Greek
A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

Been here many times, and never disappointed. Service and food quality were outstanding as usual. Thus is not an inexpensive place, but the food is simply marvelous. Ask for the back room!

After much research, I chose Periyali for my family birthday dinner. As someone who cares immensely about food and restaurants, I was excited to indulge in fresh, authentic Greek food in a restaurant with such a stellar reputation. While the feta salad, grilled octopus, and spanakopita were wonderful, I was shocked by the poor service. I did not feel welcome at Periyali. I felt rushed and spoken down to by the staff, during an early meal when the restaurant was nearly empty. The staff seemed severely undertrained, often asking to take away plates that were unfinished.

My experience at Periyali was not terrible, but for a meal that was supposed to be special, I was extremely disappointed.

needed a quiet place close to the office where a business discussion/lunch could be had with limited noise, great food and service; Periyali was perfect!

Very pleasant setting, service and atmosphere with enough sound-proofing to be able to hold an intelligent conversation. The food was excellent... all 4 of us are dreaming of two particular appetizers - one with mushrooms, the other with fava beans. Absolutely divine! Thank you for a lovely meal, even if a wee bit expensive.

First of all the food was very good. However the service was horrendous! The server did not know any prices on food or wine. They brought out the appetizers immediately after ordering. The main course came out as soon as we finished the appetizer. The dessert then arrived just as we were finishing the main course thus we told them t take it away. Five minutes later they brought the dessert again and we refused it again. We asked why they were bringing everything out so quickly and the server said they overbooked. At least we received an honest answer. We also had to ask for water several times. We finished the bread and they took away the basket without ever asking if we wanted more bread. The pink room we were in was very nice and again the food was very good, but the service was poor.

Excellent food, service, and quiet atmosphere. Grilled octopus, Greek meatballs, and salmon in phyllo dough were particularly good. We had an early dinner, so it was particularly quiet, but I have been there when the place is packed, and the noise was still not a problem. Very professional wait staff and friendly maître d'.

Periyali is a "classic" of sorts--excellent food (basic in conception but exceptional in the experience of it), professional service, comfortable ambience. Less expensive than many a less-good restaurant. The rabbit, which I had, was especially good.

I have had three birthday dinners here, and the service is always great and the atmosphere always classy. Everyone was impressed with how great the food was. We have been happy patrons of Periyali for decades. As Periyali has consistently mastered the art of simply, yet expertly prepared, ultra fresh and delicious food, it remains one of NYC’s best restaurants. Nestled in a bucolic space off Fifth Avenue, Periyali offers authentic Greek food served by an expert waitstaff. (MAC, the waiter, is an exceptional, accommodating, gracious, attentive and warm star... HE makes a truly good meal absolutely perfect).
The grilled octopus is cooked to perfection with a scrumptious lemony sauce. It is notably delicious! The Greek salad and predominantly vegetarian Greek dips offered as appetizers are fresh and so tasty. The kebabs (chicken or filet mignon), moussaka, and lamb chops are all so very good. The composed entrees are accompanied by a vegetable (string beans, horta) and potato etc., all very well prepared. The fish options are so fresh and simply, yet expertly, prepared. Leave room for a robust cup of Greek coffee to end your lovely dining experience.
Whether you are a meat lover, pescatarian, or vegetarian, Periyali’s offerings will meet your dietary preferences with delectable and fresh options. Periyali is a fantastic restaurant and should be on your NYC restaurant bucket list.

We went for Restaurant Week. The food was delicious, the waitress was pleasant and efficient and the atmosphere was charming. What took away from the experience was the hovering bus boys. They seemed to check each table every two to three minutes, which made it very annoying to have them hovering over us. We had cocktails before dinner, three courses and coffee. We were there for one hour. The "move 'em in and move 'em out" treatment was unnecessary.

Wonderful food, ambiance and service. Their meaty baby lamb chops and the incredibly tender octopus so flavorfully seasoned, keep customers coming back again and again. My son and I visited during NYC Restaurant Week and the special RW dinner menu includes both of the above specialties (appetizer, main and dessert) for $42 pp (the cost of the lamb chop entree on the regular dinner menu). Not to be missed!
