/brunch game is tightened up.
Everything was wonderful. Exceptional food! It was our server's first night. She had a couple slip-ups, but was on top of just about everything. She'll be a great server with a bit more practice. The pricing is reflective of the menu and presentation. I recommend highly!
We enjoyed dining at Persimmons--the food was overall tasty and of fresh quality. The fish was truthfully fresh, ice cream was genuine (e.g., the rum raisin really did have rum and raisins), etc.
The eve we were there, our table was sandwiched between two others, and we ended up conversing with the people at those two tables, so it was a friendly and sociable ambiance as well.
Service was slightly erratic (e.g., appetizer arrived before bread basket) and at time a bit slow, but otherwise the server was friendly and accommodating of our requests.
View was lovely too, on the river, easy to get to, available parking, etc.
We selected the location as a birthday celebration. We desired an experience to remember. We were not disappointed. The brussel sprouts were fabulous. Our server was terrific in helping us decide on the meals. The food was unbelievably good. The coffee service consisted of a special roast just for Persimmons. The desserts were wonderful. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. We were not disappointed. Thank you, Persimmons for making a birthday dinner extraordinary.
I had been to Persimmons several times in the past and was disappointed. However, with the most recent change in chefs, the meal was amazing! As a New Bern resident, I am very familiar with the local farmers and to know that Persimmons uses their products is pleasing. For apps, we shared the brussels sprouts and fried green tomatoes which were large enough to have been a light meal. All 4 of us had a different main course: diver scallops, tomato pie, shrimp and grits, and hanger steak. These were not the typical regional dishes; each were prepared with a special chef's touch (pimento cheese purses, geechee grits, etc.). Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the recipes and seemed proud to describe and present them. Oh, then there was the homemade ice cream (some requiring proof of drinking age!). We were celebrating our son and daughter-in-law's anniversary, and the special touches to the meals were celebration appropriate! They had a great selection of microbrewery beers and novel summer cocktails. Yes, the menu items were on the expensive end, but the serving sizes and preparation were well worth the cost!
My husband and I drove out to New Bern from Charlotte for the weekend. Persimmons was on the short list of restaurants that we wanted to try. When we realized that it was walking distance to our hotel, it went to the top and we are so glad!!! The food and service are amazing. Farm to table food done in innovative ways. Live music as you sit outside and view the water. If you are in New Bern, you must go!
