Pelons Tex-Mex Ratings and Reviews
Went here with a large group from work, only because Stubbs across the street doesn't take reservations and was an hour wait. Awful experience. Cold food which took an hour to come out ...should have just waited at Stubbs. Food quality was poor as was the service.
The frozen House margaritas were great, no complaint there. We ordered the tacos and the "corn" tortilla was a crispy taco shell like the kind bought in a box at a grocery store. The flour tortilla was also sub-par, from a bag most likely, and it got soggy really quick. I'm not knocking flour tortillas from a bag but there are way better quality ones out there than the ones used. The guacamole was good, the chips and salsa were good too.
All in all, great location if you want to grab some food and drinks before a show at Stubb's but it would not be my go-to for Tex-Mex.
Quiet early evening so it wasn't busy. Sat outside and the weather was perfect.Had 3 tacos: Carnitas, Chicken and Spicy Shrimp. They were some of the best tacos I've had. First time trying Shrimp tacos and they were yummy. The house margaritas were great! Definitely worth another visit when back in town
Open table reservation was well received and hosts were welcoming and friendly. We were seated right away. There was a delay for our first visit from our waiter which was quickly resolved after asking the hostess of our wait. Food was great, esp the guac ( bigger portions for price would be better), roasted corn sides. Pork tacos and cheese enchiladas were fine. Atmosphere was great w/umbrellas and fan misters on the patio! Waiter, Johnny, was helpful and pleasant
This used to be our go-to before a concert at Stubbs but never again :-( They've changed to a limited concert menu which I totally understand being across from a popular music venue but, if you're going to limit the menu, the food and service should be fast and friendly. It was neither. Upon first arriving, the manager unnecessarily corrected how my spouse asked for the reservations. It was empty...maybe because of his completely unwelcoming attitude. Fast forward to dinner and drinks. The waitress was pleasant enough (anyone would have been after the first impression with the manager). We ordered our dinner and meal...then waited and waited. My flour tortillas were forgotten 4 times. The queso was cold, the entrees were barely edible (my cheese enchiladas were quite obviously velveeta). Our food was originally given to the wrong table and they ate about 1/3 before they and the waitress realized it was the wrong order. Overhearing this, I assumed our replaced entrees would be out quickly. Nope. Fast forward another 45!!! Minutes and, upon asking about our food, the waitress made up an excuse the the computers were broken even though we overheard what actually happened..honesty goes a long way. We finally received our meals and I ate about 1/2...it was so bad :-(. The waitress then spilled a beer on my spouse (at least that was comped) and upon paying ended her service to us by asking if we were going to that night's show and when we responded yes, she just walked away and muttered "must be nice, wish I could go." What?!? As we left, the manager and waitress were arguing in front of other patrons. I'm not sure if these folks are under new management or what happened but, with all the amazing options in Austin, we certainly won't be back.
Cool deck, decor and great pre music downtown location, but otherwise this place does not seem to try too hard. We went for dinner before a Saturday pm show at the Mohawk. Seems to cater to tourists and bachelor parties. The food was so- so. The service was so-so. No glaring misses, but Austin has so many other A+ places.
Not pleasant. Poor service. Ordered queso as appetizer, but entree came out sans queso. Queso eventually came out maybe halfway through entree. Food quality poor & cheap quality red wine. Had to ask for every thing--drinks, chips, salsa, straws, lines, check, etc. Rarely saw server. Pleasant patio, but just cannot recommend this place. Sorry.
But for some bizarre factors, I would have given this a glowing review. The food that I had (pork green chile enchiladas, plus very good chips and two types of salsa) was excellent, and was delivered quickly. BUT. First, I made my reservation through OT, and when I arrived, the restaurant said that they had cancelled my reservation because they were "too busy." There were a number of open tables outside (on the beautiful night) plus nearly all inside tables were empty. When I persisted, since I had just walked a 1/2 mile there from my hotel, they initially said there was an hour wait, and that it would also take at least 30 minutes to be served (food came in 10 minutes). There was NO LINE and many empty tables. I basically looked around, said "seriously"? And they seated me inside, but wouldn't give me one of the empty outdoor tables on the terrace/patio. Through my entire meal, the other inside tables remained empty. There were still empty tables outside too when I left (and I never did see any waiting line). I was a single woman, dining alone while on business. I don't know if that was a factor in the treatment. But while the food was great, it is disarming to have the reservation cancelled and then be treated this way. PS. After I got back to my hotel, I did see an email (sent after I arrived at the restaurant) cancelling the reservation.
The food was alright. We ordered chicken fajitas and the chicken was pretty dried out. Chips and salsa were good. The waiter was extremely unprofessional and was swearing to be funny when he took our order. He then proceeded to take an extensively long time to bring us our drinks that we ordered. At the end of the meal we asked that he split our bill for the five of us. He over charged us for the pitchers of margaritas we ordered. We tried to talk to him about it and he said we needed to figure it out amongst ourselves. Would not go back.
Pelons is located in a slightly rougher area of downtown Austin, so if you are walking there, it's probably better to go during daylight hours. That being said, the restaurant was clean and comfortable, and the service was excellent. My chicken fajita tacos were very good. My husband raved about the shrimp tacos with pineapple. He loved them. The nachos were also good. Also, you definitely got your money's worth. We would definitely go there again on a trip to Austin.
The waiter had been working only 2 days and obviously was not trained yet; this is a management problem, not the employee. While he was personable, every order in our foursome was incorrect. It took a long time to get water, drinks and food. It was not busy when we got there.
