Pasta Moon Ratings and Reviews
One of the first nice restaurants in Half Moon Bay from 30 years ago. I have had many nice meals there over the years. My high school friend and her niece were in town and we had a lovely meal. Crab linguini, eggplant Parmesan, and butternut squash ravioli were our entrees. We split the cheesecake. Nice wine list.
With the exception of the bus boys trying to clear our table over and over when we weren't finished, Pasta Moon was exceptional. I would have rated them higher on service if it were not for the aggressive action of the bus boys to turn the table. This is not of their own doing. They are directed by the management and server to push. They ought to correct this before people just stop wanting to go there and then they won't have to worry about turning the table.
A bit crowded this evening and had to wait for the table despite reservations - it's okay just a 15 min wait. Half Moon Bay had a community Holiday light parade and all the street parking was restricted - hence the crowds. Otherwise the menu was just okay this evening - Had Sea Bass - a bit dry - chefs are rushing a bit and the Fritto Misto had more red onion than calamari.
Both my friend and I were very happy with our meals. It’s important that I Express this detail. My review is based on the fact that when we were choosing a place in half Moon Bay to enjoy a girls night out, I chose pasta Moon because it clearly stated on their website that they had vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. When I made the reservation I even put a little note that we had a vegan and a vegetarian. When we arrived and sat down I was surprised to not see any vegan option on the menu. So, as I do often when I eat out, I told the waiter I was vegan and asked what was available? He offered me the vegetarian dishes. Then when I explained that vegan meant I didn’t eat cheese or meat he offered me the chicken dish without the chicken… Which essentially gave me pasta with sauce. He seemed a little flustered and didn’t know what to offer me and I ended up having the soup and a salad. And again, I want to emphasize that both of those were good but that is not a vegan menu… Or vegan options… it’s soup and a salad. When you are a pasta restaurant and you say that you have vegan options, you should have something on the menu or, be sure that your waitstaff is aware of options. To make the evening even more strange, when the dessert menu arrived it had a desert on it that was clearly marked vegan!!!!!
So therefore I cannot, in good faith, give the restaurant five stars because I could not send my vegan friends there if all they can get is soup and salad.
Always a special venue! Nora provided excellent service - attentive and not obtrusive. The restaurant DESPARATELY needs seafood forks for serving the mussels. Used to have them and niw they don’t, which is problematic for the diner. Food was excellent. Recommend thevseated scallop salad and the Meyer Leon parfsit- always a treat.
When I made our reservation I noted that it was for our anniversary and asked if we could get a quiet table. When we arrived they wished us a Happy Anniversary and led us to a lovely table in a quieter part of the restaurant. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. I love to cook so am difficult to impress, often thinking "I could have made that at home". Not so with all our selections. I had a crab pasta special that could have been either bland or had the ingredients overpower the crab. It was a delicate balance of perfection. We also each had their persimmon salad with pomegranate seeds, frizze lettuce, goat cheese, and a honey mustard dressing. Again, a lovely marriage of flavors. The wine selection they proposed for the meal was also a perfect 10. We will go again!
We had a wonderful meal with phenomenoal service. Could not have been happier with our meal, wine and the wait staff’s suggestions and attentiveness. The only reason our experience was 4 stars versus 5 is because our party of three had the misfortune of being seated in the corner sourounded by two large families. One family had four children, two of which were toddlers. I’m a mother of two active boys, so children are not a bother to me. BUT, in this case the two toddlers screamed at an ear piercing level throughout our meal without intervention from either parent. Wishing there had been an atmosphere more appropriate for either them or us. :)
It was my first time recommended by friend. I took my family for birthday celebration. Food was amazingly delicious however service wasn't that great as we have to called them for clearing the table and even for refill. overhaul, it was an great experience. will visit again.
So this is an upscale place you only should visit if you have money to spend and feel like celebrating, not your everyday diner. The food is wonderful and their wine list impressive. The atmosphere is romantic. The service is good too. I however can’t give them five stars because of their management. We celebrated Thanksgiving there and the experience was quite disappointing. We reserved via OpenTable and were surprised when I received a phone call and an email from the restaurant saying they had canceled my reservation a week before due to lack of credit card on file. I called immediately and was told they were having a technical issue with OpenTable to store credit card information. This didn’t concern me nor had I done anything wrong so I expressed I was upset about them canceling the reservation. Luckily they were able to reserve the table so I thought I could forgive their rudeness. Then we arrived for our reservation and the manager looked at me and my family without even a hint of a smile and said “You have a reservation for 4 yet you are 5.” He was referring to our newborn in her carseat. He said they were full and he didn’t think he’d be able to seat us considering the baby. This was strange since I’ve been there before with the baby and they always seat her at the end of any table with a high chair seat. Then after a few minutes he had someone seat us and just like usual we got the high chair and there was no space problem. Even more bizzare, during our entire meal, the room was half empty even after he’d told me they were full. Then the bill came and it was $360 total (3 meals and 1 child meal, 1 appetizer and drinks). I think for such money we spent we could have been treated better. So I guess this review is a word of warning for families to think twice about this place. At Its Italia down the street the food is just as good but they have never been rude to me.
Outstanding pasta and pizza. Pricey for pasta. Extensive Italian wine list. Creative dishes. Not most authentic Italian experience, in fact I don't get impression this is Italian other than pasta and wine. The atmosphere is contemporary and comfortable and nice. Outstanding fresh made (daily) pasta- some of the best I've had
I've worked my way through this menu and there is not a single item I haven't loved. I usually end up ordering the special. Pablo is a perfect server. Attentive when needed and otherwise, respectful of the diners' conversations. Great experience, once again. Thank you!
We are regulars and always come away happy. The food is great--listen to the wait staff explain the specials before ordering from the menu--and enjoy the quiet sense of professionalism that infuses this restaurant from the kitchen to the bussers. The Italian wine list is great fun to explore. Prices are definitely in the SF premium range, but worth it.
Excellent service. Great menu choices. Very health conscious menu options. Use of local, seasonal ingredients. Put that all together with the totally creative starter (Tempura battered Cinderella Pumpkin wedges with fresh applesauce and a pumpkin seed pesto dips) and our pasta dishes (Linguini Ahi tuna for me and Taggliatelle Bolognese for my hubby) and you have a wonderful dinner experience. What took it over the moon was the dessert: Meyer Lemon Parfait. Complex layers of flavor and a stunning presentation. Just order it! Might be the best dessert you ever tasted.
I've been dining at Pasta Moon for many years and it has always been a highlight of any visit to Half Moon Bay. While the prices have always been on the high side, the food was always exceptional. I would say that this time the service was subpar as in our server did not seem to be well-trained, rushed through the specials and didn't check in often or offer fresh-ground pepper or grated parmesan. The food was just so-so and the pasta was overcooked. Perhaps Pasta Moon has become too large to sustain its former excellent quality?
