Pappo Ratings and Reviews
We had a very nice meal at Pappo. We started with a shared caesar salad which was very good and fresh. I had house made pappardelle pasta with bolognese which was very good, but had a little too much tomato taste for me. My wife had native halibut which she really liked a lot. We each had a glass of wine from a well curated list. Both of us had an affogatto for desert which were prepared at the table with house made vanilla gelato which was very good. I would recommend this restaurant.
The food was delicious and our server was friendly and efficient. The problem was how long it took to receive our food. We sat down for a 6:15 reservation and ordered a salad to share and wine. We did not receive the entree we planned to split until 7:20. It was a problem as we had to make an 8:00 show in Oakland so we had to ask for our entree to be packed to go. Our server apologized but no other concessions were made. The gnocchi was delicious but didn’t plan on eating it in the back of a cab.
Pappo has never failed to impress, in the dozen years I've lived in Alameda. On this occasion I was looking for the perfect little romantic spot to celebrate two years with the bf (and also impress him with Alameda's unexpected cuisine, since he is a SF native). ;-) It did the trick! We accidentally booked during Alameda Restaurant Week and were convinced by the diner next to us to try the duck (I'm usually not a fan, re: fattiness). It was delicious, tender, NOT fatty, and the only duck I've ever liked. Yes to Pappo!
Ribeye was tasty but was cold and served on cold plate. They did accommodate menu entree item changes for low carb alternative. Expensive “WAGyu” burger with bone marrow” $17 then you charged additional for cheese and anything else - while it was tasty the burger came to $20 with the extras and you just feel ripped off.
* Relatively easy to reserve a table
* Starters--esp. ALL of them!
* Tuna is amazeballs
* Mains (Salmon, Pork chop, Spareribs)
* Wine list is limited but curated by chef from private cellar around popular mains
* Desserts--not your grandma's bread pudding--it's even better! The nostalgic taste is there but with modern lightness and house-made sea salt Carmel
* Gelatos are delish, esp if you're an espresso fan
* Excellent capuccino
So, yeah, pretty much everything!
* Butternut soup was just so
* They're about to get a whole lot busier--may get hard to get into
I ordered from their restaurant week menu, and I think that was a good deal. The duck was very tasty, the flourless chocolate cake was very soft. My friend ordered from the a la carte menu because she wanted the salmon. I had a taste of that and was pleasantly surprised to find the skin crispy. How they were able to cook that without tearing the skin was beyond me. My friend said she would be coming back so she could order the duck. It was my first time there, and I definitely would be back, possibly for a special occasion.
Nice place, great staff. I called and told them I was running a litttle late and they understood and we didn’t lose our reservation or had to wait despite it being busy.
Food was ok. Shared the bolognese and short ribs with my wife. Tasty but for the amount paid I would like to have been blown away
My husband and I have never been to Alameda. So first of all, that was a lovely surprise - an neighborhood oasis among the hustle bustle of Oakland, CA. Pappo was a wonderful dining experience. The server was very helpful with locating dairy free options, and there were lots from which to choose. The food was delicious. I especially liked the mushroom soup--creamy, without any cream! The ambience was warm and inviting. I would definitely go back.
I would recommend to others your superb wait staff. They are excellent, energetic, fun and knowledgeable. The restaurant it did grow abit loud around 7:30ish on Saturday evening. The food was delicious; however, the price point extremely high for the volume of food serviced.
I ordered the 1 inch wide Halibut, 3 triangles of russets, 4 or so zucchini slices in a delicious bouillabaisse sauce. All mouth watering yet short to satisfy ....Not for the amount of food and certainly not for $29.00 a plate!
I saw your restaurant on Check Please. I took 3 others friends boosting about food and it's good reviews coming from the tasters.
Sadly, I will not return unless invited by others for a "friends night out". And at that time I would suggest a more affordable restaurant.
Thank you for asking my opinion. Please do something with the response. Vallorie
A great combination of a neighborhood gem, and good value foodie friendly cozy place. The location off Park Blvd at Central in Alameda makes it great for people watching, strolling before or after or catch a movie across the street. The food and wine list are always excellent and rotate just frequently enough to keep diners interested on multiple visits. The service is above expectations with pace of food service and knowledge of the menu and wine list by all wait staff reliable and professional. Kudos to our waitperson Julie on our last visit, great wine recommendations and accommodating some substitutions.
They were out of what I decided to order, I guess they could have mentioned it when they gave us the menu. I ended ordering my meal with a side salad, but it came with french fries. I sent it back and the salad was hastily thrown together with hardly any dressing.
We went here to celebrate an anniversary along with our adult daughter. We had not eaten here for many years despite being Alameda residents. The food (salads, main courses and desserts) , wine, and service were all excellent. We were glad we had reservations as the restaurant was packed. The weather was great so the front was open to the outside and we could enjoy the meal while enjoying the mild evening. While It is a little pricy for an average dinner out, we are happy to have rediscovered this local restaurant and will return for future special occasions.
We have been to Pappo dozens of times over the years and it never disappoints. But, Friday was better than ever. I had the best steak I think I've ever had. All of our meal was delicious. The service was excellent as always. This is just a great neighborhood restaurant that we are so fortunate to have here in our town. We love it!
This place is only a block or so from my place. I've been there a number of times. I'm always happy/satisfied when I leave. Great food and good service. I really enjoyed the roasted chicken last time I was there and that isn't usually my go-to dish but the staff recommended it and I will get it again!
