Simply put, delicious! We came with a Groupon with our toddler, and even though he was screaming a bit, the staff there were very accommodating. It also helped that we were there before 6pm on a Saturday, so we were the only ones there at the time.
The service was good, and the food was as well. We had the Pero's platter for two, and my favourite was the beef. The lentils were a bit too spicy for my wife, and was on my upper range as well.
Decor is nice & cultural, with some soft relaxing music in the background.
My wife kept saying that she's looking forward to coming back, and I am as well!
Servers seemed a little dazed and confused
Fancy and nice Ethiopian restaurant. Fish goulash is a must. Coffee is amazing. One of the best Ethiopian restaurants I have been to!
Went here for Winterlicious dinner on Friday, January 27 with a couple of girlfriends. We were greeted by the owner himself and what a pleasant man! Staff were nice and attentive throughout the night. Nice, cosy, comfortable and eclectic atmosphere decked out with images, niknaks and paintings from and inspired from the homeland.
FOOD was incredible! We had the Collard Greens & Split Pea and Veggie Rolls for the appetizers. Beautifully presented and very delicious. For our main dishes, we had Beef Tibsi and Fish Goulash. I'm not a huge spicy eater and the awaze and berbere were mixed in other spices to create more of a flavour than just heat. Servers explained how to eat the dishes which was greatly appreciated, being our first time eating Ethiopian food. For dessert, we all shared the Coffee Cake, Chocolate Cake and Cheesecake. All were very good and not too sweet. Portion sizes of all dishes were perfect. Highly recommend this place and will be returning to try other items on the menu. Thank you Pero!
Upon arrival we got seated really quick. A server took our drink orders, then our food options, even providing a few suggestions in terms of alternatives since all of our picks were very similar. Which I really appreciated. We needed up waiting a good 20 minutes for our drinks, which I would understand had they been busy, but that wasn't the case at 7pm when we arrived. When we got the drinks, none of them were very strong, I don't mean drown us in alchohol, but surely you ought to feel the liquor working somewhat, that wasn't the case at all. While ordering our food I explicitly mentioned we wanted the beef variation of the dish and that chicken seemed plain. When the food arrived two of the tibs dishes are chicken, they did however get the vegetable dishes we ordered right, although there is no beef on the plate. After realizing they got the order wrong, I pointed it out to the server, she takes our plate from which we had started eating the vegetables and other dishes, leaving two members of my party of three looking around waiting. Seeing how it was a mistake on the restaurants part, they could have left us to eat from what was served, while they made the beef dish or ask is the substitution was alright. All in all we waited another 10 minutes for the food to arrive yet again. For me this was a huge turnoff towards the rest of the meal. It's not like they would use what was served to us for another customer....at least I hope they don't. Mistakes happen, I get that but it should not have been handled this way.
All that being said for the price, the flavours weren't all there. I've visited several Ethiopian restaurants in the Ossington area. Pero, despite having the better ambience, lacked in the spices and flavours that define the cuisine. Lalibela down the street offers more value in terms of price and quantity and tastes way better than Pero any day.
Very cosy and friendly restaurant, with really tasty food and ample portions. A great place for casual dining with friends.
A tasty introduction to Ethiopian food, in a very pleasant, informal and comfortable ambience. Be prepared to eat with your fingers, though, and don't worry about getting them dirty - you're going to be able to clean your hands in water brought to the table at the end of the meal!
Pero is a hidden gem. Excellent, spicy (or not if you prefer) tasty food. It was a culinary food explosion going on in our mouths. Everyone loved their meals and pretty much ate everything off their plate. We will definitely be going back. In fact, it's going to be our favorite spot. Thy also have live music downstairs but we didn't get a chance to check it out because we were too busy enjoying our food and the ambience. The chef even made a special salad dressing for my daughter. We love Pero and can't wait to go back. You should go.
Great food and ambiance, brilliant service with special care and attention from the owner. One of our best dining experiences in Toronto, an absolute must-try!
We hadn't tried Eritrean food before. We loved it. We liked the veggie rolls and the fish goulash best. Goes well with beer. Delicious food, gracious service, overall a great experience.
Pero was a terrific fun. The African menu was a great new dining experience for us. The service was attentive and educated us on what we were experiencing - right down to how to eat it correctly. Pero himself just added to the event - a full of life character that welcomed us and made sure we were taken care of. I will be back!
I was pleased to find Pero. It is an alternative to the other established Ethiopian restaurants on the area. Food was very good and there were some interesting finds, such as the flaxseed dip. Worth of coming back!
My boyfriend and my favourite date night restaurant! found it by fluke and decided to give it a shot and it has become our go to. Pero is wonderful and really cares about making sure his guests are happy!
I've been here before and loved the food, and this time was no exception. The folks at Pero went above and beyond to make my friend's birthday a hit. They have us the private tent room in the back and were very attentive all evening. We had several visually impaired friends with us, and the staff did everything they could to make all of us feel at home - they even gave my friend a birthday shot on the house while lighting the bar on fire! A very memorable and delicious evening had by all. Thank you, Pero!
While the food was delicious it was expensive for the portion sizes. Expect at least 2 hours for dinner. Very pretty restaurant and the servers were kind.
Unique food and nice friendly service.
From the warm welcome, ambient decor, gracious staff & the beautiful aromatic coffee rituals - Pero knocks it out of the park before they even serve you their delicious food!
This place is always the first I recommend to folks looking for a casual warm friendly dining experience in the west end. Enjoy the space & then savour the best food you will have in awhile.
The best.
Despite being late for our reservation was seated quickly the premises were busy . Seemed a little disorganized at first but once settled in service was very friendly and helpful. Once the food arrived the owner came over to make sure everything was fine. He notice what we had order he then went to the kitchen and brought out one of his Favorite dishes a spicey mushroom and suggested we try it and it would go with what we order it was a good suggestion . He also took the time to discuss the tradition that went with the food . An excellent experience . Food was excellent very tasty would certainly go back and would bring a group for a fun night out.
The ambiance is really cool at this restaurant but the $32.00 vegetarian plate just will not do.
Too much Ethiopin bread - not enough and tasty fillings.
Meat dish $16.00 overpriced for the type of meat presented.
Enjoyed the food much more 2 years ago. Still happy to see the place full on a Saturday night.
This was our first experience eating Ethiopian food. The owner, Pero, was incredibly gracious and made us feel very welcome. He guided us through the food choices and created a custom meal so that we could try many dishes. The food was absolutely delicious!
Fantastic food. excellent service and a nice and quiet resturaunt. It was actually fun because of the day you have to eat food there. Two thumbs up. strongly recommended.
The food portion was too little compared to price. I took the platter of 20 dollars and was slightly disappointed of the portion. Its not a posh restaurant but a normal restaurant. In 20 dollars of an Indian cuisine I get a huge platter of 8 portions..relatively keeps my stomach full. But here, I was left hungry after the meal.
fantastic experience! this was our first time having Ethiopian, and it did not disappoint. wait staff, and the owner were fabulous, greeted us at the door, extremely attentive! owner walked us through the menu, everything we had was based on his suggestions, and it was incredible! such a unique and fun experience - truly authentic! plan to go back soon!
Came as a large group, sharing platters were an excellent way to try everything. Very delicious.
Ambiance was great, staff were great, price was very reasonable.
Made for a very fun evening out.
The evening was perfect. Trying a new restaurant and cuisine. Greeted at the door by the owner who was energetic, positive and welcoming. Our server was adorable. She was able to help us select the right dinner and was always there when we needed her. The food was amazing. Definitely going back.
The service was excellent, a lady explained how to experience the food properly, recommended some great dishes! Never had Ethiopian food before, wasn't as bad as i thought. Great experience overall :)
Visiting Pero restaurant for winterlicious was truly amazing. The staff were sweet and helpful with the menu and took time to go over everything after asking if we had been there before. I believe our servers name was Sasha and she was really great. it is a cozy venue which was great for my boyfriend, his friend and I but would be even nicer for a date spot. Only a couple of tables seemed like they were on dates and the rest were friends but there is a romantic feel when you walk in this place that would make it special for two. In the back there is a section which is extra romantic and has curtains and seats a few tables And looks more like a private lounge. The coffee ceremony was awesome- they let you smell the beans and then they roast and brew them in the back. You can smell the entire process and when it arrives to your table, they provide freshly popped popcorn to go with it. Both were yummy. The only thing I would recommend was that the portions were a bit larger. It was enough for me but the guys were still hungry after leaving. Perhaps when we go when winterlicious is over, the portions will be larger? Overall it wouldn't stop us from coming back!
Food was very diverse and the staff marvelous. We went for Winterlicious and are looking forward to coming back for the full menu. Love the culture and getting to know Ethiopia.
Food is great. A bit confusing to eat at first.
The servers are either very inexperienced or unknowledgable. I think the kitchen is also somewhat slow. Either that or there is miscommunication. There was also a long wait before our appetizer came and then and then an equally long one waiting for the main. It was just me and one other person too and it wasn't very busy yet. They're friendly and do seem like they are doing their best though.
My biggest qualm is that I asked for a gin rickey (gin, soda water, lime) and the server happily took the order. I saw her scan the drinks menu as she walked away. She stopped in confusion and came back to tell me they didn't carry that. A bit doubtful, I asked for a gin & tonic (gin, tonic water, lime) which they did carry. She also neglected to ask if I had any preference for what gin they used so I had to specify. I'm surprised such a well stocked bar doesn't have soda water but based on the confusion of the server's face it's more likely she didn't know what a gin rickey was. It's a pretty standard drink. The G&T was tasty though so it's really a shame the server wasn't better trained.
We went to Pero's for the first time on the Friday after New Year's Eve. We have never experienced such great attention from a restaurant owner and his staff ever before. Pero visited our table several times from describing the best dishes on the menu to explaining the basics of Eritrean and Ethiopian food. He finished off with a complimentary after dinner liqueur and a special "show". The food was really interesting as well - nothing like anything we've had before (and we have been all over the world). Very tasty!
My significant other and I went here and really enjoyed the experience. The server gave us an ap that wasn't on the menu for New Years and I find myself craving it as I'm writing this review. The set up was beautiful and I loved how the tables were spaced out to allow for a really nice and quiet romantic evening. They have a great set up for large groups and the coffee ritual was fantastic. Definitely cannot wait to hit this spot up again!
The servers were so attentive, polite and always there to help.
Delicious African food and comfortable atmosphere. It was a different experience to eat with your fingers. Wine was good. Staff were very friendly and helpful. That we could book a table online was convenient.
Being new to Toronto, we asked resident Eritreans where we could take two non-Eritreans out for an Eritrean meal and we were recommended to go to Pero's. We were not disappointed. The food was good, the ambience great (we went on a Sunday evening). The only comment I would like to make is that the Qategna (spelt with a K on the menu!) was delicious but had salt grains on it which made it too salty. I would have preferred to have the Qategna in triangular double layer injeras instead of it being rolled ala sushi but that's a personal preference. The 4 -Person platter didn't have a "Tsebhi" - sauce - dish so we had to order that separately. It would have been great if it came with at least one "tsebhi".
Pero Restaurant satisfies every time! The food and Pero's awesome attention to the customer's overall eating experience.
My party consisted of 6 and we had one of the best food experiences in Toronto.
It was the first time for 5 of us eating at a restaurant with our hands but it was part of what made our experience a unique one.
I booked this when looking for a night out. I saw the previous reviews and thought it would be something different and a unique night out. The food was very different and quite good. We had a mixed platter. We found it very interesting to be eating with our hands. I would certainly recommend trying this at least once.
A chance to try something different for us as far as food is concerned. Quiet atmosphere - nice for a change. Service helpful and cheerful. Enjoyed the experience very much, 1/2 a century.
We had dinner at Pero for our second anniversary after seeing the great reviews online. It was a great experience! The outside of the restaurant is quite deceiving as the interior is really beautiful and has a great ambiance, especially for those looking for a more romantic and intimate setting. We'd forgotten that there is no cutlery, which of course enhanced the experience for us, however we did find that the sour dough bread called injera did cover up the flavour of some dishes as it does have a distinct and un-ignorable flavour and texture of its own. It was too hard to simply scoop up the lentil stew with our fingers (we did try) but its all part of the fun! Waitresses were patient and friendly. We really recommend everyone try it out!
Decor was beautiful. Very tranquil and relaxing. Food was fantastic. Try the cha cha (lamb) and ask for some uzo to be mixed with your hot sauce.
