A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

Periyali Ratings and Reviews
There are both more upscale and more low cost old school options, but, IMHO, this still offers a very good overall value proposition (food quality, fair though not cheap pricing, service, bar, ambience) for Greek food in Manhattan. Two other points about Periyali: the staff and service are great; and the menu is stronger on meat offerings than fin fish (unlike some other Greek places).
Glad we went for Restaurant week, as it is rather expensive. My friend and I enjoyed it very much. Only negative comments are I couldn’t see a wine list by the glass, so didn’t know what the cost of the glass of wine was and the octopus appetizer was quite small.
Lovely atmosphere, good food with excellent portions. This was a great place to take my client who thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The service was very caring and nice .When we couldn't stay for dessert they packed it up for us to take home and again, were very generous!
We loved it. Three of us had dinner. We had not been to Periyali in several years and could not imagine why. Food was wonderful, service was perfect, tables were spread sufficiently far apart that we could have a private conversation. We will all go back again soon.
When a restaurant treats all their clients the same during Restaurant Week, they are tops.... but when the food is absolutely outstanding they get 5 stars. Everyone in our group was so impressed. Thanks for 30 years and to 30 more. It is as fresh as the day you opened.
Periyali has been around for 30 years, and I've been going there regularly for close to that many years. It is that rare restaurant that is for grownups, with a reliable menu that has not changed -- and in a good way. There are always fish specials, depending on what's available that day, and the fish is simply prepared in a way that brings out its flavor without masking it. The main menu has superbly prepared Greek specialties like moussaka and lamb chops that you want again and again. We shared several appetizers among my group -- Greek spreads, calamari salad, spanakopita, and the excellent octopus) followed by three of their wonderful desserts (orange cake, walnut cake, and nut cookies). We didn't have wine at lunch, but when I've been there for dinner I am always happy with the wine suggestions.
Server was personable, chatty, said,”yes”to everything & delivered 4 orders with errors on each plate. Proceeded to deny conversation. @ 6:30, restaurant opens 5:30 they were out of Bronzino. 3 of us substituted Bronzino with Black Bass, all 3 orders were bone dry, Lamb Shank preordered dry arrived wet with sauce all over it. Nice people, nice restaurant, except——-if not wanting to ruin birthday celebration, It would have been addressed in Manager’s office.
I had an early dinner here as I had an early evening appointment in the neighborhood. The restaurant has a fairly standard greek look. I was dining alone but the staff made sure that I didn't feel lonely. They were very solicitous and friendly. I had a fairly standard greek meal of lemon chicken soup and grilled fish. Both were really outstanding. The soup was lemony, chickeny and super velvety. It was a wonderful avgelemono. The branzino fillet was equally wonderful. The fish was grilled to perfection and served simply with lemon. Because the fish was cooked just right it needed nothing more than lemon. The side of ragu of grilled eggplant was very tasty as was the rice. While I went to this restaurant because it was in the neighborhood, I would travel down to this area to eat at this restaurant because of the excellent food and service.
Periyali continues to serve excellent food. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The service is superb. I highly recommend when you dine the grilled octopus (one of the best prepared that I ever eaten), the Hen of The Woods mushrooms (exceptional) and the lamb chops (some of the best ever tasted.) 5 stars.
Have been to Periyali before and, since this was with friends I hadn't seen for months, choosing a relatively quiet place was essential. The "vibes" here are warm and welcoming, the food very good. Though the prix fixe menu didn't apply because it was a holiday, we had an excellent meal. The staff is especially helpful, pleasant, courteous.
