Pavilion Restaurant-Northbrook Ratings and Reviews
The Pavilion Restaurant in Northbrook, IL is a hidden gem. The food is absolutely delicious from soup to dessert. Everything we ordered was fresh and perfectly prepared. We dined early and it was not busy so we had a wonderful chance to talk with Amy Mazur, the manager who suggested dishes and who treated us like royalty. If you want to try very reasonably priced superior ethnic food, this is the place for you.

Where do i begin. First its a Saturday night at 6:30 with almost no cars in the lot. Hmmm not a good sign. We walk in and are the only patrons in the place. Hmmmm worrisome. We are seated by the hostess in a quick almost rude manner. Ok? The dining room is nice but the music was too loud and not appropriate for dinner. Ac/dc, led zeppelin etc. The waiter asks us about drinks. My fiance says she'll have an amaretto stone sour. The waiter says whats a stone sour. Ok so we change it to a diet coke and i'll have coke. He comes back with a diet coke only. He says you just wanted water right. Mind you we are the ONLY customers in the place. So he brings me my coke and says sorry thats he's worked 60 hours this week. Oh great, i love to hear that. So you cant get a drink order correct when we are the only people in the place. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the meal. So we order an appetizer, the Siberian Pelmeny. They actually we're good. The hostess, waiter and bartender twice left us totally alone in the restaurant as they went out the front door. To do what, who knows.
So for the entree, my fiance ordered the beef stew. Sorry, we are out of the beef stew she is told. Ok go on to order some other entree which was so-so. Now onto dessert, the hostess brings us the dessert menu and says we have everything EXCEPT the apple strudel. The waiter comes by after she leaves and says she was mistaken because they had just made apple strudel that morning. Great, we'll have 2 servings of apple strudel. The waiter takes our order and collects the dessert menus and disappears into the kitchen. 2 minutes later who should arrive at our table but the hostess with the dessert menus saying the waiter was INCORRECT and that they really are out of apple strudel. So we order a different dessert and can't wait to get the hell out of this place.
Dining at the Pavilion is always enjoyable. This was the first time that we were here for lunch and the menu choices were awesome and priced under $10.00 / hard to believe considering the large portion sizes. We've been here for dinner many times and the food and service is always Superb.
We always enjoy going to the Pavilion where it is possible to have decent conversations due to low noise level. Most of their food is innovative and freshly prepared. I had the eggplant and Portobello sandwich which for me was too oily and a little too salty. Their bowl of borscht was different and very good. The other 5 people in our group also all enjoyed their dishes but the one who had the penne pasta wished it had more marinara sauce on it.
Quirky restaurant with interesting (eclectic) menu with emphasis on Eastern European dishes. Can get a bit loud on FRI night. Friendly service but can be quite slow and forgetful if busy. Bit on the pricey side especially considering desserts, which are tiny--just be prepared
Place is amazing. Has never failed to impress me with great service & food. Food is delicious no matter what I have ordered. The manager is friendly & I feel I am a returning family. Would recommend this place to anyone. Quality, good service & great cooking.
Had a wonderful evening at Pavilion restaurant. This included good cocktails and fine food. My wife had a melon martini and I tried the Moscow mule to start and both were excellent. Appetizers included crab cakes and pilmeni, both of which were very fresh and tasty. For dinner we shared three kebobs and side orders. Best was the chicken. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Very hearty Russian/Ukrainian dishes, very well prepared and very tasty. Portions are more than generous. Presentation is 20+ years outdated - serving pieces were 80's kitsch. The featured soups were almost a meal by themselves. The Pelmeni and Vereneki were overboiled and coming apart but retained a good flavor. The charcuterie board was excellent and is a very good buy for the price asked. Wines are sensibly offered, sensibly presented on the list, and no extravagance involved - a totally non-intimidating wine list - BRAVO!!! Cocktails were 3/4 the usual price. The wait staff and front of house were tremendously friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with the menu. It was a Saturday and, around 7, what I would call the "usual suspects" wandered in. This senior crowd (and I am a senior, too) were surly, complaintive, loud enough to make sure their presence was known, and wrecked the atmosphere. So, go early or don't go, unless you want to sit thru a sitcom playing out in real life. I feel sorry for the staff having to put up with that type of crowd as regulars.
Everything was pretty good. The food was tasty, the servers were nice, and the atmosphere was clean. But one thing I disliked was the small size of the combination platter (pelmeni and varenikis). I mean, seriously, this thing cost $17! I was expecting a heaping platter, but instead I just got a small pile in this bowl-like contraption! Come on! At Chinese Resuatrants, $17 can prolly buy many platters of dumplings! How come here, it only gets me a small pile? Please either increase the amount of food or lower the price of this appetizer. Nonetheless, this was prolly the only major dislike I had. Very food dining experience overall, and would recommend it to anyone who loves Russian and other foreign foods in addition to American food. And all the other dishes I had (Borsht, Chicken Kiev, beet chips, and Smettanik) did fill me up. I was actually kinda stuffed by the end. All those foods tasted great except the beet chips.
There were several groups of four at the Pavillion for lunch when we were there. The lunch specials were varied and good... also a very nice value.... We were playing cards in the next room...our orders were taken and we continued playing until we were called into the dining room... Perfect!
What a great find. My wife and i gave this restaurant a shot because of the online menu.....and it didn't disappoint. Although they were out of chicken...we found other items on the menu (salmon and cornish game hen) which rocked in taste and presentation. We dined on a Sunday evening..quiet.....attentive staff.
I took my wife to this place for our 30th anniversary. The restaurant is not located in the most convenient or best looking shopping malls. But as soon as I entered the restaurant, I liked its ambiance. It was cozy, quiet, and not too bright or too dark. Just perfect for dining out with your loved one. The service was excellent. The waiter was very friendly, attentive, and patient to listen to me and explain things that I didn't know in terms of foods or how to order them. The food was very good. The house salad was fresh, the Ukrainian soup and calamari was not too salty as is the case in most places, and the sea bass was grilled just right. I highly recommend this place to people who want memorable dining experience with loved ones.
We have dined here several times. The food, service and ambiance have been very consistent-- always good. There is an interesting selection of menu items. The staff is particularly friendly. We had an early Friday evening reservation. The dining room had several empty tables and the room was conversation friendly.
