A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

Periyali Ratings and Reviews
Periyali continues to serve excellent food. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The service is superb. I highly recommend when you dine the grilled octopus (one of the best prepared that I ever eaten), the Hen of The Woods mushrooms (exceptional) and the lamb chops (some of the best ever tasted.) 5 stars.
Have been to Periyali before and, since this was with friends I hadn't seen for months, choosing a relatively quiet place was essential. The "vibes" here are warm and welcoming, the food very good. Though the prix fixe menu didn't apply because it was a holiday, we had an excellent meal. The staff is especially helpful, pleasant, courteous.
This restaurant is great overall. The food was fantastic, as was the wine. Very attentive service. Beautiful, cozy white interior. Very attentive staff.
We ordered mousaka, Greek baked chicken with roasted potatoes, a scallop special, and the Greek appetizer plate of mini spanikopita and cheese filled phyllo. We also had rice pudding and baklava for dessert.
Portions were very generous and the food was fantastic. Very traditional Greek. Try It. You won’t be disappointed!
We have eaten a Periyali at least half a dozen times and have never been disappointed. The octopus is the best, I think it's their signature dish. The fish always tastes so fresh. I hope to continue eating at Periyali for an everyday meal or for a special occasion.
Periyali is a charming Mediterranean restaurant on W 20th between 5th and 6th Avenues. Service is excellent. I did not try their prix fixe, though in retrospect it would have been more economical. My guest and I shared a Greek salad and each had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, lentil soup, and their superb lamb chop plate with three huge meaty chops, potatoes and string beans or grilled asparagus. It was delicious. The bill with tax, exclusive of tip, came to $168.
Periyali is a neighborhood gem in the highly competitive Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Cuisine is well prepared authentic everyday simple Greek food: Horiatiki Salad, Lentil Soup, Broiled Baby Octopus, Lamb Kabob, Baklava, etc....Service is superb at every level, particularly the general manager, who seems to know every regular custmer’s preference.
For me, going to Periyali is like going home. I like it a lot.
Everyone in our party of 6 loved their food. The octopus and beet appetizers were outstanding as was the cobia, a delicious white fish served as a special. I would also recommend Periyali for its very agreeable ambiance and excellent service. It's always a pleasure to dine at this 30 year old Greek favorite.
I have been dining at Periyali for many years, and it is always wonderful. The grilled octopus may be the best anywhere! Everything on the menu is special, but my personal favorite is the whole grilled branzino. The selection of Greek wines is excellent, be sure to ask your server for a wine suggestion, you will not be disappointed.
We googled a Greek restaurant near our downtown hotel and Periyali came up top of the list. The food and atmosphere were both great. The fare is quite expensive but well produced and they kept the water and bread basket topped up throughout the meal. My only issue was being given the bill immediately after dessert as, to me, this is restaurant code for ‘pay up and p*** off’. Generally though, a really good experience.
The ambience and the service of this restaurant was very good.
Not impressed with the food.
The calamari was awesome, my son had salmon that was pretty good.
I have a lamb shank which was OK I have no idea what it was over but it was a puddle of water, it was terrible. I’m pretty sure it was orzo but it was swimming in a puddle of water and it was extremely overcooked.
My husband’s meal looked pretty good except for his green beans were so grossly over cooked they look like they were canned green beans. For this type of restaurant at this price it was on acceptable.
