Passionfish Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I were traveling to the Pacific Grove/Carmel area for the weekend and wanted to find a seafood restaurant with a very good wine list. After looking at several potential eateries, we decided on Passionfish. Two characteristics encouraged us - first their commitment to sustainable seafood, and second their extensive wine list. We arrived on time and were seated quickly. The place was hopping. Our server was wonderful - the wine list was a tome (my favorite) - and to my surprise, Passionfish does not over charge for wine. Their markup is SIGNIFICANTLY less than any other fine dining restaurant we have visited. This, and the fact that Passionfish stock a NUMBER of half-bottles, allowed us to select wines perfectly paired for our individual dinner selections. The choices were abundant - when you look over the menu and specials and have a difficult time selecting between several options, life is good. Our firsts were very good. Roasted Brussels sprouts for my wife, Sea scallop for me. Our entrees were even better - Sea scallops for my wife, Tuna for me. The entire dining experience was languid - even with all of the activity of the very busy location. We felt taken care of and treated to a dining experience that we will certainly seek out again. Thank you Passionfish!!
Real focus on food quality, not quantity. The meat in the entree is indeed the majority of the fish (as opposed to many other restaurants that heavily dilute the dish with a bunch of cheap carbs). Service is excellent. Noise level is low to moderate, making it very easy to have conversations. At the same time, it is not overly quiet (in which case would make it uncomfortably 'classy'.)
We were there to celebrate our anniversary. A local store owner recommended it to us. The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting. But the food was the real star!! Seriously some of the most delicious flavors I’ve ever had. Very sophisticated menu. All the food was fresh and interesting. Can’t wait to go back next time we’re in Pacific Grove!
The tables are a bit too close together. When our waitress was addressing the table next to ours, her back side was less than a foot from my face while I was eating. It was noticeable and not really what you want inches from your face while dining. Otherwise all good.
We were referred by a friend and made reservations via Open Table. We arrived early & were seated reasonably quickly. Friendly staff. We had a decent table and as busy as the restaurant was, the noise level was tolerable. There were groups, couples, & families at the surrounding tables. Service was good, but it seemed our server/waiter was a bit overwhelmed. He was very professional but forgot about our requested bottled water. Creative menu, VERY reasonably priced wines and/or fair-price for corkage. We ordered the 12 hour lamb & the duck confit. 12-lamb was superb!
Loved our food experience at Passionfish. This restaurant came highly recommended to us and the food did not disappoint. Our first few steps into the restaurant was a little off-putting as the hostess was really rude. We were 10 minutes early for our reservation which in my mind is better than being late. We figured we might have to wait a few minutes, so it was no big deal. The hostess though made it very clear that we were too early and MUST wait. I believe she was a little overwhelmed, but it was not a good first impression. Just a few minutes later, a younger hostess took us to our table and was very welcoming.
Our table was tight quarters as we were literally inches from a table to our left and to our right, so be prepared to share your business with everyone if it is a busy night. Our server was seasoned and helpful in choosing our wine and food. Which brings me to the food... the food was outstanding with fresh, quality, local ingredients that were creatively prepared. The calamari with a habanero dressing was a perfect starter. The Dungeness crab and avocado salad was to die for (I am still dreaming about it). Finally, the albacore tuna encrusted with sesame and black pepper was cooked perfectly and so flavorful. No dessert, but the menu looked good.
Can't wait to go back if I am in the area!
Passionfish made the celebration of my darling's 50th birthday such a special occasion. I loved the touch of printing a birthday message on our menus. Together we are 2 foodies and 1 sommalier, so the menu beckoned with tantalizing flavors and the wine list was a treat. We were so happy with your half bottle selections and were able to pair some fantastic wines with our courses. The service was superb, the people watching was eccentric and fun. We'll be back.
Our annual trip to Carmel for a lawn bowling tournament always culminates in a dinner for the four of us at Passionfish, where we graze the appetizers and add a fee entrees, to share everything among our quartet. We always drink the Rombauer Chardonnay (thanks to one obsessive in the group) and also always experiment with interesting reds from the remarkable wine list. This year's valdiguie blend and the teroldego were both excellent.
Sorry Passionfish, we were underwhelmed. You have a really cozy upscale place with immaculate service. The deep fried oysters with kimchi are delicious, but, only 3 little oysters? We love a spicy seafood soup, but the actual description should say "a lime cilantro broth with 4 little bites of whitefish". The 12-hour lamb was well, a 12 hour lamb. I'm glad I didn't order the overpriced crab salad at 24.95. The menu promises did not meet the expectations. We won't be back.
Had a very good dinner with friends. At first we were seated in an area with very noisy children, but they graciously moved us when we asked for another table. Food was outstanding, but the menu descriptions could use some work. Service was fast and pleasant.
