What Insiders Are Saying
A classic Greek restaurant that's been around since the 80's, and still holds up today.
The pink room, the finest service, probably the best bloody Mary and striped bass. As always, above all, delicious.
This is an excellent restaurant. The food is really, really good, the service is friendly and good, the place is very attractive. You won’t go wrong in having lunch or dinner here.
Wonderful engaging service coupled with outstanding food and drink made for a terrific evening
Time and time again Periyali does not disappoint. Lamb chops that melt in your mouth and Octopus that makes you feel like you're at a taverna in Mykons. LOVE
If you enjoy Greek food you will this very quaint location with special attention to detail. Food is high quality and well designed.
The waitress complained about the tip and force me to tip more than I wanted. Unacceptable service. I will never come back and I will discourage people from going there
Wonderful attentive service. Elegant comfortable ambiance. Perfectly prepared fish. Most enjoyable.
Meh. Meal was pretty good but service was inattentive and clumsy. Took a friend for her birthday and was embarrassed.
I returned because I remembered a delicious pompano dinner the last time. This time, it was less crowded. We sat in the first room and I had striped bass and purees with warm pita bread. All was excellent. The server was friendly and efficient. I really liked this restaurant for its understated ambiance, fresh flowers, etc.
Food is fantastic. However, be warned that the bussers are a little too eager to take your plate away before everyone has even finished their meal. I go back for the food but not the service.
We loved the bronzino and the Greek tomato and feta cheese salad as well as the spinach pie assortment.
We used to eat here when we lived in NYC many year ago. Everything was just as wonderful as I remembered. The food, great, and friendly, professional service. Lovely experience.
our waiter, Mack was great - very knowledgeable regarding the menu and offered good wine selections
This place had been around a long time and its warm feel and excellent food continue to make dining there a treat.
Loved our New Year's Eve dinner in every respect: food, service, ambiance. The veal special was particulary good, as was the octopus appetizer. We have celebrated an early NYE dinner at Periyali for several years and hope to continue for a long time to come!
Family get together
Wonderful evening. Lovely atmosphere and friendly helpful staff.
Food was incredible!!! That’s coming from a Greek. Best Octopus Ever!!! Can’t wait to return!!
Service was too slow for number of people in restaurant when we entered for holiday lunch for members of me work team.
Periyali was everything I wanted it to be for last-minute date night. Service was impeccable from the moment I walked through the door-- the host greeted many guests by name, suggesting that this is a place with lots of regulars.
The food was delicious- rich without being heavy, fresh and filling.
I'm not usually a white-tablecloth kind of gal, but this was elegant without being stuffy.
Best of all, it feels like an expensive restaurant but with moderate prices.
I've been for lunch and dinner. Recommend both.
Periyali is an extraordinary restaurant for a very unusual reason - people might go there once a year, once every couple of years (as we sat in the bar, an elderly citizen came in and said happily, "I haven't been here in 25 years" which bearing in mind that it was founded in the late 1980s meant he hadn't been there since more or less when it was founded), or once a week, but everyone regards it as "their restaurant" and the staff are as welcoming to a complete newcomer as they are to someone who props up the bar three times a week and leaves a large tip. Great food, wonderful service and excellent value for money.
Everything was outstanding -
The best pita and tsaziki I’ve ever had. Incredible octopus. My friend’s chicken was incredible, and my sea bass was divine.
A good friend contacted me the day before she was flying to NYC from California on Thursday for just one night and was I free. So....I had to get a reservation on short notice...all the places that I wanted to go to, we couldn't get in until 9:30 or 10:00 and she had meetings in the a.m. so we couldn't go that late. In any case, I was able to get into Periyali at 8:30p...It was perfect. I can't speak about the menu too much except to say that its Greek as we only got 3 starters and wine - the Pita with Hummus, cucumber sauce and eggplant - Greek salad - Grilled octopus - they were all delicious and the environment was a lovely place to catch up with a friend. The service was good too. We had a very good time there.
I have been going to Periyali since it first opened three decades ago. The excellent food, service and ambience have remained consistent through the years. It’s my family’s favorite place to celebrate special occasions.
We had a great meal, best quality ingredients, great service loved it
We’ve been here many times in the past and loved it. This time service was abrupt, our plates whisked away literally mid-bite. My husband’s fish dish was really not good. Sorry to give a less than stellar review.
Our waiter was great and the food was very promising with our starters of dips, octopus and chicken soup. The main courses however certainly underwhelmed. A bland moussaka didn’t excite us and a pretty boring and over cooked sea bass didn’t make me feel good. A walnut cake - which was a very weird choice for the prix fixe- rounded off the meal in a bog standard way. We left feeling “meh” and that it was fine but nothing to make us go back again, which is a shame.
Sophisticated dining for those who like quality food, thoughtfully prepared in a comfortable setting. Pro experience all around. Fish cannot be beat!
I was searching on Yelp for a place conveniently located for two people coming from opposite sides of town. Several places I tried had no reservations left. Finally I happened upon Periyali. It was great! Our waiter was charming. I ordered the fried anchovies special appetizer. Both my guests were kind of lukewarm about the idea. Both helped me polish them off like French fries! I had the branzino too -- grilled, whole. The room was a little dark (very pretty) and I was a little nervous about finding the bones but it was grilled so perfectly that the meat came off in almost perfect filets -- and was moist, tender, and delicious! We had a nice, crisp retsina served perfectly chilled, too. I can't wait to go back. I don't live in NY anymore but my guests did, and weren't aware of the restaurant. On the one hand, I'm glad, because we might not have gotten in. On the other hand, they deserve a crowd every night!
Love, love, loved the place. My wife and I went. We were seated in a nice, comfortable room. Nice ambiance. Our waiter was terrific and helped with my wife’s special food needs. The meal was delicious. We had read the positive reviews and the restaurant met and exceeded our expectations. A truly great experience.
Great food and wine. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Pre-fix was a great value. Lots of healthy food choices.
The last time we were in Periyali was in the early 2000. We frankly had forgotten about it but a friend said she was there recently and it's as good as ever. She was right. Food was very good. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Good for groups. I would definitely be back and recommend it.
A beautiful spot. The seafood is remarkable. The best octopus anywhere.
Periyali continues to be a lovely place to have dinner with people you really like and want to listen to.
I get together with my brother and sister from time to time for a relaxed lunch and conversation. Perfect for that. Good Greek food and friendly and attentive but unobtrusive service.
We are regulars and so appreciative of the food, service and ability to have quiet conversation.
Delightful as it ever was. Top quality Greek and Mediterranean in an elegant, comfortable setting. What better way to learn about Greek wines?
Periyali is a gem of a neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea. The food is authentic Greek with Fresh fish and excellent Horiatiki salad and assortment of Greek appetizers and side dishes. Wine list is reasonable and respectable. In a recent visit I was pleased to find Cava Amethystos on the list at a reasonable price.
This is a well managed restaurant with a superb staff, the decor reminds you of the fun Greek Tavernas in the middle of Manhattan.
Attractive place with good food, good service and big drinks! What could be bad? Highly recommended
Very pleased with everything. They even accommodated families to a separate area to keep the dining atmosphere quiet!
I will go back.
