Pasteur Ratings and Reviews
My dining experience at Pasteur was awesome. It was like being on vacation. First the attention by all staff from Leon the manager , Mia our server to all employees was impressive. Everyone worked as a team and were attentive in a warm, friendly manner. The food and ambiance was excellent. I cannot wait to return.. I highly recommend Pasteur restaurant , you won’t be disappointed.. it is a treasure and I am looking forward to ding in their beautiful outdoor patio.
We try to dine here at least once a month. The food is always excellent, the service is friendly and the ambiance can't be beat. Leon, your host is friendly and welcoming. Nick the bartender is the best on the North side. Kim, the owner makes your feel like a relative ! Love this place !
I love this restaurant. However, the service is either non-existent or over zealous. On this last visit, we had, at one point or another, seven people approach our table to offer water or ask us how everything was. It was annoying to say the least. They were hovering like vultures. Our waitress, who came over immediately after we sat down, was never seen after that. If they could fix their staffing issue, this place would truly be an overall wonderful experience.
We decided to have dinner before the play at Jackalope Theatre at the Broadway Armory. And we have enjoyed Pasteur a few times in the past. When we found the Pasteur Groupon, we bought it and made reservations on OpenTable. I wrote a note on OpenTable that we had a groupon.
Unfortunately, when we arrived, they apologetically told us that they don't honor Groupon On Saturdays because it gets REALLY busy. Groupon has screwed up and not put that on the Groupon
The owner and the whole staff felt bad about it and wanted us to stay and we were really hungry. So, we stayed and it was early (5:30pm) so we got great attention. The owner, the hostess, the wait staff all stopped to ensure we liked everything.
I had the BEST TIto's martini with a lemon twist. And you know, you CAN screw up a martini. This one was perfect temp and the lemon twist was big enough and oily enough to create a delightfully smooth and tasty martini.
With the groupon, you get to choose 4 courses but you are limited. Without a groupon, you get exactly what you want and what we wanted weren't on the 4 courses you can choose from. I was SO happy to order the Curry Duck and Craig got to order catfish.
We were so happy to have exactly what we wanted and not use the Groupon! In fact, the pricing at Pasteur is SO reasonable, you should just go without the Groupon.
We felt so taken care of and thank the owner and the staff for such wonderful treatment. I love the decor too.
Was here on Sunday night with wife and daughter. Only three tables were occupied. Beautiful restaurant. Great ambiance. I had pho to start and then whole red snapper. Cooked to perfection. My wife wasn't very hungry so she only had pho as an entree. My daughter had the signature beef steak. All very good. There was a nice selection of wine which was very reasonable. We selected the Chidaine Touraine Sauvignon Blanc which was excellent. I would return here for dinner except I'm now back in Florida.
Our food was good, however on a Saturday night with a half-full restaurant, they were out of three different menu items we wanted to order. Including the signature luc lac! The rest of our food was good, and the staff was very apologetic, but it was a rather poor experience for such a nice restaurant.
Fabulous food in a beautiful dining room. I had been wanting to go here for a very long time (French Vietnamese). The service was outstanding, friendly and concerned but not overtly so. Food was fabulous, delicious beef house special, delicious dumplings and creative and tasty cocktails. Good value.
I adore this place ! It is just a beautiful and elegant yet relaxed atmosphere inside and a large and pretty patio in warm weather !
I love that it has a quiet and intimate atmosphere. The food is just delicious and a nice variety.
Wine is very reasonable too.
The manager and staff are warm and attentive.
This place used to be great. After we placed our order, it took a while for someone to come over and tell us that the restaurant ran out of tofu -- the basic ingredient of virtually every vegan offering in the menu. Overall, it took nearly an hour to get anything to each, and then the order was mixed up. The place was more than half empty on a Saturday night.
The servers are friendly, but everything was ridiculously slow. I love to dine and have no issue with a 2 hour dinner, but keep a drink in front of me (water, wine, cocktail). A table near us complained that they’d waited an hour to get entrees. We waited 45 minutes.
The room is pretty, but the ceiling needs to be cleaned. Cobwebs and dust clearly visible.
I remembered this place from when I lived in Chicago the first time and hoped it would be a great evening. We were disappointed.
It is a very nice atmosphere but our food had not arrived after waiting an hour and a half. After complaints to the management he noted they had a private party going and things were slow. He apologized and paid our meal, but it still was not worth it. Too bad, as I love the fact of where it is located and its overall atmosphere.
My wife and I have dined here at least twice every month for quite a while. Kim (owner/Chef) and Leon (our Host), always make it a great experience. The food is always fresh and delicious. Our favorites are the steamed dumplings, shrimp tempura, the Pho and their special tenderloin dish. The bartender is Kim's son and does a great job of not only remembering what wine we like, but making sure we never run short . Great place. did I forget to mention how beautiful it is inside and outside on the patio ? Try it !
We waited for so ling for our food, good thing we had great company, lots of booze and a little appetizer, had we not...we were going to walk out. It was nit a busy nights, we were onr if the few diners. We just dont understand how we never got fed under 1 hour. . The sever and the the bar tender gave us free dessert and free shots to compensate.
Pasteur is a special favorite with superb quality Vietnamese food ( the steamed fish!), with great appetizers to share and a rich food and drink menu to explore. We discovered the outdoor patio which was lovely-- a perfect evening in late summer/early fall. Spacious, well-designed to provide privacy for conversations, well lit- even fireplaces in the wall! Our guest from out of town were wowed by the food, the ambience and the special touch of the owner coming to greet us on a busy night. Never disappointed here!
This was our first time visiting the restaurant and we'll be back. While there were not many vegetarian entrees, the ones they did have were exquisite. The vegetarian pho was one of the best I have ever eaten. My nephew, a chef, loved the duck in red curry sauce.
The restaurant itself was beautifullly and simply decorated and had a very elegant, but comfortable feel. The patio was my favorite space though. There are fireplaces for cool evenings and the trees are simply decorated with small white lights giving the entire area a magical feel.
As beautiful as the restaurant and as sophisticated as the menu though, Pasteur was not perfect. The wait staff and extenders were nice and responsive, but oh my goodness, they were also disorganized (that night at least). Twice staff took a single dish from table to table looking for the patrons who had ordered it. And one table of guests were served their entrees before their appetizer. This was a slight mar on the overall great experience. I say slight because the excellent certainly outweighed the bad.
Pasteur is definitely still on our 'go to' list.
I'm not sure I got much of the French influence that's implied, but the food is just nice, flavorful, Vietnamese fare in a quiet (so rare!) and pleasant space. Loved the patio. And the wine list is great; most of the wines on the list are $35 bottle, which is so reasonable with restaurant mark-ups being what they are. And there were some gems on the list.
The restaurant itself is gorgeous. The interior is very nicely decorated, and there a lovely patio in back.
The outside temperature that day was over 85 degrees, so we were looking forward to a nice cool indoor dinner. Not so much. They had all the doors and windows open and running ceiling fans. It was miserable. Who wants to dress up to sit and sweat?
Took forever to get food. The place wasn't full, yet with the length of time to get appetizers you would have thought it was standing room only. Then they deliver appetizers at the same time as the main course.
Food was just okay. Honestly, it was too hot inside the restaurant to enjoy a mediocre meal.
We have loved & been loyal to Pasteur for years though its many moves & changes & when it is good, it is great but it is not a reliable experience but one we defend to friends who have had mixed experiences. On a recent visit, the kitchen ran out of one of our favorite dishes so we tried a new dish, the roasted duck curry. It was overpriced for the several pieces of duck we got, and in a dull sauce. We've had similar bad luck with the other newer dishes we've tried so we'll stick with our old favorites, though the Bo Luc Lac was overdone & unlike any previous version we've had in the many decades we've dined at Pasteur. We recommend the steamed fish above all else. The other change is a new host, who gave us a small table in a noisy part of the terrace. His response was "our patio has only so many options available." On the night we were there, the patio was nearly empty & we couldn't help but notice that he happily seated several different parties of two young women at tables for four. Makes you wonder which customers are valued here.
We went for a business dinner on a weekend evening. The servers were in need of some improvement. For apps we had the spring rolls and crispy egg rolls which were ok, not much flavor. The mains included chicken and veggie pho and short ribs all of which were just ok. Though the setting, interior and exterior are very nice and more upscale than most restaurants in this genre, the food is rather lackluster. Head to Argyle St for much better food.
We went to Pasteur with another couple. We had been to Vietnam three months ago and when seeing and stepping into Pasteur, it is like stepping into a Vietnamese restaurant in a French colonial building--very reminiscent. We started with appetizers;the shrimp were awesome. The waiter suggested which ones were good to share and he was right. The waiter then suggested we share entrees, which we did and he was right again--3 entrees for the 4 of us. We ordered ginger chicken, Curry salmon and glazed shrimp, each done just right and very flavorful. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon blanc which was a good value of nice quality. Looking over the wine list, it is not super extensive depth-wise, but contains good breadth and is loaded with several good values. The waitstaff was a duo so we had plenty of attention, but it was not pushy or over bearing. If you want to experience fine dining like in Vietnam, Pasteur is as close as you will come. We will definitely return.
Pasteur is one of the city's best kept secrets. Because of the location it doesn't get the traffic it should. I am always waiting for the day when it is impossible to get in. The combination of great food at very reasonable prices considering the quality, a truly beautiful and spacious dining room and a terrific outdoor patio in back makes it a go to place for me.
