Papatzul Ratings and Reviews
Very promising happy hour. We looked at neighbors plates and decided to have just a main
course. This was a wise choice and we didn't need to worry about chips, etc. Our wait staff
attended to tables and taking orders. It was a rainy day, and found the humming.
I just had a large group dinner here for my bday and I cannot thank this place enough for making it such a great experience. The service was excellent. We loved the margaritas and the food- especially the fish tacos. Really loved this place for a laid back dinner with great food and drinks.
The entire experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The worst service I've ever experienced in my life-- from a waiter spilling red wine on my friend to my other friend having to reorder a tequila on the rocks 3 TIMES because they kept messing it up. Just getting our reserved table took forever, then getting waiter over to the table took centuries. Overall, I would never recommend or come back here. Order their fish tacos (the only great thing they have to offer, apparently) to go!
Great atmosphere and amazing food, especially the fish tacos and guacamole. The best part was that happy hour extends to 8pm (which is rare) and Margaritas are $6 and delicious. The only downside was the speed of bar service, it took over 20 minutes for us to get our first drink which was frustrating as it wasted precious happy hour time. Our food arrived very quickly though, so it all balanced out.
Terrible servìce as waiter spent his time texting instead of bringing water or refilling chips. No one checked on us after the food was brought to the table.
The restaurant was not busy but a table of 6 was so loud that we nearly had to shout to be heard.
The food was excellent though.
Our server never checked on us after bringing the food. The ceviche was obviously frozen shrimp that had gotten mushy and it tasted like they dumped cumin on it and salsa. I would have sent it back, had they even bothered to check on us. When the bus boy took our plates, he didn't even seem to notice that it was uneaten. When the waitress brought our check she wouldn't even make eye contact with me. Such a waste of money and time!
this restaurant has delicious food, the wait staff is great. But the people at the table next to us who I believe knew the owners or something were rude and overwhelming. They took a table for 5, had 7 people sitting there and one guy was actually leaning back on our table...with his arm on our table.
and they had no care about anyone else in restaurant.
great for them to have a good time, maybe get a private room next time
I went to Papatzul on Friday with my girlfriend and two folks from out of town who wanted to try some non-Tex-Mex Mexican. On that front, we got exactly what we were looking for. In some other regards the restaurant needed some work. But the food (or rather, certain dishes) were so good that I would definitely go back.
We started with the homemade guacamole with chips, which was both paltry and somewhat lackluster. It wasn't unfresh or anything that would turn you off, but it just wasn't special. However, everyone loved their main courses. Two of the four of us ordered the duck enchiladas in mole sauce, and we were both blown away. The mole was just the right combination of spice, smoke, and cocoa; the duck was well cooked and juicy; the cream and cheese complemented the mole beautifully' and the tortilla was firm rather than soggy. It was almost certainly the best mole dish I've had in New York, and an excellent and innovative dish by any metric.
The rest of the aspects of the meal couldn't live up to the duck enchiladas in mole sauce, but some were still good. The margaritas were small, but refreshing (I especially enjoyed the spicy jalapeño margarita, which was again just the right amount of spicy; not spectacular or the best margarita I've had in New York, but very good.). The service was friendly, but incredibly slow (despite the fact that there were plenty of empty tables). And since it was happy hour at the bar, the entire restaurant was loud (not impossibly so, but more than one would like if trying to maintain casual conversation). I also was a bit put off by the fact that the restaurant advertised happy hour specials, but failed to prominently note that it only applied to the bar.
Overall, a dish as creative and delicious as the mole inspires confidence that the rest of the menu has gems tucked away in it, too (and the mole itself would merit another visit). So definitely worth a try, but not the best in town.
Came with a bunch of friends for my birthday - we added guests at the very last minute and the staff was extremely accommodating. The drinks - especially anything with their smoked tequila - pack a punch and are absolutely delicious. The food is authentic, flavorful and will keep you ordering more. I always judge Mexican restaurants on their guac - it's fantastic.
Nothing to complain about. Our reservation was honored right on time, great table. Perfect service, friendly waitress.
Water glasses were constantly being re-filled...I like that...attentive staff.
Food was outstanding. We started with the delicious guacamole...YUM! I had the fish tacos, while my friends had the duck
enchilades in mole sauce. Not a crumb was left on any of our plates.
Will definitely return to Papatzul. Will also recommend to others.
Salad was so-so and not cheap. The Corn cakes with Chorizo were DRY. Duck enchiladas were overpowered by mole sauce. Little duck meat inside. Slow roasted pork also overpowered by sauce. Waitress couldn't have been slower yet only 2 tables had people. Won't go back again. Chipolte better and cheaper!!!!!
An unexpected find in SoHo. Unpretentious, excellent service and great food & unusual tequila and mescal drinks. Started with a pungent mescal, pomegranate and lime cocktail with a smoked chile powder rim. Salsas & chips excellent, as we're the enchiladas de huitlacoche in a salsa verde--perhaps the best enchiladas I've ever had. Duck enchiladas in a red sauce also extremely tasty. Would go back in a minute.y
