Pelago is a wonderful Italian restaurant just off Michigan Avenue in the Rafael Hotel. The restaurant is small but beautiful, the food is excellent, and the service is outstanding. The pastas are homemade, the food is authentic, and the chef is always there. It is a place for grownups. We are so glad we found it.
This is just an exceptional, authentic Italian restaurant. The Chef offers also Gluten-free menu with same taste of regular one!
Some people refuse to eat in hotel restaurants, but this spot is the rare exception. Although the restaurant is a little hard to find, it is worth the visit. In reality, it's just two blocks east of the Hancock, and the attention to detail is perfect. It was our first visit, but will not be our last. We are looking forward to warmer weather when we can sit outside.
Birthday dinner - service was great and the food was amazing! Very attentive staff and we never waited for a thing. All courses were timed perfectly. Our after dinner coffees were not as hot as we would have liked them to be but were offered to have them redone. We will be back. Loved the experience.
Our favorite Italian when visiting Chicago.
Amazing food, ambience and service!
Excellent service by owner and staff.
Somewhat pricey for drinks and daily special.
The chef, Mauro Mafrici, is amazing. And such a generous warm person as well. How his staff could be so cold and condescending is beyond me. At one point, one of my dinner companions had gotten warm and put her sweater over the back of the chair. A hostess came over and asked if she could put the sweater on the side stool provided. I know they want to create an aesthetic that is pleasing to all patrons, but they made this particular patron very uncomfortable. The used-car-salesman up-sell tactics used by our server were beyond annoying. We aren't poor. It's not that we couldn't afford a 4 or 5 course meal....we just weren't that hungry. This was the line: "Ah! Wonderful choice. But may I suggest you order 2 as one is not enough for the table?" It was slick and frankly beneath the establishment.
Our second time there. The food is fantastic and the service is very good and very professional. Both times were long evenings so do not plan a one hour dinner.
One of the BEST family meals we've ever had! Our waiter, Alfredo, made us feel so comfortable and was the BEST EVER!!!
Wonderful cooking in service, always a great experience
AMAZING SERVICE & food
Great spot. Please note: the only reason I rated the "noise level" as energetic is because they had a woman playing the harp for entertainment, which was actually very nice. How ever, we where seated right next to the harp player and it was a little to loud for us, kind of hard to carry on with our conversation. I'm sure that had we been seated a little further away from the harp player we would not have had this issue.
The chef offered to create a menu for us and It was like he read our minds. An amazing experience!
Great Valentines Day dinner! Excellent food!!:)
Prices a bit high-$14 for soup...kinda high:(
This is without any doubt the best Italian restaurant in Chicago. A mix of authenticity, great ingredients and originality. I am an extremely critical Italian-born costumer and Pelago simply went over my expectations!
Another awesome experience. The chef made us branzino although it wasn’t on the menu. In my opinion it’s the 1st or second best upscale Italian restaurant in the city. Riccardo would be the only other restaurant in my opinion in the same league.
Every meal I’ve had at Pelago has been amazing! Their black truffle pasta is the best I’ve ever had and their fish is always superb. The ambiance is elegant but comfortable. It’s the perfect date spot!
Elegant spot with great service.
Quite the place that celebrate a birthday
Business meal with a customer. Our party ended up going from a 4 top to a deuce due to the flu. Service started out great but staff directed their attention to larger parties that came in after us. Even though i opened with a very nice bottle of wine and would have spent more on a second bottle we had to wait over 30 minutes after asking for the wine list again before anyone came back to ask if we found anything. Food was good but not over the top but the service made us expendable. Tried it once but will not be back for a second visit.
Wonderful food and outstanding service in a beautiful environment.
Amazing food and service! Would definitely go back!!
They were very attentive to our special requests for vegetarian options. Service was top notch. We ordered a truffle dish that was expensive, but it was amazing.
Food was delicious - both great taste and great presentation. Our waiter was very knowledgeable on the menu options and made some good recommendations (without being too pushy). We made reservation on short notice - it was close to our hotel. My only comment was that the open table price target of ‘$’ was a bit off base - this is a pricey restaurant and should be rated at least ‘$$’. All-in-all a great dining experience but definitely on the upper end of the price scale for a good Italian restaurant. Would certainly go again.
Outstanding meal! The chef is genius. Best Italian in Chicago.
Pelago was a quiet, romantic setting. The fireplace was burning and only a few other tables were seated in the restaurant. The food was freshly made in house which took a bit longer to make but the wait was definitely worth it. Definitely the place to go for an anniversary or other special occasion.
Excellent pasta. We asked for a wine recommendation, and the waiter suggested an off the menu Chef reserve wine. Turns out this special wine that they suggested at $97 is sold a Binney’s for $13. We also made it clear from the beginning that we had 8:00 theater tickets. We asked for coffee and our check at 7:30. After multiple requests we paid the bill and ran out of the place at 7:55.
A lovely quiet dinner in beautiful surroundings. We had a tasting of four pastas and then Dover sole and lamb chops. The only negative is the $50 corkage to bring a bottle of wine.
Pelago is lovely, the food is delicious, and the service is highly attentive, if perhaps too formal. Be prepared: this is an expensive restaurant and I thought overpriced.
Exceptionally high level gourmet service and dishes. Fantastic experience for myself and my 5 guests.
Amazing authentic 5 star Italian restaurant!! It is pricey? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes. My wife and I went during a special weekend to Chicago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Wait staff was incredibly attentive. Loved it that our waiter spoke Italian - just added to the experience. Bravo!!
Simply one of our finest dining experiences ever. Pelago is Michelin star caliber by any standard. Chef Mauro is a true talent and very kind. The staff is professional and the overall experience is nothing short of world class dining. This is now a regular Chicago stop. Amazing!!
Best Italian food in the city
Be clear about parking costs if you stay beyond 3 hours (for shopping, play, etc.).
Never a more attentive staff! Good choices for. Huge wine list.
Excellent food and service! Highly recommend Pelago. Almost everyone working there has a strong Italian accent, which I think is awesome when you want authentic Italian food. The staff was so attentive. Fresh homemade pasta was delicious. I just cannot stop thinking about this warm salad with radicchio lettuce and thick shaved prosciutto - the best!! Will definitely be back with my husband for a quiet and fabulous dinner. Oh, almost forgot - for the ladies, Pelago has a special touch at the tables with a little stool for your purse. Love this place!
Fuimos a comer a las dos de la tarde en domingo y no había nadi en el lugar. Fuimos la única mesa.
We went to Pelago last Saturday night for our annual Christmas dinner with my college roommate and had a perfect evening. They were a little late in seating us for our 8:30 reservation, but were very apologetic and kept us updated on how long until they could get us seated. Once we sat down I remembered why I booked Pelago for this special evening. The waiter was very helpful, even recommending substitutions to the pasta flight we ordered for our first course. The main courses were perfectly sized and cooked to perfection.
Outstanding as usual. We only dine once a year but it seems to get better each year. The ravioli with pistachios was so delicious. The risotto with shaved white truffles was to die for and the veal chop was perfectly prepared rare + Sergio our waiter recommended an excellent wine.
We have eaten here on a number of occasions while visiting Chicago. The first was merely for convenience, as it was only a few blocks from our hotel. We have returned several times, as the quality of food and service is excellent.
Just wonderful experience the food was great pasta was amazing and the wine selection was the best ever
I have to go back every time I am in Chicago
Don’t miss the wonderful experience
