A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

The food and service are always excellent. You have to try to Octopus, it is amazing. This time we also had the scallop special and it was delicious as well. I can not say enough good things about Periyali. Just go try it, you will not be disappointed.

After 30 years, Periyali is still as good as it always has always been. After traveling to Greece it is clear that the food is authentic and delicious. You can't go wrong here.

As an Astoria native and half-Greek person, I was shocked to find Greek food this good in Manhattan. The salmon and spinach baked in phyllo dough was unreal. Great ambiance, great service, will return.

Our first try on this restaurant and its easy to locate. The food that they all serve taste good and the server Alex was very friendly. We’ll definitely recommend Periyali to all of my friends and family.

There are both more upscale and more low cost old school options, but, IMHO, this still offers a very good overall value proposition (food quality, fair though not cheap pricing, service, bar, ambience) for Greek food in Manhattan. Two other points about Periyali: the staff and service are great; and the menu is stronger on meat offerings than fin fish (unlike some other Greek places).

Glad we went for Restaurant week, as it is rather expensive. My friend and I enjoyed it very much. Only negative comments are I couldn’t see a wine list by the glass, so didn’t know what the cost of the glass of wine was and the octopus appetizer was quite small.

Horrible experience. Had to send back my salmon 4 times and the owner of the restaurant proceeded to yell at me instead of trying to get his kitchen to make the salmon as requested from the menu. They even left it on the bill! Will never return.
