Passage to India - Bethesda
Charbroiled giant sea scallops
I happened across Passage about 6 years ago and I've been going back regularly ever since. It's one of the old line restaurants in Bethesda but consistently excellent. I've never had a single item on the menu (and I've cut a fairly wide swath through the menu) that was anything less than very good. Just about everything has been excellent. The atmosphere is more on the formal side and the dining room quiet. While the wine list is on the short side, there are a number of choices that go well with Indian food. And the choices for vegetarians are very well represented.
Maybe it’s covid, but we waited about 20 minutes to place an order. And then it took another 45 minutes for the food to arrive. Never was asked for a drink order. The food was ok but not special. Disappointing
Love this restaurant! The best food and beautiful setting!!!!
Such a delicious dinner and will be a new tradition. Ambience, food, service and value are all A+. Where else can you get such a variety of Indian cuisines??
We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Passages of India--everything we chose was prepared expertly and tasted good. The service was outstanding but not intrusive. Any questions we had about specific dishes were patiently answered. I couldn't resist the tandoori lamb chops!
Outstanding food and service in a beautiful, authentic setting.
The ambience was very good. The place is nicely decorated, and quiet. The service was great. We loved it.
The food was good and tasty. The cuisine is traditional North Indian; not innovative. One entree is good for two people. However, the salad served with entrees could be better. Thickly diced carrots should be replaced with cucumber and sliced cherry tomatoes; they don't jive well with tender lettuce.
Passage to India is a great restaurant, whether for lunch or dinner. Attentive staff offer a wide variety of generous portions in a quiet, cozy, and well-decorated setting.
The single most civilized restaurant in the entire DC-Maryland-Virginia region. Quiet enough to hear one's table-mates; exquisite decor; the best Indian cuisine outside of India; perfect service.
Wonderful variety of food. Delicious, reasonably-priced, brunch of three courses for $14.95.

Wonderful service and food. A real treat to enjoy this long time, authentic restaurant in the neighborhood.
Passage to India was one of my favorite places. I am not sure if the pandemic caused the slide or what. But it took more than 90 mins for us to get our entrees served after ordering. A vegetarian dish was supposed to be a mix of veggies and turned out to be all potato and peas. The lamb dish was served with either overcooked or just tough pieces of lamb. Hugely disappointing. I could see they were much more concerned with the take out orders than with the people dining in. The table across from us was overheard to say that their food took 2 hours. I would have walked out by then.
Excellent food, great service, easy parking. Highly recommended!
Passage is one of only three restaurants in the area to which I go regularly. It is consistently very good in all respects. The ambiance is the best in Montgomery County. The only changes I would offer would be a better list of wines by the glass and the availability of espresso.
Delicious Indian food.
Can highly recommend it!
Excellent restaurant with excellent food. I highly recommend Passage to India.
Always delicious and staff wonderful!! Food tasty and served hot, couldn't be better!
Spicy, spicy, spicy, but oh so delicious. Pleasant restaurant serving yummy Indian food. Lamb Vindaloo, Tandoori shrimp, eggplant, chicken in mint sauce….all spicy yummy. Rice helps cool the palate. I’m sure you could ask for the spicyness to be toned down…..or have a nice cool dessert. We opted for ice cream.
Great dishes. We loved everything by we got. The okra was excellent! Rogan Josh also very good. Had a little kick! Very kind service staff. A little pricey but a lovely meal.
Very enjoyable dinner. Best chicken tikka ever. Well-paced service.
I try to get to this restaurant once per year, and they are great. Always a nice quiet experience with good food.
Family get together
Must visit place. Delicious food and great ambience.
We had a wonderful experience at Passage to India. The food was absolutely superb with beautiful presentation. Our server was most pleasant and very attentive to our needs. We are looking forward to our next visit.
One of the best Sunday brunches I’ve had in a very long time. Really an impressively peaceful, delicious, and well priced meal.
Great food, service and atmosphere. It’s a small intimate setting. They have a mostly older loyal crowd who come there for the food and quiet. I think we were a bit lively for the others. But no one seemed to mind too much. We had a great time with our friends.
Delicious! Quiet and staff was amazing! Will be back!
Food was terrific !!!!
It is a very pleasant restaurant. However, note that they close at 9:30. We arrived at 6:30 mid-week and the restaurant was already pretty busy. So, I guess others knew. Our waitress was wonderful and gave us a nice break between courses but then we and others were asked to leave. The menu is interesting. Unfortunately, nothing we ordered was outstanding. I would go again and order other items.
Great food quiet setting with friend
Exemplary fine Indian cuisine with truly distinctive flavors, nuances, and character with the assertive spiciness (upon request) to amplify the experience. The signature Goat Curry is lively with tomato, clove, black cardamom, and cinnamon as well as a spectrum of textures, while the Tandoori Chicken is smoky, juicy, and savory (even better specially tailor-made spicy)! Their Pulao (Rice) is standout as is the Dal Makhani (Black Lentil)! Their exceptional service matches the elegance and class of the beautiful ambiance. Passage to India is easily one of the best restaurants regardless of cuisine style, certainly the best in Bethesda!
My favorite restaurant in Bethesda. I'm so glad it made it through covid
The food, representing the 4 geographical parts of India, is excellent. We were just there for my wife's birthday, since it is her favorite restaurant in the DC area.
As always, amazing food and the most gracious service.
always great quality indian food.
Fantastic food and service! Lovely ambiance and place, just delicious! Been several times and always recommend!
Passage to India was just as we remembered from the last time we ate there, just prior to the pandemic closure. The elegant dining room and capable service were a welcome change from eating take-out. My tandoori salmon was perfectly done, and my husband's vindaloo authentically spicy. The menu is divided among the culinary traditions of India's regions, as well as specialties from the tandoor, so there is something for everyone.
Food is very well made and delicious! I especially LOVE the decoration. Highly recommend this restaurant!
