The basis of Mauro’s cuisine is “sapori veri’: true, honest, genuine flavors used masterfully to create new sensations, forms and colors. Fresh seasonal ingredients from Italian and local sources will tantalize every taste bud as Mauro allows each bite to speak for itself in a clean, straightforward flavorful vocabulary. With each endeavor Mauro continues to look for new ways to incorporate regional Italian ingredients as he redefines Italian cooking.
Entrees were Ok, not great, but the problem we had was unfair pricing and padding of the bill. Double charges for drinks that were not ordered, a pasta tasting was brought to the table with no indication of price on menu or verbally. Thought it was a promo and ended up being $60 per person. Supposed promo appetizers totaled $480 for our table of 8. A Black Martini was ordered which should not come with olives but did. When the waiter was told he took his fingers and removed the olives. Really? A replacement drink was ordered and subsequently we were charged for both. Many of the staff were very nice but when we addressed the issues with the waiter he said that's the way it is. When leaving the restaurant the owner basically ignored our concerns and said he would simply reply to this comment. "People in Italy would be offended if they were informed of pricing" was his comment. Extremely disappointed. Buyer beware and double-check your bill! See attached
I am completely disgusted with people like these, they eat like pigs and everything is fine until the bill arrives. Complaining in so many restaurants means either free dinner, half price or gift certificate for the next time. You make me sick. And please write the truth and not your made up story. Remember the fingers didn't go in the martini, Capra.
This was the fifth or sixth visit to Pelago for my wife and me. We love the quiet ambiance, the attendant service and, of course, the quality of the food preparation, the main reason for coming.
Good lunch for my vacation date
Wonderful service and people. All occasions wonderful. Elegant dining..:
Always extremely good, always friendly and always a wonderful experience.
Perfection - from the impeccable service to the chef’s individual attention and fresh/delicious food. The closest to actually eating in Italy that you will get in Chicago. A true gem.
This was our 3rd visit. The moment we walked in the front desk greeted us like we were old friends welcoming us back. The black truffle pasta was delicious. The special seafood appetizer had this terrific sauce. My wife who is not a big seafood lover could not praise it enough. Service and quality of food are always at a high level. Appreciated the live music New Years Eve too. The singer was good and the volume level was appropriate for this type of restaurant. Will definitely be back.
Our favorite place in the neighborhood. The food and service are always great and they do a nice job of pairing wines with the food.
Best Italian in town; service impeccable and Chef Mauro is there!
Outrageous food and impeccable service. One of my favorite dinners in a long time. The Veal chip was perfect. The baby octopus appetizer was tender and flavorful. The wine list is complete and impressive. Best service at a restaurant in 2019
Disappointing NYE dinner. Started with ordering a bottle of wine recommended by our waiter. No sommelier. Another guy comes back with a different bottle, as the bottle recommended by our waiter was sold out. Why didn't our waiter come back with an apology? He was standing 30 feet away at the time and was not dealing with another table. I asked the new guy if the new recommended wine was on the wine menu. He said it wasn't. I asked the price and he said the same as the bottle that I originally ordered; $225. I looked up the wine on my favorite (and trusted) wine-rating website. It was rated 88. And the current retail price was $35.00. Ordered a different bottle from the wine list.
Our shared salad was meh. My wife had a veal chop. She liked it. I had the steak with foie gras. The steak was undercooked (rare vs. med-rare). The foie gras was whipped, with butter and cream? I could not taste foie gras at all. All for a mere $74.
It's too bad. Although Pelago has never been reasonable, at least you got value. Last night, the value was gone, and the prices were elevated.
We live in the neighborhood, and will never go back.
This is a very expensive restaurant so I expect service and food to live up to the cost. We asked to have 4 courses served separately. But the 2nd and 3rd courses came together and the server said the kitchen was too busy to accommodate us. This was very disappointing. Also, wine service was very slow. I asked for a glass of wine during on of the courses did not receive it until I was finished with the course. The pasta course was not up to standard. The pasta was overcooked and the rage was very stringy. All the other food was outstanding. My expectations were not met so this dampened the overall experience.
One of the best, if not the best Italian restaurant in Chicago. Food is outstanding from the appetizers and pastas and risottos to the main courses. A fantastic wine list is accompanying the food. The staff is fantastic, very professional, knowledgable and friendly. They really help you select and or customize your dishes and enjoying to provide you a great experience. Very Italian approach to run a restaurant from the dishes to the staff. And the best, the noise level is really low for a restaurant, which makes it so much more enjoyable.
I had at the gnocchi di patate in salsa tricolore and the salman in a mustard sauce. Strongly recommend the restaurant and the dishes.
We had a really delightful lunch with old friends visiting with us in Chicago. The restaurant is beautiful, tasteful and quiet. Excellent service and exceptional Italian cuisine. This was our first visit to Pelago and we will certainly return.
If you like people hovering over you- go there!
Can’t leave the purse beside you on the bench...
Had to hide it under the table
The food was a scam... pasta overloaded with tomato sauce... cold rolls of bread that were served with style but didn’t change the dryness of the bread.
To top it all, we were served with special pasta.. “white truffle “ pasta, very oily- didn’t taste like truffle. The charge for that pasta was 80 dollars... they don’t tell you the price- we should have asked.. we packed most of our meals- maybe the homeless guy we gave it too appreciated it. We went home to eat
Seriously fantastic in every way and a killer Italian wine list!!!!!!!
What a wonderful night out in Chicago this evening. Everyone was so nice from the moment we walked in. It was like we were there favorite customer. Spot on service with incredible food.
Tony was the Best. We will be back
We had high expectations for our dinner, but this was by far the worst dining experience we have ever had. We went to Pelago based on a recommendation from the concierge at the Ritz and also Tiffany’s. They now know of our horror story and Im pretty sure will not be sending people there anymore. We ordered 2 appetizers for the four of us but but we were charged for 8. We had thought it strange that our appetizers were divided into individual portions for us but our server never gave us a chance to even ask him about this. Than a martini glass was broken by one of their staff and the glass went all over our table. They did not offer to replace my friends drink nor did they apologize. Later on our friend took a drink of water and pulled a very large shard of glass from his mouth. My husband’s veal chop was so over done it was inedible. He was not given the choice to order a new one as our server was too put out to bother with it, so he literally when into the kitchen and threw a plate of chilled octopus (that was intended for another table) in front of my husband and took off again. When the bill came and we asked why we were charged for 8 appetizers, and also what would be done about the broken glass/plastic, he took $20 off the $700 bill!! The owner/chef became involved and to say the least this man is unhinged. He yelled at my husband and our friend saying we are “those kind of people” and we just want a free meal and to leave a bad yelp review. We did not ask nor want a free meal and I have never left a bad review on a restaurant. He was truly putting words in our mouths. He yelled at us to just get out and never come back. We paid $600 to be treated with no respect and left feeling stunned and emotionally abused.
Have really enjoyed Pelago over the past several years. The food and service in particular have been very good. Not sure if there have been some changes but food was just okay and service was disappointing. In addition to the service being pushy, they served a wrong appetizer and mixed up a couple of entrees. Not sure if/when we will go back. Sad to see what was such a special place fall so short.
Expensive food for the amount of food one gets. The desserts were very expensive!!
If you love top notch true Italian food, this is the place for you. Quiet, charming, great wine list and wonderful food. Just one block off of Michigan Ave on a very quiet street. We will definitely be going back.
Always a lovely dining experience. The staff and chef are incredibly personable, the food is exquisitely prepared and presented, and the atmosphere civilized and elegant.
Food was excellent as was service. Definitely someplace to visit again.
ONe of my favorites in Chicago and one of the best italian restaurants I have ate at, even in Italy. Pata with white truffle superb. Also the fish.
We will not return even though we have a residence nearby. The pasta dinner dish we have gone there to enjoy has increased to an obscene price, now $78 for a small serving of white truffle linguine. No meat or anything else...
Price unreasonable, many excellent other Italian restaurants in the area. Pelago displays an arrogance only exceeded by the unreasonable price of their pasta.
Always an outstanding experience, Pelago is my go-to for both elegant lunches and wonderful dinners. The restaurant is a treasure balancing outstanding food, thoughtful preparation/presentation, excellence in service and one of the most beautiful design aesthetics of a restaurants in the city. Outstanding all-around, every time! Five stars and two thumbs up.
This is a first class experience and it never disappoints. The best Dover Sole and Pasta in the City. Service is exceptional.
When bill came I was charged for wine I did not order plus wine I did order. Server seemed put out when I pointed out the error
Overall an overpriced, unpleasant experience
I will never go back
The best chef makes your dish fresh for a small pleasant wait that is worth it
Menu was perfect but the service was poor . Having the server always trying to sell and sell more is not what you expect from such a restaurant
The staff was fantastic and worked together as a team. They offered great suggestions. Everything was wonderful.
Excellent white-table cloth iRoman fine dining t
Great restaurant but super pricey!
Just wonderful love going here! My most favorite restraunt
This is the best kept secret in Chicago. A very exclusive, exquisite respite. The wine list is amazing and the personal attention to detail by the chef/owner is evident in every aspect of the experience.
Wine is listed at about 3 times store price. I find this excessive, even though the list is terrific.
The risotto with white truffles was spectacular and the lamb chops were the best I have had at a restaurant. The rabbit was good but not great ( a little dry)
Every meal we’ve had here is superb and the service is knowledgeable and attentive.
It started out a bit iffy. The front desk was a little less than warm. I understand the no coats on the chair rules, so I would recommend they rehearse a more welcoming way of asking.
Now for the good stuff.
The wait staff was everything thing you would expect at a restaurant of this caliber.
The food was great. Beautiful presentation excellent portions and exquisite flavors.
If you haven’t tried Pelago you should.
Stellar. Delicious. Wonderful people. Food is phenomenal and the tasting menu is extraordinary.
