A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers. The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and up scaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative béchamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.

The food is always excellent and consistent. The service is impeccable, friendly yet professional. The ambience is great.... it feels like you are far from the traffic of 20th Street. The maitre' d, Aldo was friendly and very helpful. Our wait person, Eleni, was terrific and helped us navigate the menu. Greek food at its best.

Periyali is a NYC classic—amazing food, top-notch service, and special touches, such as fresh flowers on each table. It’s elegant without being stuffy in any way. I’ve used it for dates, for business dinners, and for our-of-town friends. It always impresses my guests. I also love the eclectic and interesting crowd it attracts. A true NYC gem.

The food and ambiance was beautiful as always . The service was not . She barely came by . The woman that took over for her at the end was lovely. So was the first server , she just wasn’t present for added drinks , ordering … I’m sorry to say this . I never do but the amount of times I needed to look for service and just had to wait until she was there. I was entertaining one of the guests and when she arrived I wanted her to be able to order a drink . Finally came by and then forgot it for quite some time until I reminded her .. Otherwise it’s a wonderful restaurant.

We shared the spanikopeta appetizer. It was a large portion and delicious. For entrees we had the salmon special and the lamb chops. Both were great. Shared a diples for dessert. Very fresh and yummy.

Slightly disappoointed this time. I've been coming to Periyali for almost 30 years, and during all those visits delighted in the grilled octopus -- the best I've encountered. Learned at my previous visit that same chef, same recipe. Not yesterday. Not the same. Sauce was bland, it was grilled properly. Bring back the chef and the recipe, please!

I have been going to Periyali since it first opened in the late 1980's. It remains a NYC classic with truly excellent food and outstanding service. Whether I go solo or with a group of friends, it's always a great experience. The couple seated next to me raved about the lamb chops--"the best ever." The couple on the other side loved moussaka, which I will have on my next visit. The fresh flowers on each table is a nice touch.

Room lovely with flowers and lighting. However; however slight issues emerged. 1: bread plates removed but then bread brought to table? 2. One entree description noted fennel as part of the dish/preparation but 3 one inch squares of a leaf does not equate to fair menu mention. To be sure: food very tasty, well cooked and our server was delightful and knowledgeable. By all means..eat here!

We have dined here a number of times. The food is always good and nicely presented. The tables are adequately spaced. Our waiter was friendly without being too chummy, and offered us an appetizer after someone mixed up one order. We will certainly return.

I recommend the oyster mushroom and sauteed greens appetizer, as well as the walnut cake. The moussaka seemed dry and there wasn't enough bechamel sauce for my taste. Delicious retsina. The service was absentminded and uncoordinated. I always had to look to get someone's attention, and then different staff members would come over to respond to the same question. I am fond of this restaurant and it used to be better. Maybe it will be in the future.

We used to love this place. This time we brought friends who we knew would also enjoy it. Big disappointment. The service was good, but the food was very mediocre. While we appreciated the ambiance and quiet atmosphere in which to talk, we will not return.
