Pappo Ratings and Reviews
Faced with taking a visitor out to a good local restaurant we stayed home in Alameda and chose Pappo's. The specials that night involved a grilled octopus appetizer and a duck dish - both delicious. The duck was especially tender and flavorful. We were also really happy with the cocktails.
Pappo is always doing something great with local ingredients - and you don't have to drive into Oakland!
hard to choose between all the delicioius choices. The tuna tartare was a very generous serving. I tasted my husband's risotto which was done perfectly and lots of flavor. my gnocchi was good but the tomato sauce overpowered the dish. Will definitely be back.
Menu seemed small but food was great. Appetizer pork ribs were delicious. Gnocchi was served with a warm yummy sauce and lots of good veggies. Filet Mignon was perfect and served with tasty garlic french fries.
Busy night as we waited almost an hour for our appetizer. Waitress and hostess and water guy were very attentive.
My wife and I had a date night and were treated to a wonderful culinary experience. I had the best pork chop that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. My wife had the pappardelle with cream truffle sauce and butternut squash that was outstanding. Do not pass this place up, great food and wonderful service.
Everything was great! We were pleasantly surprised to have our favorite sever, Fay :) Can I suggest cushions for the chairs? You have them for the bench seats. Those chairs are not very comfy :/ It would be nice to see the menu change a little more often but that does not keep us from coming back :)
I have only eaten there three times, but it was great all three times. Last night I had the special - duck dipped in waffle batter and fried. How can one go wrong with that? It was crunchy, sweet, and juicy. My wife had the chicken sandwich which she enjoyed.
A great local and special restaurant. Chef John creates delicious, seasonal menus and the quality is consistent. The duck dishes are great, as is the salmon, flat iron steak and burger. Too many to list. You must try it! The new addition of special cocktails is nice. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. A GREAT 'go to' favorite of mine!
I have been a customer of papo's since it first opened. It has always been consistent and delivered high-quality well-prepared too. Something has definitely changed as evidenced by this last visit. The food was not very good and the delivery was poorly timed. I noticed for a Friday night that the place was only half full, which would have not been the case only 3 months ago. Perhaps others have noticed what I did and that is Chef John has either moved on or is no longer creating the magic that used to be his signature.
The caesar salad was AMAZING!!!!! I loved that they substituted Filet Minon for their normal flat iron steak for the evening, it was a wonderful upgrade! The waiter was especially pleasant and attentive and had great recommendations! Will be returning when we are in town next!
Arrived 5 minutes late but seated promptly after checking in with the friendly hostess. Service was good, very helpful with the menu. Cocktails were in point. Food was served timely and line great. Flavor was average but not bad and better than most. My date and I were able to hold a conversation which was nice, and we shut the place down. Wish it would stay open later but I get it. It's Alameda. I do most of my dining in SF where it's open later. Overall I'd return:)
Pappo is consistently good and service is always friendly. Most recently, there was a mistake on one of our meals (it happens). After a bit of a wait, they brought out a new one and it was wrong again. I would've expected them to comp the meal or offer a free glass of wine or dessert or something. They apologized, but I think something more was in order for two mess ups.
How was Pappo?
Fantastic as usual. My spouse and I try to visit at least once a month, usually twice. Try the pan seared scallops on a bed of turnip puree! Melts in your mouth.
Tuna Tartar with home made potato chips, very very tasty.
However the highlight of our meals is the warm and efficient staff that John has in place.
Can't wait to go back again.
Food and service at Pappo are great as is the décor. I feel the food is a little over priced but a nice treat on occasion. It does get quite noisy when the place is full but it's lively and fun. I had the zucchini spaghetti for the second time and it's delicious!
We went on a Thursday night, and it was pretty full by 7pm. The food was quite tasty, even if you are dieting...and if you are not dieting, it's tasty then too! I had a black cod dish that was a generous piece of fish, perfectly cooked. Our waitress told me that they usually cook it medium rare, and I asked for medium, and received what I asked for, the fish was perfectly moist.
We had wonderful, thoughtful servers.
I have eaten at Pappo's quite a few times. I was a little disappointed this time. The food was still very good, but there seemed to be fewer choices, with some previous more creative options possibly being replaced by burgers and chicken sandwiches and the like.
We had tickets to see _Our Town_ at the Altarena Theater, so we had dinner before the show. I had the crispy skinned duck. It was great. I am a fan of dark turkey meat, so the fact that the duck was a leg and a thigh was perfect for me. It was like a really juicy turkey with crunchy skin. If I could have ordered an extra plate of skin, I would have done so. :-) My wife had the chicken sandwich with fries which she also loved. We finished off with a flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with her recommendations. "Our Town" turned out not to be our favorite play, so our meal was the highlight of the evening. We will go back.
We have contemplated coming here for years as Alameda locals but they only served beer and wine. On Saturday morning we decided to give it a try after reviewing the menu so I made a reservation. We were seated promptly and to our surprise, they now have a full bar!!! the food was very good and everything was very fresh! Our waitress Fay was amazing!! They were a few servers down but she was always attentive and very nice. We will definitely return!!! :)
