The name of the game here is the excellent food. We also enjoyed the festive (if loud) atmosphere.
This was my second time at Papatzul. The occasion this time was for my birthday, and there were about 3-4 other birthday celebrations at the same time. The food is delicious! The staff were very courteous. However I think it was a bit chaotic for both us and the restaurant having such a big group of about 14. Service was a little slower than ideal. I would recommend coming with a smaller group of people. But I definitely recommend the restaurant!
Laughably bad Mexican at a high price. They gave me melted cheese that quickly hardened calling it “queso dip”
amazing service great choices everyone knowledgeable caring and so pleasant ... it was a fantastic experience
If you are in SoHo looking for delicious Mexican cuisine, would recommend stopping into this place. Food was plenty, delicious, and savory. While the service was OK (asked for water multiple times, never came around to check on us, etc.), did not allow that to take away from the wonderful meal I had. Great atmosphere, vibes, music, and drink!
Amazing food, great service and extremely good value for money!
The sound level was reasonable but became too loud and was difficult to have a conversation.
Service got slow as it got busier. Enjoyed the food and would return if not crowded!
Great before Wooster theatre. Young crowd but they even made old guys like us feel welcome. Great margaritas. Not your typical Mexican menu; fresh well prepared food
We went for a birthday and have always liked it in the past but the food was even better than before. I highly suggest everyone stop here. Just amazing and authentic food.
Very promising happy hour. We looked at neighbors plates and decided to have just a main
course. This was a wise choice and we didn't need to worry about chips, etc. Our wait staff
attended to tables and taking orders. It was a rainy day, and found the humming.
Shocking!! Never again!!
Waited over 2 hours for food with no apology
I'm never disappointed with my time at Papatzul. Food and drinks are always spot on. Their carnitas and guacamole are THE BEST!!!!
Guacamole and margaritas were good. Otherwise food was very average and overpriced. Place is a bit dingy.
I just had a large group dinner here for my bday and I cannot thank this place enough for making it such a great experience. The service was excellent. We loved the margaritas and the food- especially the fish tacos. Really loved this place for a laid back dinner with great food and drinks.
Food and service exceeded expectations... It was a delightful evening.
The entire experience was nothing short of a nightmare. The worst service I've ever experienced in my life-- from a waiter spilling red wine on my friend to my other friend having to reorder a tequila on the rocks 3 TIMES because they kept messing it up. Just getting our reserved table took forever, then getting waiter over to the table took centuries. Overall, I would never recommend or come back here. Order their fish tacos (the only great thing they have to offer, apparently) to go!
Guacamole was excellent. But our main courses were really mediocre, felt like an upscale chipotle. Nothing is really memorable.
Food was great, drinks were great, price was great, service was not so great
Great atmosphere and amazing food, especially the fish tacos and guacamole. The best part was that happy hour extends to 8pm (which is rare) and Margaritas are $6 and delicious. The only downside was the speed of bar service, it took over 20 minutes for us to get our first drink which was frustrating as it wasted precious happy hour time. Our food arrived very quickly though, so it all balanced out.
always delicious, unpretentious and fun. i'm glad many don't know about this spot, since i can get a table anytime i want.
I loved the food, fresh, inventive. Great drink😎 And nice staff. Music...way too loud. Lighting, warm and cozy.
Service was great. Attentive and friendly. We were chatting long after we finished our meal, and did not feel rushed to leave. Food was delicious and authentic. Creative, tasty, and at a good price
Great Guacamole! Good size portion. Wait staff was very attentive! We would go back again. A Little "Hole In The Wall", with very good food!
great food and friendly efficient service. The margaritas are awesome and prices great!
Terrible servìce as waiter spent his time texting instead of bringing water or refilling chips. No one checked on us after the food was brought to the table.
The restaurant was not busy but a table of 6 was so loud that we nearly had to shout to be heard.
The food was excellent though.
Authentic Food, Great Ambiance, Terriffic Service
Good food but a really loud place. If you want to be able to easily hear the people sitting with you this is not the place.
The food is great but I couldn't enjoy the moment because is was super noisy.
Our server never checked on us after bringing the food. The ceviche was obviously frozen shrimp that had gotten mushy and it tasted like they dumped cumin on it and salsa. I would have sent it back, had they even bothered to check on us. When the bus boy took our plates, he didn't even seem to notice that it was uneaten. When the waitress brought our check she wouldn't even make eye contact with me. Such a waste of money and time!
The gauc and margs were very good, and the fish tacos great. Deff recommend for a girl's night!
this restaurant has delicious food, the wait staff is great. But the people at the table next to us who I believe knew the owners or something were rude and overwhelming. They took a table for 5, had 7 people sitting there and one guy was actually leaning back on our table...with his arm on our table.
and they had no care about anyone else in restaurant.
great for them to have a good time, maybe get a private room next time
I love Papatzul, especially the grilled fish tacos. This time I went with a group of friends and although I love the margaritas, they wanted vodka but they were out. None the less we made the most of it.
I went to Papatzul on Friday with my girlfriend and two folks from out of town who wanted to try some non-Tex-Mex Mexican. On that front, we got exactly what we were looking for. In some other regards the restaurant needed some work. But the food (or rather, certain dishes) were so good that I would definitely go back.
We started with the homemade guacamole with chips, which was both paltry and somewhat lackluster. It wasn't unfresh or anything that would turn you off, but it just wasn't special. However, everyone loved their main courses. Two of the four of us ordered the duck enchiladas in mole sauce, and we were both blown away. The mole was just the right combination of spice, smoke, and cocoa; the duck was well cooked and juicy; the cream and cheese complemented the mole beautifully' and the tortilla was firm rather than soggy. It was almost certainly the best mole dish I've had in New York, and an excellent and innovative dish by any metric.
The rest of the aspects of the meal couldn't live up to the duck enchiladas in mole sauce, but some were still good. The margaritas were small, but refreshing (I especially enjoyed the spicy jalapeño margarita, which was again just the right amount of spicy; not spectacular or the best margarita I've had in New York, but very good.). The service was friendly, but incredibly slow (despite the fact that there were plenty of empty tables). And since it was happy hour at the bar, the entire restaurant was loud (not impossibly so, but more than one would like if trying to maintain casual conversation). I also was a bit put off by the fact that the restaurant advertised happy hour specials, but failed to prominently note that it only applied to the bar.
Overall, a dish as creative and delicious as the mole inspires confidence that the rest of the menu has gems tucked away in it, too (and the mole itself would merit another visit). So definitely worth a try, but not the best in town.
This is a noisy room with music turned up too loud. The service and servers are very pleasant and attentive. Unfortunately, the food is only passable and expensive for what it is.
Menu could have more dishes but the ones they do have are pure authentiexican rich flavor and well prepared, presentation and portion size is great, a real unexpected gem!
Great selection of tequila/mescal for any type of margarita you might be able to dream up. But the food was really the winner here- delicious!
Even if you are not a vegetarian, there is really too much meat in the dishes. As such, only one person of our group of 6 could finish his dish. Service was good and people were friendly.
Loved the restaurant and location. Terrific food and I will go back!!
Came with a bunch of friends for my birthday - we added guests at the very last minute and the staff was extremely accommodating. The drinks - especially anything with their smoked tequila - pack a punch and are absolutely delicious. The food is authentic, flavorful and will keep you ordering more. I always judge Mexican restaurants on their guac - it's fantastic.
Nothing to complain about. Our reservation was honored right on time, great table. Perfect service, friendly waitress.
Water glasses were constantly being re-filled...I like that...attentive staff.
Food was outstanding. We started with the delicious guacamole...YUM! I had the fish tacos, while my friends had the duck
enchilades in mole sauce. Not a crumb was left on any of our plates.
Will definitely return to Papatzul. Will also recommend to others.
