Once again a fabulous meal. Pappo’s is so
Consistently good as is the service
Great food and nice service... Honestly the food is always excellent here
This restaurant is so lovely. The market dinner is always delicious, unique, beautifully prepared.
This restaurant is worth the trip to Alameda. Food is excellent and very well-prepared. Wine list was varied and went very well with the food. Wait staff was friendly and attentive, responding to many special requests by everyone (lemon, extra cheese)
A great combination of a neighborhood gem, and good value foodie friendly cozy place. The location off Park Blvd at Central in Alameda makes it great for people watching, strolling before or after or catch a movie across the street. The food and wine list are always excellent and rotate just frequently enough to keep diners interested on multiple visits. The service is above expectations with pace of food service and knowledge of the menu and wine list by all wait staff reliable and professional. Kudos to our waitperson Julie on our last visit, great wine recommendations and accommodating some substitutions.
They were out of what I decided to order, I guess they could have mentioned it when they gave us the menu. I ended ordering my meal with a side salad, but it came with french fries. I sent it back and the salad was hastily thrown together with hardly any dressing.
We went here to celebrate an anniversary along with our adult daughter. We had not eaten here for many years despite being Alameda residents. The food (salads, main courses and desserts) , wine, and service were all excellent. We were glad we had reservations as the restaurant was packed. The weather was great so the front was open to the outside and we could enjoy the meal while enjoying the mild evening. While It is a little pricy for an average dinner out, we are happy to have rediscovered this local restaurant and will return for future special occasions.
We have been to Pappo dozens of times over the years and it never disappoints. But, Friday was better than ever. I had the best steak I think I've ever had. All of our meal was delicious. The service was excellent as always. This is just a great neighborhood restaurant that we are so fortunate to have here in our town. We love it!
Love it...the olives, pastas, wine. Yummy gnocchi and out-of-this-world mushroom soup this week!
As in the past, the food and cocktails were delicious; unique entrees and flavors. Very personable service although a bit slow (may have been due to a crowded Saturday night).
Pleasantly suprised! I was impressed by the quality/taste of the food as well as the portion sizes. Would definitely come back and recommend to family/friends.
This place is only a block or so from my place. I've been there a number of times. I'm always happy/satisfied when I leave. Great food and good service. I really enjoyed the roasted chicken last time I was there and that isn't usually my go-to dish but the staff recommended it and I will get it again!
Pappos was amazing. I had the NY strip with duck fat potatoes. It was amazingly flavorful paired with a very fruity cab. For desert, the bread pudding with vanilla gelato and caramel sauce. I can’t wait to go back for more.
Tuna tartare is generous and so good; halibut may have been just a bit overdone
Our server was very nice and accommodating. Our pastas were delicious and the ahi tuna appetizer was great! We definitely will come back as we really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere at Pappo.
I live in Alameda and have been to Pappo a handful of times. I am never disappointed. Food and wine are always good and the prices are in line with the overall experience.
Food was fabulous but very slow to come out. Our waitress was great, very friendly and helpful. The tables were too small for 4 people, perfect size for 2 people. Looking forward to going back soon & having the zucchini spaghetti again, it was amazing!
Great food, amazing service. It can get a bit loud which might not be for everyone, but we will be back!
Good food but the kitchen was slow for their preplanned market dinner. Service and ambiance was excellent.
Our server was charming, but was she ever slooooow. Seemed to have her head in the clouds, a little bit. At one point, I asked for the wine list and she strolled over to the Hostess station and grabbed one. Then she had a 10 minute conversation with the hostess. Lots of toe-tapping.
Food was solid. I had the rack of lamb. It was cooked perfectly. Wife had the zucchini noodles bolognese. She enjoyed her meal, too.
Cute place. I'll try it again.
consistently delicious, enjoyable dinner -- we'll look forward to future visits
Pappo is one of my top 2 alameda favorite restaurants. The food is healthy and delicious. The appetizers are sized to share and so tasty - we love the tuna tartare with house made potato chips. The wine choices are good even for single glasses.
The service as always was excellent. The ambiance is excellent I had the New York strip. New York cuts are usually tough and cutting isn't easy. This steak was so tough I had hard time cutting it. I believe the steak knife was dull because it was not to be cut. Suggest your steak knives be sharpened. My spouse's meal was excellent - Prawn dish.
We celebrated my daughter's 19th birthday at Pappo and had a terrific time! We were visiting from Boston so I googled reviews for a great place to eat and was not disappointed. The menu was fun, had some healthy options but did not lack flavor. The location and movie theater across the street made it even more fun for us. If ever in the area again, we would absolutely visit Pappo again. Thank you!
Located right across the street from the movie theatre, Pappo is very convenient for "dinner and a movie". The service is very good, there were 4 servers for a small room of 12 or 15 tables. The garlic shrimp plate was as good as I've had. The only downer was the bar selection, despite what looked like a full bar. I ordered a Kentucky Mule, but the server said she didn't think they had ginger beer (they don't) . I changed to a Greyhound, but, again, she said they didn't have grapefruit juice. I went back to bourbon, with 7 Up. You might not believe this, because I didn't, but they don't have 7 Up or Sprite. If you don't like to have a cocktail with your dinner, this is a fine place to eat. If you do, go somewhere else.
What can I say? I’m addicted to John’s Farmer’s Market dinners!! The value, sumptuous creativity and feeling like I’m the only diner in the world by the pampering staff makes it a regular for me!
Date night? This is a fine choice.
We sat at one of the the tables on the 'patio' so we could have that little European feel. Alameda did it's best to fulfill that part. The service was spot on. Our server presented to daily specials and answered questions with a smile, and never made us feel rushed. The wine list is a short one, however the selections are very nice mix of Italian and local wines. Craft beers and 'disco' drinks which are popular with the younger crowd have a fine representation as well. The food was great, my wife said the pork chop was the best she has ever had.... 'finally, someone know how to cook a pork chop' (this hurt me a little, fore I cook pork chops for her at least once a week...) I had the gnocchi, perfection as well. Make sure you keep room for desert too... our 'peach cobbler' topped the meal off with a star!
This is the 3rd time we have been to Pappo, and we will go back frequently, since we are in Alameda often. Every time the food has been excellent, and we love the casual, but elegant ambience.
Portions too small. Hamburger bland, over cooked not as good as Burger King!
Pappo surprised us by having upped their game over the past couple of years or so. We were quite happy with the menu (my husband was quite happy with his cocktails) -- all dishes came out of the kitchen looking and tasting fantastic. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a pleasant night out with good food, and a noise level low enough to hold a meaningful conversation.
Friendly, nice but casual restaurant with great wait staff and eclectic, delicious menu.
After dropping our daughter and friend off at a concert at the Oakland Colloseum, my husband and I were looking for a nearby date spot to spend a few hours. Our choice to drive ten minutes for a quaint dinner at Pappo turned out to be perfect. It's great that they accept reservations since we needed to get in and out in an hour and half. The location is also perfect for a movie afterward. The beautiful Art Deco Alameda Cinema is just across the street.
Aside from the convenient location, we were impressed by the service and quality of food. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and on top of their game. We ordered the anchovy stuffed olives as a starter. They are addictive ! with a crispy breading, warm, crunch, juicy, salty, goodness! They are a nice pairing with their well made Manhattans. I ordered the house specialty; home made gnocchi. It was prepared with fresh picked sweet organic corn and tomatoes, accompanied by delicious chunks of tender pancetta, (not too salty)in a delicate broth. The gnocchi is like perfect fresh potato pillows that melt in your mouth ... Yums! so delicately delicious! The portion was not overly generous yet was adequately satisfying. My husband ordered the burger which was cooked to order and tasted very fresh. With crispy garlic fries and avocado, it came to $19, the most we've ever paid for a burger and fries. Even considering quality and size, in my opinion, $19 is a bit steep.
Overall, I would recommend Pappo to friends for its service, quality of food and convenience to pair with a night at the movies.
Recommended by a friend with connections in Alameda, this was a solid success. We split one of each course and were never penalized for doing so, always fitted out with new flatware after each. Everything fresh, the flavors a fine fusion of tradition and invention in the Italian-French-Californian style. Waitstaff bordered on invasive, depending on how you like to play the game. Seats hard (just like Chez Panisse) and noise level over the top, when the place was full. The wine-list is good, but having the locally-made St. George Americano Bruto bitter to go with our perfect vanilla creme brûlée was fabulous. Very pleasant overall, and would recommend a later seating, like ours, to outlast the noise bit.
This is one of my "go to" places in downtown Alameda, near my home. It's great to combine with catching a film across the street at the Alameda Theatre. Always love the food. Great cocktails and wine, too. Especially love the Ahi Tuna Tartare as a starter; it is amazingly delicious.
The duck sugo on pappadelle is always wonderful. I enjoyed the zucchini spaghetti with garlic and olive oil, a bit of spicyness. The fried olives are a reliable starter. The food is local, delicious and reliably good.
Farmers Market Dinner—a essential treat for the week!!
Great restaurant! Our waitress was extremely attentive and had helpful recommendations. Everything we had was delicious! I would highly recommend this place to friends and family!
Never have been disappointed yet! John & crew are a local community Gem!!
Wonderful food, best Pork Chop ever.
Great place for a date, or to wow an out of town guest. It has a small and intimate boutique restaurant feel. Its obvious this is a place with a chef who loves what he does. They are always changing out the menu with fresh seasonal produce, but they love to include a dish that could convince you to step outside your comfort zone for something delicious. Our wait staff told us that duck is the specialty for the chef, and it did not disappoint. Ever cocktail and meal I've ever had here has be fantastic. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable with wine pairings as well.
