About Paragon at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa
Paragon at the Claremont in Berkeley is a neighborhood gastropub that serves craft beers, specialty cocktails, unique wines and a number of amazing, ingredient-driven dishes.
If you just want a small bite to eat while enjoying a brew at Paragon, order the sweet and spicy nuts. The Paragon mac and cheese is also incredible. Its made with rosemary and white cheddar. Youll also want to try the pistachio tart; it has a well-deserved reputation thanks to the cream cheese, shallot and caviar used. For something more substantial, the fried chicken is easy to recommend. Otherwise, the fish and chips are both delicious and fitting for the pub-like dcor.

Paragon at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa Ratings and Reviews
Great view and atmosphere,, but food and drinks are overpriced. Flat iron steak for $32 was tasty but very small, cheeseburger was $19, bar drink (rum and coke) was $11 and a inexpensive glass of wine was $12 from a $10 bottle of wine (retail). We will go back because it is a wonderful spot, but be prepared that you are going to pay for the view.
The service was horrible . My party waited at least 10mns for acknowledgement . The Restaurant Greeter was horrible . She had no welcome greeting , sat my party in a corner with minimal light. The lighting was so bad that we had to use our phone light to see menu. My party waited at least 15mns for water . The food server was horrible. The Restaurant was not busy. She spent the major part of her time laughing with fellow employees. At the end of are terrible experience we needed to ask for are check. I would never reccomend this restaurant to anyone 10 thumbs down! The food was average!
the food is mediocre at best, I ordered the crab sandwich. Sandwich arrived looking as boring as possible. It was a sad sandwich which a 5 year old could of made better. The waiter was so flat, bored and just going thru the motions, no smile, no thank you, he put the plates on the table with his head turned and already walking away.
Good service is expected, good food a minimum. If it wasn't for the view I wouldn't recommend this to anyone
We had dinner here on 5/30 with 8 people. The service was VERY SLOW. Other than that it was pretty good. The live music was nice. Everyone seemed to enjoy the raw oysters, the cheese plate was very good especially the apricot spread, the crab salad was yummy, the asparagus soup with goat cheese was yummy, the buratta was yummy, the guys enjoyed their burgers, everyone seemed to enjoy the chipwich dessert, I ordered the dessert trio which wasn't very good.
I took a friend here for her birthday. Lunch on the outside deck was delightful. We had a very nice view of the bay, it started out foggy but the heaters kept us warm and by 1:00 the sun was shinning brightly. The Birthday girl had the hamberger with garlic fries. All three of us had to taste them. Recommend you try them if you otprder a sandwich. I had the spinich and chicken salad. The serving of chicken was generous and the dressing was light. In my opinion a perfect lunch salad. My other guest had the spring salad with chicken added. The chicken was a large piece of breast meat and it came with the most tender peas and a lemon vinegrette dressing. She was very happy with her choice. For desert we shared the bread pudding. I had mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday and they also brought a dish of ice cream with a white chocolate Happy Birthday message on it. All in all a great place to celebrate a birthday! We will do this again.
I recently brought 8 of my best friends for lunch at the Paragon in the Claremont Hotel, Berkeley. We were all very impressed with the atmosphere, service, and food. Although it was a cloudy day, one could see the potential of having a terrific view of the Bay and SF in the background. Our server was very attentive without being overbearing, glasses were filled, utensils supplied, needs met. I recommend the Paragon as a great place to dine with friends or for a romantic tete-a-tete. Our group photos attest to the fact that "a grand time was had by all."
It's near my house and parking is safe and abundant. The food seems to get better and better. We had shrimp and grits that were as good as any I've had in the South and that's saying a lot!!! I hope they keep that on the menu...as is. It's perfection.
Plus, the Claremont is such a beautiful property. Going there is always a treat.
Enjoyed a special night out for our daughter's 13th birthday. The staff was accommodating and went the extra mile to make it a special evening. From the well chosen table with a great view, to attentive service, it was a night she won't forget.
We loved all of our dinner choices - the salmon with peas was terrific!
We went for lunch after our son's graduation from Cal and had an excellent server, Hector. The experience was prefect and we loved the new menu--especially the mac and cheese--to die for! It was a great experience and the service was wonderful. The day was topped off by meeting Dustin Hoffman in the bar area!!!
We arrived for our reservation and received no smile, no welcome, no friendly attitudes whatsoever. We were with our two kids, ages 3 and 5, and I assumed it was because the snooty 20 year old hosts were not fans of children. But then our sever was equally un-smiley, equally inattentive, and seemed to have no investment in providing service. I had to get up to get straws for my kids to drink their orange juice after waiting 10 minutes and watching our server do everything but get the straws we requested. Then later, I had to get up to get water for our table after everyone had long finished their drinks and we were sitting outside in the sun and receiving NO SERVICE. It's a shame that such a lovely location that would be a very nice place to spend a couple hours on a sunny day is ruined by bad attitudes.
Server was marvelous and added her special touch to the special occasion: magical! First time patrons and not disappointed. Menu included something for foodies, vegetarians, and those needing a hamburger! View awesome from throughout the restaurant, not only on the patio. Chose the Claremont Hotel venue because it will be there as a place to remember the prom, but the experience was more than could be imagined. We had a night to remember.
The food was ok, but the service was beyond terrible. There was absolutely no reason for a reservation because we got there early sat at a very small table in the bar, and after waiting 30 min. Past our reservation time,we were told we had two option. 1) eat at the table we were at... I don't think it cold fit two setting and side dishes,so that was a no go. 2) share a table with a bunch of other people we didn't know.... My husband and I were staying at the Claremont and we're looking forward to a quiet dinner after closing night of the play in which he had the lead!! We actually had to get the manager, who was not willing to help us until we asked for hotel manager, and miraculously we got a private table with a spectacular view.... 1 hour after our actual reserved time. The waiter was not nice, very errogant.
came here with my fiancé for valentine's day at 5:30. 3 course prix fixe menu was inspired, if not just a little on the pricey side—$65—given portion sizes. delicious flavors and nice presentations. we were seated in the room just off the main dining room, which was appreciated, as the bar area had several boisterous people for happy hour (?), well, getting happy. service, especially care to accommodate a non-dairy diet was attentive. we timed this to catch the sunset, which was stellar. the claremont offers a great view while dining.
I keep going back to Paragon every six months or so because the view is so spectacular and the food is pretty good. But, ugh, the service is terrible. Really terrible. I was hoping after the Fairmont group bought the Claremont, things would improve, but no. Couldn't get a drink at the bar, slow service all around, and a bill that had extra charges on it for food we hadn't ordered.
Oh, well, it was a wonderful sunny afternoon.
We loved our dinner, which was the hamburger and the steak. They were both very tasty.
The cheese board was OK, although I thought that the crustini was a little bit too crisp.
Our drinks were mixed and had plenty of alcohol in them. We were celebrating our anniversary, and so our waiter brought us a beautiful raspberry chocolate decadent desert on the house, which I thought was a very nice touch. All in all, we had a great experience with a beautiful view.
Since my wedding was at the Claremont, I am naturally extremely fond of the place.
Sadly, the service in the Paragon is lacking. We had to chase down most of the servers,
who seemed to be enjoying each other rather than tending to the patrons. Had the server
returned he could have sold us more drinks, small plates and dessert.
AND this was my birthday night-so even more disappointing.
I've been to the Paragon about 4-5 times with only slightly varying experiences. The view is spectacular, and if you're looking for an upscale venue that is bound to be crowded, it's got all that. The problem is that we've rarely gotten what I would call excellent service. By and large, the staff seem potentially overworked -- smiling doesn't come easy, they visit the table with less frequency than they should, and when asked for accommodations they ... accommodate, but not without making you feel like you've done something wrong. This past weekend we were there with a baby and they seated us in a wing of the restaurant far (far!) from the action, and needlessly so, since there were multiple open tables that could have accommodated our party. It felt like we were being sent to baby prison.
On our way to the theater a friend and I stopped off for a burger and mojito and to enjoy the view. The view was beautiful, the mojitoes good, but we were treated like poor relatives. First our table was not ready so we were shuffled off to a cold corner, then we could not get anyone's attention when we saw others being seated in the dining area. Finally I got up and went up to the reception desk where, not the hostess but a kind waiter, helped us to find a table for dinner. The service in that spot was excellent, but the hostess needs an attitude adjustment.
We had a great time at Paragon. Great food, great service, elegant facility. It was a joy to dine with people with manners. No screaming children, no rude loud mouths, no people playing with their cell phones, just calm, cool and collected diners and employees. We dined at sunset and enjoyed the lovely view. It was quiet and introspective and so relaxing and enjoyable. No blaring music, just happy, well mannered patrons, as it should be! Our server, Che, was wonderfully attentive, accurate and patient (one in our party was hard of hearing) he was always polite and never seemed rushed or distracted. Serivice as it should be! We'll be back.
Overall we were very happy with our dining experience. In the beginning it was very loud but as the evening went on the noise reduced and became much more enjoyable. Also, the service in the beginning was slow but like the noise got better as the evening progressed. The food and drinks were delicious. We will definitely come back.
Menu selection is not ample, but is adequate. Good variety.
Skip the desert - nothing special.
We dined with children and the server offered to fake the mac and cheese that they didn't eat off the check. He was also very attentive overall. Five stars for service.
Paragon has become my "go to" place when entertaining out of town guests or for grabbing a bite with friends or family. The view is great, the food is great, and usually the service is great. And if the weather is tolerable, you can sit out on the deck with views of the bay and SF, which is a big plus. Not too many other places can offer this!
Wow, the food has gotten so much "wider" in selection and taste! For lunch I had grits and shrimp with shrimp sauce-I was in heaven! Also a kale salad which wasn't "crunchy", more like lettuce leaves.
A truly vibrant lunch which really impressed me! Elliot was our server and he couldn't have been more professional-unlike many servers, he didn't hoverby the table and ask how our meal was a dozen times!
Really, can you tell? I am truly impressed!
