About Pentimento Restaurant
Pentimento, inspired by the spirit of mother-nature, reflects the seasonal progression by creating seasonal menus conceived by owner Dennis Young and Chef Chelsea Taylor. Like the seasons, each menu is merely a layer on the culinary canvas they have been painting on for more than thirty years.
Like all Italian fare, the soul of each dish is derived from the region and embodied by the finest imported and local, natural and organic ingredients and animated with passion in the hands that prepare them. Using minimal and high quality ingredients and showcasing their flavors is one of our philosophies at Pentimento. Our wine program is extensive, yet simple. Every palette is different. Our beverage director David Marzano will ensure each sip will be a memorable one. The food at Pentimento is creative, often remarkable. The range of dishes, both small and large plates, will satisfy the most diverse tastes as well as limitations. Vegetarian, gluten free, meat and fish eaters... everyone will have numerous options to choose from! At our dinner last night, our group of three shared two appetizers: the Panelle, fried chick pea discs that were intoxicating, and a respectable pate. Two in our party had the seasonal bay scallop dishes, which were wonderful... definitely try them if they're on the menu. The bay scallops are delicate, almost as sweet as candy! The third person had the salmon from the regular menu, which is always reliable. At dessert, a pear bread pudding was good, though no one could detect any pear in it. The atmosphere is fine... livelier if you're near the bar area, but not crazy. Service is alway reliable.
The food is consistently delicious. Eat in the restaurant when you come here. The bar is not a good scene. There is a fairly young bartender there that has been there for some time. He likes to put his hands on the other bar maids in front of the customers! Can you imagine, in this day and age. Hello Harvey Weinstein !!!We wrote in to complain about him and he denied what everyone sees him do right in front of everyone. He also is famous for changing your favorite game if he simply feels like it with no warning.
This is a great restaurant and we should frequent it more .
Last night we went all American and both my wife and myself went with burgers !! She had the vegetarian burger which unfortunately she didn't like and left. They did offer to switch it for something else but she declined . My burger however was very good ! Well cooked and full of flavor . Not sure about Burgers on Ciabatta bread ! Call me old fashioned , but it was a great burger .
Our waiter was friendly and polite - no complaints about this restaurant, been here many times and always consistent.
Highly recommend this restaurant. Food was delicious and well prepared. I didn't notice that the dish I ordered contained chili powder and was quite spicy. My fault. They were more than willing to get me another dish and, while I was waiting, even brought me a complimentary appetizer. Quite thoughtful. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Good selection and I will definitely return. You can actually have a normal level conversation (we went on a Sunday evening).
Have been a customer for several years , 3 times a year visit.
I had heard negative review from a family member that the food was no longer good. But I had always enjoyed our meals in the past and had to give it a try.
Unfortunately they must have new ownership and the whole experience isn't the same.
Four of us went to dinner here on a Friday evening and all four of us loved everything we ordered - wine, apps, entree and dessert. Two of us are vegetarians and there were many creative dishes to choose from which was wonderful because there still is limited vegetarian dishes to choose from in many restaurants. Even if you were not vegetarian these dishes would appeal to anyone. The waiter was efficient and pleasant but not overbearing. We are still talking about how much we loved it here. Will be back!
We have been here before. This time was not so great. Not much of a selection of red wines by the glass. You would think an Italian restaurant would have a merlot by the glass. The meatball appetizer we got was cold and our server was nowhere to be found. We were very disappointed this time around.
Though I had been to the bar once, this visit was my first for dinner, which was a birthday dinner (for my spouse) that we timed so that we could enjoy a leisurely meal and make a Jazz Loft concert with time to spare. Everything about the meal and evening went beautifully; we were very well cared for by the waiting staff, and the quartet that night killed it. Highly recommend the combination: Pentimento + Jazz Loft.
We had a nice time here. There were a few oddities like the food came out literally about five minutes after we ordered it, WAY too fast. It was clear that the dishes had already been sitting in the kitchen, made. We were also interrupted a LOT by the waiter, the manager, and another service. Very sweet to check in on us but it was just too much. I'd recommend, but not if you're there hoping to have a nice long conversation. Between the food arriving so quickly and the constant check ins, we weren't there long.
We usually eat outside whenever the weather permits and this was no exception. They keep on tweaking and improving the outside dining area. It has the feel of an English Garden. Very picturesque and quiet. The food and service were excellent. Nice menu and wine list and everything was well prepared. Three of us had pasta dishes and the sauce was excellent and a little spicy which we all enjoyed. All in all an excellent dining experience highly recommended.
My husband and I had a delicious brunch outside. My husband enjoyed the Lobster Hash browns which were cooked to perfection with the poached eggs. So yummy! I ordered the Shrimp & Grits, another tasty choice with the salty deliciousness of tasso ham, cheese and a fantastic sauce. We both also had their spicy Bloody Mary, which was out of this world. In addition, the service was spot on. We will definitely be back!
We've been late to the table, so to speak, at Pentimento in Stony Brook since new Chef de Cuisine Chelsea Taylor has taken over the kitchen. We were encouraged by the eclectic new menu that featured some of our favorite apps such as marinated gigante beans, grilled artichokes and panelle (fried chick pea fritters). Specials this past Sunday included Fiori di Zucca (stuffed zucchini flowers) and organic local Nettle Gnudi (a kind of ravioli stuffing absent the pasta encasement) in a prosciutto ragu. We opted for the specials. The flowers consisted of three smallish specimens, crisply battered and fried and doused with a tasty basil pesto. But the ricotta stuffing was absent any character from added herbs or seasoning. Disappointing. Conversely, the gnudi were rather large and plentiful. But cutting into them with our fork, these plump green-specked pillows were tough and somewhat gelatinous, as though they spent too much time in a water boil or overworked ricotta dough resulted in undue toughening. There was nothing delicate--as good gnudi should be--about them and they were utterly lacking in nettle flavor or any flavor for that matter. The prosciutto ragu was at once oily and way over salted and lacked the consistency of a proper ragu. A dousing of grated Parmigiano Reggiano helped, but the chewy character of the gnudi could not be overcome. There is much more on Ms. Taylor's menu to explore, and we plan a trip back. We just hope the execution fares better than the promise upon our return.
A Big Disappointment. We were at Pentimento because we were going to a concert at The Jazz Loft which is nearby and the restaurant has very positive reviews. The restaurant is attractive. First minor problem: we asked for a soda that was on the menu, but they didn't have it. We ordered, and the waiter asked if we'd like some bread. We said yes. Twenty minutes later, still no bread. We asked about it and were told it's in the oven. 15 minutes later, the waiter arrived with 3 slices of a small, narrow Italian bread, one slice for each of us. It was cold, stale, and inedible--perhaps in the oven 2 days ago. I ordered tricolor salad with grilled salmon on it, a specific choice on the menu. Instead, I got an appetizer salad with no salmon. Orders got corrected, so what about the food?: it was good. My salad came with the salmon grilled just the way I had asked for it; pork chop was good; lobster risotto was good. My ultimate review question: would I go back? No. Hard to make up for such an unprofessional (and seemingly untruthful) beginning when there are so many other restaurants to choose from.
I was looking forward to trying Pentimento. However, my excitement was short lived. I ordered a simple parmesan and pepper pasta. What I received was a heavily cream laden pasta dish that was inedible. My husband ordered mussels with a white wine sauce for an appetizer, and received a red sauce.
Delicious food and wait staff could not have been better. We had made a rather late reservation and were initially seated near bar area which was a little too loud for conversation. Staff was able to move us to a table in the other room by a window which was much quieter and we will make that request in the reservation next time when we are there by ourselves. Will def come again.

The garlic scape soup and panelle were the perfect start. Goat cheese ravioli and squid ink pasta cooked perfectly al dente. Mussels and chilis with the squid ink pasta were the perfect combination of briny and spicy. Will definitely be back soon!
