Penne Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Well, Chef was accommodating, allowed a switch of fettuccine with lemon risotto. Waitress forgot our appetizer. Slow despite only 1-2 others in restaurant. Ok for a hotel restaurant but wouldn't be my choice for dinner out. Worked out to be convenient before a nearby concert and we were staying at the hotel.
Though conveniently located next to the Penn campus, this restaurant fails in almost every regard. The food was essentially Olive Garden food at fine dining prices. Understaffing left the service slow and inattentive (though certainly friendly). Paint was peeling off the walls next to our table and the bathrooms were disgusting. If you are staying at the hotel and want a nightcap in the bar, this would probably be fine. Otherwise, avoid this one. It's probably the single worst value in University City.
The food comes out fast but service was very slow. The taste of food was good but not worth the Monday. Sides were $8 and we received 4 asparagus stems - ridiculous!
Ice tea is from a mix! Yuck! McDonalds has fresh brewed .
It's typical hotel food / was disappointed based on reviews I read.
The portions were very small for the high prices and my steak was way overdone. The waiter never came to check to see how the food was or how my steak was done. When we finally flagged him down they took the steak back to redo ( at MR). By the time it was returned, my dinner companions were finished. My squash and "crisp" brussel sprouts were cold and soggy. No manager came by to apologize or offer to comp a drink or dessert. Won't dine there again.
There were plenty of available tables during our early Monday night dinner; this restaurant is more attractive than that statistic might suggest. Interesting wine list, but nothing noteworthy in the draft beers. The mushroom bruschetta was excellent; the scallops entrée was a bit meagre (three scallops).
Everything about our dinner was great. The chef and server took great care that I got exclusively gluten free pasta. It was boiled in a separate pot from my husband's. He had a bolognese pasta. The Nutella cake was superb. We always enjoy our dinner at Penne.
There were three in my party and our reservation was at 12:30. The service was dreadfully slow. We wound up leaving the restaurant at 2:20. The restaurant was not busy so I am not sure why it took nearly 1 hour to get us our entrees. But they were very quick about giving us the check. Not sure I can really recommend this place if people want to go there for lunch as it seems you need an afternoon to accommodate their service.
The food, the decor and the service were all wonderful backgrounds to a night with our family. We were off to see a show across the street at the Annenberg Center and the location is IDEAL. I wish I remembered the hostess's name. She really ran the room beautifully on Friday night 12/9. Well done.
Outstanding food, wine, service, and ambience! An + all around! I took my brother and mother here as a surprise birthday celebration for my brother. Our waiter was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful in making it a special evening for my brother. An excellent evening was had by all! We'll definitely be returning again soon. And we hope o have the same waiter! He deserves a raise! :)
I had the calamari (very good), the Caesar salad (terrible very bland--had almost no dressing) and the maple rib eye (which came out almost cold). All in all the food was ok. What was more unfortunate was the service. The older gentlemen (white male with glasses) who served myself and my colleague was God awful. He had zero warmth. His attitude was one negative step away from being outright "not wanting us there". For example, my colleague asked for the caesar salad WITHOUT croutons, the salad comes with one large crouton. The server brought it out and basically said, "I know you asked for no croutons, but you can just remove it yourself." And this was basically par for the course, for the entire meal. I don't know if that server was having a bad day, but he was AWFUL. Apathetic and extremely not interested. It wasn't like there were lots of ppl there and he was stressed because he was "in the weeds", he just didn't care really. Thankfully, my colleague was kind enough to pay for my meal---if I would have paid, I would have left zero tip.
While the location is desirable, the value is less that steller. Fifty dollars for two appetizers and a glass of wine is hardly good value.
The wait staff was lovely and very knowledgeable about the menu.
Probably would not come back if other restaurants were available. Better value and amibience is certainly around university city.
Food was good. Octopus was grilled to the point of very crispy we had to return it - rest of our meal was very tasty.
Waiter was a bit weeded, which made getting another glass of wine or even our check a longer process. Not that big of a deal but certainly you'd expect better. Would return for another try!
We were more than pleasantly surprised. The service was perfection. Our waitstaff person, Virginia Brown, did an amazing job of pairing our food selections with wines - delicious wines that we wine enthusiasts were not familiar with and enjoyed immensely. The sous chef came to our table after our meal . He was charming and willing to talk about the prep of the wonderful creative meals we had just consumed - one steak - one salmon dish. Nothing negative to say except perhaps for the noise level. A gem for oenophiles and foodies alike!
Used Penne Restaurant for a business dinner last week. We arrived early and need a place to work. The bartender was most accommodating and gracious. He went out of his way to welcome our group. The food at dinner was good and the service top notch. Overall we had a very good experience and would return.
We four friends had lunch. service was prompt and unobtrusive. Food average to good, quantity average to too much per serving. Noise moderate., Good wine list though not comprehensive. Desserts interesting; one (limoncello +berries) was a surprise. Limoncello is usually a very lemon-y liquid. This was an ice cream and not that lemon-y. Good but should be more clearly listed for what it is.
We enjoy Penne as a warm and welcoming venue for our reunions.
Our server was very patient. We had a big group and took a while to place our order but our server didn't rush us. The food was delicious and they had great vegetarian options. I had the lemon curd tart for dessert, which was perfect: not too sweet/tart and a perfect portion.
