About Periyali

A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

Periyali is a neighborhood gem in the highly competitive Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Cuisine is well prepared authentic everyday simple Greek food: Horiatiki Salad, Lentil Soup, Broiled Baby Octopus, Lamb Kabob, Baklava, etc....Service is superb at every level, particularly the general manager, who seems to know every regular custmer’s preference.

For me, going to Periyali is like going home. I like it a lot.

Nobody makes Oktapodi Sharas (octopus) like they do here. The lamb chops with garlic beets is outstanding, but at $56 has become a bit too pricey for four chops. Other than that one of my favorite neighborhood places.

We used to dine here regularly when we lived in Manhattan 28 years ago. Back then it was an excellent place to bring business associates and friends. Very happy that what we remembered still holds true.

Everyone in our party of 6 loved their food. The octopus and beet appetizers were outstanding as was the cobia, a delicious white fish served as a special. I would also recommend Periyali for its very agreeable ambiance and excellent service. It's always a pleasure to dine at this 30 year old Greek favorite.

I have been dining at Periyali for many years, and it is always wonderful. The grilled octopus may be the best anywhere! Everything on the menu is special, but my personal favorite is the whole grilled branzino. The selection of Greek wines is excellent, be sure to ask your server for a wine suggestion, you will not be disappointed.

I have been dining at this restaurant for 25 years and always have a positive experience. The marinated grilled octopus is the absolutely the best. It is worth a visit simply for the octopus. That said, every dish has been enjoyable. It is reliable good!

Food pricey -- wrong order was brought to one of our party and they said they'd skip the main course rather than delay everyone else. -- chef rushed to make the dish quickly and served it. Waiter was at fault and not terribly apologetic!

We googled a Greek restaurant near our downtown hotel and Periyali came up top of the list. The food and atmosphere were both great. The fare is quite expensive but well produced and they kept the water and bread basket topped up throughout the meal. My only issue was being given the bill immediately after dessert as, to me, this is restaurant code for ‘pay up and p*** off’. Generally though, a really good experience.

How does a Greek restaurant run out of Bronzino and then to tell us they have scallops as a special and then they ran out of that as well. Ended up having salmon which was very fishy. The staff was all over of us to the point where we felt rushed.

The ambience and the service of this restaurant was very good.
Not impressed with the food.
The calamari was awesome, my son had salmon that was pretty good.
I have a lamb shank which was OK I have no idea what it was over but it was a puddle of water, it was terrible. I’m pretty sure it was orzo but it was swimming in a puddle of water and it was extremely overcooked.
My husband’s meal looked pretty good except for his green beans were so grossly over cooked they look like they were canned green beans. For this type of restaurant at this price it was on acceptable.

I love the meatballs and the roasted potatoes. But on my last visit the service was slow and the noise level through the roof (on a Thursday night). My chicken (delicious on a previous visit) was just average.

I needed a quiet, uplifted spot for an intimate business lunch. This fit the bill. I marked "comfort food" because nothing is more comforting that Greek Lemon Soup. Theirs was exemplary, as was my perfectly cooked Mediterranean snapper. Our server was charming and attentive. I hear dinner is more noisy, but Periyali is apparently a long-time lunch favorite for publishing professionals. I can see why.

We came here for an early meal before a concert. Some of my party arrived early while I was stuck in traffic, the staff was great about letting the first to arrive sit and order drinks while I was en route. We got the price fixed dinner in addition to some other appetizers and everything was delicious and so fresh. The octopus and lavraki were cooked perfectly. The salad and dips were all super fresh and beautifully prepared. The service was excellent. We will be coming back!

Not what it used to be.

The pros:
-Food is pretty good, especially the octopus, greek salad, meatballs.
-The lighting is lovely.
-Wonderful to have white tablecloths, a rarity these days due to trendy restaurants going for more casual vibe and also cost cutting.
-Excellent acoustics...we could have a nice conversation without shouting.
-Servers were professional and know the menu. Accommodating to special requests.

The cons:
-The flower arrangements had dead and wilted roses.
-Bus boy kept clearing food and drinks that were not quite finished (maybe one bite or one sip left, and instead of asking if anyone would like it....the plate was removed). After the third time this happened, we complained and they did bring a complimentary cocktail since my husband's martini was taken away prematurely.
-Feels like a has-been instead of a good old reliable place.
-Wine list has limited selection
-My whole fish, usually amazing in Greek restaurants, was very bony and the skin was not crisp.

Overall it feels like its way past its prime and sadly I would not return.

A restaurant of this caliber should heat the bread and offer Pita and authentic Greek Bread for the table. Our first basket was individual pieces of all white bread and unacceptable. We then asked for basket of whole wheat bread that would have been much better had it not had a burned crust. Too bad because the rest of the meal was delicious.

From the family that built the amazing Il Cantinori, Periyali is a stalwart that has survived the test of time. I hadn't been there in 25 years. The Greek food is authentic and still great. Our waitress was amazing. We were there pre-theatre so it was relatively quiet. All in all, a good meal.

Absolutely the best Greek restaurant in NYC and going strong. So much excellent food, I don't know where to begin. From the array of appetizers to the mix of fish, fowl and veggies this is numero uno. And Greek wine! And tres excellent family hospitality. We had ten people in our party, mostly from out of town, and they left elated. Excellent hosts.

The food was good though my girlfriend ordered the meatballs and they were a little dry. I also had the shrimp and they turned out to be good but a little well done.

Two things that actually irked me were that the bus boys were VERY aggressive. Constantly they were coming up to use asking if we were done with our plates in an aggressive tone as if they wanted to rush us out the door for the next table to come in. Mind you the place was 3/4 empty while we were there so it wasn't as if we were taking our time and most of the times they asked us to take our plates away we were clearly still eating as there was still food ON THE PLATE.

Secondly, which I didn't personally like, was that the waitress just gave us our check randomly even though we hadn't even finished our dessert or even asked for it. Another sign they were trying to rush us out. I felt that to be incredibly rude and to make a point I took my girlfriend here on a date so I assure you we didn't do anything out of the ordinary for them to treat us this way.

Regardless, I'll go somewhere else where I don't feel rushed to eat my food when I'm trying to be on a romantic date.
