We have been coming regularily to the PEASANT COOKERY since it opened. We enjoy the ambience, convenience /proximity to the theatres and the fantastic service. We also love the regular menu items as well as the specials that are introduced from time to time. This is especially perfect restaurant in the winter with its big windows looking out into the snowy exchange district while dining on fantastic comfort foods like home made soups, tortiere, herb fed pork chops and lots of other choices.

These are suggestions. The food is very good and more information about where the seafood/fish is sourced and what sustainable ecologically based feed does it receive. Or any meat for that matter. I prefer animal husbandry that allows the animal best circumstances possible. What are they fed etc. Go the extra distance and have factual written information available for patrons. Help make difference and it will demonstrate care for environment as well as establishing the restaurant as a leader in areas we should all be participating to make sustainable changes. We don't have to be sheep.

Because your food is excellent in taste and presentation why is your coffee so sub standard .

Great service, wonderful ambiance, great menu!!! The quiche and salad greens were tasty but the quiche was a little undercooked. Generous portion and good price.

Overall the meal, atmosphere and service was well done. It became awkward though when we were asked to leave and move to the bar. I guess we had overstayed our welcome. This interaction could have been done a bit smoother.

We are always impressed when we eat at The Peasant and this was no exception. Three of us were there to celebrate our girlfriend's birthday. We love going out together and sharing dishes so everyone gets to try several dishes. The Peasant is always very accommodating in bringing extra plates and serving utensils as we need them.

We ordered the calamari and duck bruschetta as appetizers. The calamari was cooked perfectly and the romesco sauce was delicious. The bruschetta won the appetizer round though; the bean puree adds a unique flavour and texture along with the rich duck confit.

The three of us shared the clam and bacon pasta (which I might have thought too greasy if not for the high quality olive oil they use in the pesto), the chorizo meatballs (we'd had these on our last visit and ordered again this time because they are amazing; rich, filling and extremely flavourful), and the half chicken (probably the best chicken I've eaten in any restaurant, moist well balanced flavour in the maple laquer and complemented nicely by the leek bread pudding and cranberries on the plate). We had a great bottle of wine (recommended to us on our last visit and ordered again) and we were well attended to by the personable and knowledgeable staff.

It was later on a Thursday night, so it was a bit quieter inside than during a busy service time. We always find that we can easily hold a conversation here, even when they are packed full with diners. We sat in one of the semi-circular booths that faces the street so we had a great view of the Exchange and Old Market Square while we ate. The seating accommodates the sharing of dishes very well. In the past, we've also eaten at the bar, and enjoyed watching the bartenders work and chatting with them.

The Peasant remains one of our favourite dining spots in Winnipeg. It always feels decadent but comforting at the same time. Great for a date or special occasion, or if you're simply feeling indulgent.

As always the challenge of whether to round up or round down when considering a rating. We went to rounding down from 4.5 to 4. The main reason being that while we enjoyed our meals, we likely would not order the main dishes again.

The service, right from the greeting by the Hostess to our server was excellent. Attentive, friendly, engaged and taking time to explain things without the sense she had to 'run' away to other customers. Nicely done. The drink menu has a full listing of beers but sadly, most of them are in bottles/cans. A very limited selection on tap. The wine selection 'by the glass' however was quite reasonable.

Wed is the day to go with $1 oysters. While the oysters themselves are not that big they are very tasty. Add to that their side of horseradish is excellent. A great kick but without being sharp or cruel(ie the natural horseradish that clears your sinuses for a month)

The bison meatloaf was 'okay'. It was very dense and almost dry. I understand that bison is a very lean meat but still, it was not melt in your mouth tender, rather a bit chewy. The saving grace was the shiitake mushroom gravy. They brought me an extra portion and that made all the difference. The mashed, beets, beans etc were nicely cooked and hot.The Skrei Cod was very meaty and one could really taste the bacon in the chicken bacon broth. While it was nice at the start, it almost over-powered to taste of the cod by the end of the portion. As mentioned, we enjoyed our mains but we would not order again. The sides on both dishes were excellent.

We saved room for a bit of decadence, the Chocolate Pot de Crème. It was so rich and scrumptious I can't imagine how one person could finish it and still be able to walk out of the restaurant. One minor point is that it was a bit too 'cool' making the custard a little dense; however the biscotti was to die for. That I could eat all night.

The baguette underpinning my pickerel was stale. The pickerel was excellent as was the aioli. The fresh cut bread was satisfactory. The green salad had subtle variety in taste and texture. The waiter was attentive if a little stiff. The general ambiance was agreeably quiet especially when the the bar server at my request turned down the volume of the canned music.

We were disappointed with our meals. Following the server’s recommendation, I ordered the bison meatloaf. It was tasty but very dry. I know that bison is very lean but there ought to be a way for the meatloaf to be juicy. A small amount of gravy was served with the meatloaf but given how dry it was, more gravy was clearly needed. My dinner companion ordered the lamb pie. She was surprised when the dish arrived with a curried mashed potato (and no pastry) on the top of the pie.

It has been a while since I had a meal at Peasant Cookery. I won’t rush back.

Everything about the dining experience at Peasant Cookery was fantastic. One minor beef... The table was near the door, so cold/drafty when other diners came in.

The service was very attentive and the waitress knew her menu well. She was able to describe the different dishes we asked about and gave sound recommendations based on our preferences. The food was delicious and well prepared. The deconstructed cheese cake dessert was outstanding. We will be back.

The service from start to finish was world class. Our server made appropriate recommendations and suggestions for wine, beer, and food. He and the manager engaged one person in our party in a conversation about her disappointment in the lack of Cdn wines avail on the wine list. Above all, we appreciated the attention to detail at our table, specifically providing the flatware needed for each of our food items and not requiring us to reuse flatware for multiple courses. Overall, a phenomenal experience. Thank you!!

I had the bison meatloaf - it was tasty and very filling. I'm surprised that such a popular restaurant does not have daily specials. Their menu hasn't changed in a few years; it's time they did alter it. I go here because it's close to MTC. In winter it has a cozy feel.

Second time we've been to Peasant Cookery in the last couple years and we were reminded why we love this restaurant so much and wish we could come more often! Incredible service, from the management to the servers. They really take care of you and know their food. Obviously the food is top notch and great wine selection. Great ambience, not too loud not too quiet. Can't wait for our third visit!

This was my second visit to this establishment. First visit was for an office Christmas party and to be honest, I didn't think I would ever go back but decided to give it a second chance and glad that I did.
This time, with friends prior to a show at the playhouse theatre. We all loved that we were asked if we were headed anywhere afterwards and when we said yes, we were asked what time we would like to be out of there. They timed everything perfectly! Staff was awesome, everyone was very impressed with their meals from the clam pasta dish, to the gnocchi, beef brisket, and the amazing fish and sticks. Now I can honestly say, can't wait to go back.

The service was horribly slow. It seemed like we had been forgotten about. Three of our four drinks were brought out first (after a long delay) and the last one took another 10 minutes and required a reminder. The wine bottle wasn't kept near our table and we had to ask for refills (which we would have done if the bottle was near). One of our meals (Tourtière) was completely black on the outside, the pork was fatty and bland. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere though so it was a shame that the service and food will keep us away.

We choose not to have appetizers. I had the Tourtiere. I have always shied away from eating this in the past when I have gone to other restaurants. Going on the waitresses suggestion, I tried it and was not disappointed. It was absolutely amazing. I was spoiling myself that evening and order fries with gravy. These are the good old kind of fries with skins on and the gravy was quite unique and flavourable. Too much food for me, but I had leftovers for lunch.
My husband had the Berkshire Pork, again something he has never tried before. The pork melted in your mouth and said it was the best pork he has ever tasted. Again extremely flavourable.
Lastly for dessert, I had the bread pudding. It was a night of trying new things and no regrets except for probably the extra calories. It was absolutely delicious.
Only reason why a mark off, is the hostess was more concerned about the messages on her machine than greeting us.
