What Insiders Are Saying
A bit more touristy and a bit more parent-y than we remember, but Peasant still has a few home run dishes worth visiting for.
Encountered a very rude waiter. The waiting time was a little bit long. So I asked approximately how long it is going to be. He was very rude and almost ridiculed me. Saying hey man, it is Saturday night, I have not control. It is what it is, it comes out when it comes out.
Simply the best. Order the lamb chops!
This is our go to restaurant for a great meal out. Favorite dishes are razor clams, skate, risottos, pizza (and their bread!!). Service is always near perfect. So far (after at least 10 visits), we haven't had a bad meal and will continue going back.
Welcoming and knowledgeable staff and delicious food. We had a wonderful time as always!
The food was good, but for the price expect much better service. We arrived at 7pm for a 7pm reservation and had to wait for 30 minutes for our table, with no explanation or apologies, felt like a ploy to get us to spend an extra $40 on two glasses of wine at the bar while we waited. As it appeared there were table in the dining room open when we arrived which I was told were held for "reservations" (the irony seemed lost on the hostess).
Excellent Italian food. Their veal ragout is outstanding, their lamb flavorful and delicate at the same time. Their polenta and octopus appetizers delicious.
I have been several times and never disappointed. Good ambiance, service, and food. I don't eat meat so I am not sure about the roasted pig, which is (I think) a specialty there. But friends who have had it said it was delicious. Would definitely recommend.
I think overall the service was very good the appetizers were very good the bread and the entrées were good.
If there were any criticisms of the food I would say that the skate entrée just didn’t taste fresh and the noise level was very very high but outside of that I had a pretty good experience thank you.
Dîner avec mon épouse et nos deux enfants
Love the energy of this place. Food and service are also outstanding.
Our first, and certainly not our last, meal at Peasant. To begin, a basket of heavenly warm bread arrived and equally heavenly ricotta and olive oil—as was the rest of the meal: creative, delicious food; warm, welcoming ambiance; and 5-star service. We were three women sharing 1 appetizer (a sausage special), 1 pasta (lasagne de coniglio)—rabbit ragu with béchamel), and 1 main course (roast suckling pig)—ample servings of all. The server divided the pasta and main courses before bringing them to the table. A most enjoyable evening.
Great food and service!
We love Peasant! The food is always delicious, and the service is impeccable. We ordered the roast suckling pig (a must!!) and the tagliolini with veal ragu. Both were amazing! I can’t wait for our next trip to NYC so we can return to Peasant.
Delicious food, knowledgeable waiter who was very attentive and great all around vibes!
Wonderful menu and service.
We couldn’t have asked for a better dining experience. Our server was very knowledgeable about everything on the menu and wine list. The food was outrageously good from the razor clams and polenta with mushrooms to the sausage with lentils (omg delicious!). We also had the malloreddus with lamb neck ragu and the suckling pig. They split the pasta and main courses that we were sharing onto two dishes. The ambiance was cozy and the dining room is rustic with a bit of a hip vibe.
Nice warm ambiance with simple and good food. A place that I can turn to when I need a pleasant place to get together with friends. Wine list is very brief but a couple of inexpensive bottles that I gave a try were pleasant and not bad at all.
Great setting, dim lighting, exposed brick kitchen in back, everything on the menu was delicious and our waitress made the night. Will definitely be back very soon!!
Had a wonderful time. Food was as good as every other time I’d gone. Service was attentive and friendly
I think Peasant is quite underrated. It's a lovely restaurant with great atmosphere and delicious food. The wine pairings are always good and the menu diverse. I appreciate that there aren't simply one or two seafood options but are instead multiple choices for those of us pescatarians. The meat dishes look hearty and delicious too.
Absolutely amazing!! Wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly. He made great food and wine suggestions. Everything we ordered was wonderful!!!!!! Will definitely make a return trip to this restaurant next time we are inNew York .
The impeccable service is only surpassed by the incredible food. The entire experience is memorable: from the friendly hostess to the warm, inviting dining room. The menu is varied and delicious and you can’t beat their desserts! I love, love, love this place!
Feels like being in Italy, not NY!!!
Menu was varied and interesting; wild boar, rabbit, hen and includes the usual staples; which were all well-prepared and delicious. YUM! Both thumbs up!
Had a great time as always! Love the food and wine list. Staff is friendly and helpful!
great restaurant however we were seated in the back where there was a cold draft coming from the ceiling that they could not explain which made it very uncomfortable while eating dinner, especially on such a cold night! so unfortunate since the service, food and ambience were great as was the cellar bar with great music after dinner
Always a stand-out. the wood-burning ovens are visually-attractive and produce phenomenal food. Keep it up!
We were here for a birthday with a large group. The evening started out great at a large table in the basement. The food was excellent throughout except for the flourless chocolate cake - it was hard as a rock. The cherry jam on top did it no favors either. Very strange. The big issue was how the night ended. Our dinner started at 7:30. By 9 the downstairs was crowded and not 2 minutes after we paid the bill at 9:45ish our server told us unceremoniously to leave. I understand restaurant scheduling but the length of our dinner was a factor of the slowness of the kitchen, not us. Don’t schedule your tables like a cattle call so close together if your kitchen is slow! It put a damper on the rest of the evening because we had to go outside into the cold to decide where to go next since the restaurant had kicked us out. We probably won’t go back. There are plenty of other places in NYC that aren’t so full of themselves.
Extremely loud , and seating is so close it felt as if we were on a date with the people around us. Good was good, although stay away from the duck. Super salty - shared my lamb chops with my date instead. Waiter was great.
Had a drink in the downstairs bar, then dinner upstairs. Food was amazing! When I made the reservation, I put "birthday dinner " in the special requests. Upon confirming my reservation, they said your server would bring out dessert with a candle. Unfortunately, that was not communicated and we had to ask. Otherwise, our server was amazing and we had a terrific dinner!
Incredible experience! The ambiance at Peasant is always so cozy especially on these frigid evenings. Decadent comfort food at its finest.
Great! One of my favorite spots. Grab dinner here regularly. Great food. Management and staff are always excellent.
Seriously the most delicious gnocchi I’ve ever had in my life. And I always order gnocchi. Love this place!
Went for an anniversary dinner after I saw Peasant on a list of "romantic" restaurants. Perhaps should've called to reserve a better table, as we were seated against the wall -- one person on a bench seat next to other diners and the other person in a chair. Not a romantic set-up. Food was pretty good but not remarkable.
Second time here; another great meal. The lamb chops, with polenta, are the best ever--so flavorful!
We had the best waiter, Andrea, who couldn't have been more charming if he tried. Baby octopus was a great app. Only complaint is the two-tops are too close. Felt like a communal table. For $42 an entree, I'd appreciate more than 12 inches between me and the next table....
I always order fish and I’m always disappointed with a dried up fillet or the size of the portion. The fish options at peasant were on point. I ordered the whole sea bream which was not only XL, but also perfectly grilled and so insanely delicious. I’ll be coming back here just for that dish, although I eyed some amazing looking pastas and grilled seafood on other tables. Food is just amazing. The service was excellent as well. Impressive place.
Very good food, though a bit on the pricy side for some of the extras (salads, soups, etc.). Still, amazing quality food and great service with an old world feel. I will say it was quite loud to the point it was difficult to hear across the table.
Amazing Cuisine and attentive service during our Birthday dinner for a party of five.
