Paulette's Restaurant at the River Inn of Harbor Town Ratings and Reviews
Once in Overton Square, now at Harbor Town, Paulette's is still the romantice Memphis icon. For a quiet romantic dinner with superb food and excellent service, you can't beat Paulette's. Top it off with an overnight stay upstairs in the River Inn, and you'll Paulette's breakfast on the house!!
This was my first time going for lunch and I specifically stated on my reservation that we needed to be sat in a more quiet area of the restaurant. Well we ended up being placed in a centrally located table in a back room filled with some ladies social club meeting of 35-40 people. Try conducting an interview when it feels like 10 TV's are full blast on volume watching The View. Even better they shut to doors to the room locking in the sound.
At dinner, this place is amazing; for lunch not so much. Would not recommend for any type of professional meeting at lunch.
Excellent food but service was miserably slow. Other tables ate and left. Took us 2 hours for lunch. Waiter blamed it on two showers that were going on. I say these things are scheduled and a good restaurant will not let it impact other customers. Would certainly hesitate to go here if on a schedule.
This was a Christmas get together for our book club group. Of course we had reservations but when we arrived the employee who asked to help us made us wait at the front while he walked around looking. It appeared as though he couldn’t find our reservation. Turns out he assumed we were with a bridal party because we were carrying gifts. Once he looked in computer he found our reservations and we were seated. He was not friendly. However, we had a great table with a great view and great food and a great server!
This was our first visit to Paulette's since they moved from Overton Square years ago. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was excellent. The food had high and low points. The seared foie gras was spectacular. I had the lamb chops and my wife the Paulette's filet. I ordered the lamb chops medium rare and they came out medium. My wife ordered her filet medium and it was medium with parts that quite rare. I expected more consistency for the price.
I was excited about this brunch, based on the reputation of the restaurant. It did NOT live up to the hype. Our server was friendly, but it was evident to me pretty quickly this doesn’t equate to effective. He forgot multiple requests early in the dining experience (e.g. creamer). Perhaps it is their standard practice, but he did not write down ANY orders. This was a huge red flag given 4 out of 5 orders were build your own omelet. When the food arrived - which took awhile - only one of the omelets was correct (ham & cheese). The rest were missing 1 or more topping or included toppings that weren’t requested. Someone asked for turkey bacon, which we were told they don’t serve AFTER the omelet was brought out with pork sausage. The egg white omelet was undercooked and thrown together. I realize egg whites aren’t the easiest to hold together, but most good restaurants can do it. When we pointed out what was missing he brought the items out in small side dishes. So the missing bacon came out as bacon crumbles, which at this point should have just been a side of bacon since the omelet was half eaten. The spinach came out as a side of spinach, which should have been recooked in the omelet, since the whole plate went back to the kitchen. And although the ham and cheese omelet was correct the first time, the side of potatoes were visibly hard and dried out and had to be replaced. I received exactly what I ordered (french toast and shrimp & grits). The french toast was delicious, but we had to make multiple requests for extra syrup and plates to split it. The shrimp and grits had a nice flavor, but the grits were on the thin/runny side and a small portion. One guest asked to speak to the manager, who never came to the table. She was simply told the egg white omelet would not be charged. Even the bills were split incorrectly, adding 10 mins of delays in us leaving. Still no manager visit although I assume that’s who I could hear the server talking to behind the wall.
The meal started with what at first glance looked like a cream puff but after inquiring I was told is a “popover”. It was a light and flaky pastry that when paired with their strawberry butter made an excellent alternative to a boring bread basket. I had the pleasure of dinning on a Wednesday evening which was Lobster night and as the price was reasonable I could not resist. I added on a 4oz filet so essentially turned it in to a surf and turf. The house salad followed the popovers and consisted of fresh greens, cherry tomatoes and a bit shredded carrot. It was dressed with olive oil and a delightful balsamic that left me wanting for more. Thankfully just as I finished the salad the entree arrived. The Lobster tail was well prepared and not overcooked as was the filet. The filet while melted in my mouth and was a perfect compliment to the lobster tail when dipped into the drawn butter. The standard sides were red potatoes and squash based vegetable medley. I would definitely return and would make this a top spot for a romantic dinner next time the opportunity arises.
