Passionfish delivered as always: seasonal choices with extra zing as the asparagus appetizer, superbly executed fish and seafood entrees of sustainable varieties; and always perfect desserts should you leave any room in your stomach! We've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, a wedding in the past and our special occasion was dedicated to moving closer to this gem in retirement.
We have enjoyed two marvelous meals at Passionfish this week. Ever mortal was delicious. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. A wonderful dining experience.
Nice place with good waiting staff. Seafood menu that was very eccentric. There was not one regular seafood dish on the menu. All had special this or that.
On vacation in Monterey, we dined at Passionfish twice and on both occasions the food was excellent, sophisticated, light, very fresh ingredients and very subtly cooked. Congratulations to the Passionfish chef and the team.
Well prepared and responsibly sourced seafood in a non-reverberant environment (multiple room dividers and acoustic treatment keep the space relaxing.) Very good service and near-retail wine pricing (as opposed to normal restaurant mark up.) Nice artwork.
Wow! This was our second time here- both while visiting. Passionfish is probably the thing we loved most on both of our trips to Pacific Grove! Food quality is exceptional and the service is outstanding!
Passionfish is a reliable restaurant, always offering delicious and meticulously prepared seafood. For this visit, I started with the fish stew (excellent, $10) and my partner enjoyed the asparagus salad (a special that evening, $12). I thought my Atlantic Char ($26) was outstanding, and my partner was pleased with his halibut (another special, $34). Service was polished and professional. Portion sizes are appropriately moderate rather than ridiculously generous. One of the drawbacks of this restaurant is that the tables are so close together that you'll be involuntarily participating in the conversations of guests at nearby tables, but on this Sunday evening in May, the restaurant was barely half full so that was not problematic.
My wife and I have never been disappointed dining here. The food is outstanding. We have brought friends and family and all have enjoyed the service and food. Be sure to make a reservation or you will be turned away as this restaurant is so popular among both locals and visitors.
I have dined all over the world in some outstanding restaurants. Passionfish is my favorite restaurant on the planet. We make a reservation for dinner every time we come to the Monterey Peninsula. We have been coming back since our first time more than 20 years ago, when the owners bought El Cocodrillo and later made it Passionfish.
The menu is creative and thoughtful. The execution is superb. The service is usually stellar, as is was this last time. The wine list is extensive and includes many unexpected pleasures. The wine prices are not much more than retail. The food prices are reasonable. The seafood is sustainable and delicious. Most recently the spicy fish stew, biscuits and scallops were excellent. The crab salad was very good except I thought the dressing on the greens was too acidic and harsh for the delicate crab. The scoop of chocolate sorbet was intense and amazing--for only $3!
Great food (Spoonable lamb shank & trout), nice wine, reasonable prices and excellent service. Highly recommend!
We had a really great dinner at passionfish. Based off open table reviews I booked passionfish an we were pleasntly surprised. Good food and wine
I love Passionfish for its responsible practice of selecting sustainable menu items . The dishes are well thought out with amazing flavors . All around great experience . One of my favorites in the Monterey Bay !
This is one of the best meals we have had in a while. The restaurant is setup very nice so the abient sound is very low. The wine and beer choices are excellent. The food started with the special asparagus salad. This was excellent with crispy procutto and a citrus dressing. We then had fish for main course. It was perfectly prepared. Top it off with the banana bread pudding.
A wine list to die for. Seating in the back is much more quiet.
The staff very friendly and attentive. Karen, my server, was great. She smiled throughout the night and was right there to assist.
I was traveling alone and dined alone. This is really not a big deal to me or anyone who wants a great meal is on vacation on their own. The host allowed me to choose my dinning spot with one minor snafu. She felt I would be comforted by sitting next to another lone diner for whatever reason I still can not understand.
Maybe, she felt sorry for my current "single" status but I did't. Not her position to pity me. I have done my time in bad marriages and wish for tranquility which includes dining alone. This I see as her own opinion not the establishment.
This restaurant came with rave reviews from a friend, but the unfortunately food was not very flavorful. Maybe we just went on an “off” night. Great service though, the waitress was really friendly.
Great wine list with even better pricing
Passion Fish is a tried and true restaurant that changes up its menu based on availability of ingredients and continues to offer the mainstays you can count on. My tablemates ordered the rock fish with a Thai slaw; I had the halibut special with vegetables (one of the veggie varieties had an offputting texture as if a non-edible portion had not been properly removed before cooking -- texture of an apple core -- but overall no biggie). We all shared a special asparagus salad and buttermilk bisquits to start. We also ordered a scoop of chef made ice cream -- chocolate and cheesecake flavors. All delicious. We rolled out of the restaurant very content. We have had our server in the past; she's certainly competent, but has a dour approach to service with little by way of engagement beyond the required pleasantries and expectations for an establishment competing at this price point. Reminds me of the song lyric, smile though your heart is breaking. Sigh.
We celebrated my Birthday at Passion Fish. The service and the food were excellent. I look forward to returning next year for my Birthday. This was a special dinner for me.
My husband and I enjoyed a delightful early evening at Passionfish for our Anniversary dinner. We could not have been more pleased with our experience. The next time we make the special trip to Pacific Grove (or anywhere in the vicinity) Passionfish will be the first restaurant we hope to visit. We are thankful for their effort and time in making our Anniversary pleasantly memorable.
Always a favorite when we are in Monterey. Excellent service, great seafood, and a stellar wine list make for an excellent dining out.
We had to change our reservation from 6:45 to 7:30 and needed to add one more person and they were very accommodating! The food is always excellent!
This was perhaps our 6th visit to PassionFish, and it NEVER disappoints! The sustainable seafood is always fresh, exquisitely prepared and presented, and the wine list is so affordable you won't believe it!
One of our favorites in the Monterey Bay Area. Good food, good ambiance with a good wine menu. It's also pretty close to the Aquarium if you are visiting the area. A bit of a hidden gem.
Love this restaurant. Every time I have dined, the food is some of the best I have had and the wait staff is impeccable.
We always visit passionfish twice when we are in the Monterey area The restaurant never fails to deliver an outstanding and memorable meal.
Simple, elegant, wonderful meal. . Will be going again and again
Wonderful experience. The food is delicious. Very good fish entrees and lovely combination of flavors. The staff are professional and friendly.
Always start with the homemade biscuit....
Great wine list, fairly priced...Arctic Char is such a joy to consume as well as the spicy fish stew. Finishing off with the bread pudding with banana ice cream makes for an almost perfect dining experience. You can just tell the care and thought that goes into every item on the menu.
The flavors and food are always exceptional. One of all time favorites in Pacific Grove.
Great food and service and wine
Took my lady (and our 4-year-old for) there for her birthday. The whole experience was outstanding. Great food, service, everything.
Excellent food. Our server was a bit sensitive. I have asked about a wine that my fiancée regularly visit and she had told me it’s located in the Santa Lucia highlands. I said no actually that’s where the grapes come from. I guess I insulted her, I did attempt to apologize but she was stand offish for the rest of the night. The rockfish was to die for though!
The service was friendly and professional. The food was outstanding. We’ve already recommended it to several people.
The food was superb. We had the black bean goat cheese fritters. For entrees our party had the duck, rock fish, and Arctic char; all were slurped up. Our server was average, nothing over-the-top, but friendly. We usually stop here when we visit Monterey and it is always a positive experience.
Stopped overnight on a journey home from Northern Cal so we could have dinner at Passion Fish again. It was our third visit (we live about 3 hours south of Pacific Grove). Once again, it did not disappoint. The seafood is wonderful. It was also our wedding anniversary and the staff greeted us with anniversary wishes, gave us a nice corner table, and helped make the evening even more special. The only downside was a large, noisy birthday party on the other side of the dining room. Noise wasn't an issue on our two previous visits.
The food and service were wonderful as usual! It is always a treat to eat here. I must admit that I miss the salad with chutney that they served for years but no longer have. The substitute missed the mark for my palette and my husband's. Overall it was a great meal!
It’s our tradition to eat at Passionfish each spring with good friends. The Rockfish was grilled to perfection, light and clean. The jicama mint salad was the perfect compliment to the fish. It definitely had a surprising spicy kick to it, but I enjoyed that. The crispy rice was excellent. The mint & espresso pie dessert was a great finale.
The menu here features a fine array of fish dishes which were very nicely presented and well thought-out. As with most good places to eat, you enjoy 'choice'. You spend time choosing the dishes you'd like to eat and the wines you'd like to drink (and there is an excellent selection of wines to choose from here). But, you don't get to choose the music which, in this case, was an excruciating selection of nails-on-chalkboard stuff played through screechy ceiling speakers. Posh places don't need noise of this sort. I'm sure the folk that visit here have enough to talk about and don't just stare into middle distance as they may do at a Denny's.
It was also a temperate day. One when you'd wear something woolly. So, why they felt a need to blast diners with cold air-con is beyond me. Maybe the staff get too warm. You'd think that, having a lot of staff, would make for great attentive service. Sadly, here they hover leaving only the charming bus boys to bring things. Perhaps the waiters were too hot or too cold or just too tuned in to the awful music. Other than that, we thought this a grand addition to Monterey Peninsula dining.
