PAON Restaurant & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
We came here for dinner while on vacation in Carlsbad on a Sunday evening. As it was Sunday, the restaurant was quiet, which worked out well for us. We had a lot of attention from our server, who actually went to Paon's wine store next door to get us wine options since my husband was ordering by the glass and nothing on the menu jumped out to him. The wines were outstanding, as was the food. My husband especially enjoyed the tuna/salmon tartare appetizer. Highly recommend for a nice meal.
Excellant, prompt service. A fine chef for sure. Nice ambiance. Probably one of the best short ribs outside of France. We are most fortunate to have Paon and Pamplemousse in North County. If I had my own personal trainer I would be at one or the other every couple of days I think.
A friend and I wanted to meet for Easter Sunday dinner. We were not disappointed when we went to Paon. The outside dining area is lovely, shaded, with greenery and an outdoor fireplace. The owner was most accommodating. The wine list was an oenophile's delight. I was disappointed that there were only three lamb ribs, but it was some of the best I have ever had. Everything was delightful. My friend was happy with her filet mignon. We shared a cannoli dessert, and loved it! I would be remiss if I did not mention the service. It was excellent. The young man who waited on our table was knowledgeable, thoughtful, and pleasant without being intrusive. We greatly enjoyed Paon. Although it was pricey, it was worth it! It is a gem!
I went here on a Saturday night with my wife for date night. We sat outside in the front patio and that was a good choice as the lighting was nice and it was relatively quiet compared to dining inside. I liked the set up in this area as the tables are nice and they made it look like a nice garden. We did sit for a while before our waiter came over to get a drink order, once he made contact he was pretty attentive after that. We order two martinis which were not very good, I would not recommend getting them again, the bartender put way too much vermouth in them. We ordered two salads which were excellent and then had the scallops and short ribs as our main course. Both were very tasty and well presented. This place is pricey.
This is undoubtedly the best restaurant in North SD County and one of the two best in the whole county. Service is impeccable, food is not adventurous but solid good offerings every time. I just had the best filet of my life here but all of the salads, starters and entrees are delicious. The desserts could use a bit more imagination. They are ok but could get a boost to go to extra special in keeping with everything else at Paon. Get a table on the patio where it is romantic and very pleasant. I thoroughly recommend this place. If you want to spend a bit less, the bar menu is just as fabulous.
Restaurant dining room provides a pleasant atmosphere with a level of privacy when out with someone for a special evening. The service staff provides attention without being intrusive. Separately, the bar is very nice when dinning solo. The cliental are nice and the owners and staff will make you feel welcome.
We would highly recommend Paon's for it's excellent food (we had the scallops and the pheasant) and Service. Wine list is a bit pricey but the selections fit the menu well. No sound partition between the bar and the eating area which made conversation a bit of a challenge during happy hour. Will visit again with a later reservation.
While attending a wedding in Carlsbad we experienced the most delightful dining experience one could experience, The Paon restaurant. From start to finish, perfection. I had the Halibut, which I consider a most difficult entree to prepare properly, and my partner the lamb. I have never before written a review of this sort, however I was so impressed, I want to share our experience with anyone who enjoys very good food.
We were really looking forward to our dinner here. On the bright side, they were gracious in letting our party arrive late (we called ahead). The wine list was balanced, extensive and moderately priced. The food had multiple ups and downs. The service was the real killer. We would have loved to try a few more bottles or other dishes, but couldn't get our server back to the table. This was a constant annoyance throughout the entire experience.
We dined here for our 30th anniversary. The food was excellent as was the service. It is fairly pricey which is why we will only go occasionally. If you go, try the pheasant. Such a treat.
See the menu online. There are always off menu specials as well.
A friend told me the menu in the bar area is more affordable. Still excellent food, just a more limited selection.
I went to Paon for the first time to celebrate my 50th birthday. Love the fact that I could bring my own special bottle of wine. The service and food were outstanding. The server was highly knowledgeable about the food and made very good recommendations. The pace of the meal was just right. Next time I would come and sit outside because the patio is just lovely!
Thank you Paon for making my 50th birthday a wonderful experience!!
Paon restaurant, located in the heart of Carlsbad village, is outstanding. The owners have created an upscale restaurant with superb service and excellent food. We dined there recently and even came back after the show for dessert and coffee.
Paon also features a wine tasting room hidden in the back of its restaurant. Anyone who enjoys wines should add Paon's wine room to their "must visit" list.
Steve, the owner is on-site and takes personal care of each of his guests. Paon's wait staff are knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and always have good recommendations for wines with dinner. The sea bass was outstanding as was the duck. Try it!
We went there for the first time and absolutely loved every thing about the place. The warmth of the decor and setup, the friendliness of the staff, the wait staff and their impeccable service, and then there's the food! This was THE best meal we've had in a while. We enjoyed all the different flavors and the presentations were lovely. Thanks for making our vacation in Carlsbad complete!
I have to say I was disappointed in my meal. I have allergies to dairy and gluten. The wait staff seemed very accommodating in the ability to bring me a dish free from my allergies however when I got my plate it had a cream sauce. Luckily we noticed it and had it sent back. As someone with food allergies this is not the best situation when your table has their food in front of you and out of respect want to wait for yours to come before they eat. When my plate returned it was very dry and to be honest I only ate about half which is rare for me. I know there are many ways to make fish moist and sauces without allergens so for this reason I'm disappointed.
I have dined at Paon on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The chef tailors the menu to what is in season and everything is always well prepared and beautifully presented. One of my favorite dishes is roasted pheasant with truffle risotto. The risotto is so good, it could stand on its own as an entre. On another visit I had the pan roasted sea bass with a beurre blanc sauce that was very moist with a crispy skin. My husband has enjoyed their venison and lamb dishes. Paon offers a good selection of dishes for vegetarians. Paon has a wine store next door so you can purchase wine from there and bring it to the restaurant. They have a special pricing structure and corkage fees if you decide to do that. Desserts are good too.
On a return trip to Carlsbad, we made it a point to have dinner at Paon. It was equally as delicious as our first visit. We began with the escargot - perfectly prepared and oh, so yummy and garlicky. Paon serves the escargot in the shells, so be prepared for that if you're used to getting them sans shell. The pheasant didn't disappoint either. Beautifully presented atop truffle risotto with wild mushrooms. Extremely flavorful. I debated between the lamb & rib eye steak. The steak was perfectly prepared and flavorful, but a few bites were a little too fatty and chewy. I would still recommend it. We enjoyed the meal with a bottle of Malbec. Too full for dessert - maybe next time!! All of the staff was friendly; attentive but not hovering.
This was our first time eating at this restaurant. We celebrated our 43rd Anniversary (Feb. 13) and it was a delightful place. We sat outside and the heat lamps provided warmth and it was very quiet -- so nice to be able to converse without shouting across the table.
The service was great: an attentive, but not hovering, waiter.
My pear salad was tasty and my rack of lamb was perfectly done. We will be back but, because it is a bit pricey, it will be for a special occasion.
What a wasted night of dining at this very over rated restaurant. If its an example of some of the best French food in the area, the reviewers do not know anything about French food or fine dining. Not only was the food bad, the seating with the table legs under the table was very uncomfortable to sit with no leg room.
We have been here many times and it is always excellent. This time we had mussels, "delish" , escargot, yumm with lots of garlic and shared the seared tuna. I had eaten the tuna before and it was equally as good as the first time. Amazing how they can cook it perfectly each time. We'll be back soon!
Don't forget to check out their wine store, great bottles from small wineries!
We were celebrating a special family birthday. The food, service, ambience was wonderful. So many delicious menu choices, it was hard to decide. Everyone had something different and we were all thrilled. The duck was crispy and delicious. The roasted pheasant was delicious. Our waiter was hospitable and friendly. We will certainly be back! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Amazing place! Great food, imaginative and complete menu.
Appetizing specials that make use of fresh ingredients.
Service is elegant but not stuffy.
Really, really love this place, especially for the price.
You won't get out without spending some money, but the wine and the food are more than fair in the price department, especially given the large portions.
No need to travel to Napa, we have Paon right here in Carlsbad. Quality well-prepared food, generous portions, well-priced and served in a comfortable setting. Service is attentive and knowledgeable, never snooty. Great wine selection at good prices. Our dinners were fish, beef and seafood selections and they were all expertly prepared. The sea bass was delicate, flavorful with perfectly crisped skin and soft inside. Fresh veggies. No heavy sauce or cream, just great flavors. Can't wait to go there again.
Service was cool and very efficient. We arrived 1/2 hour before the dinner hour and was greeted, "We are not ready yet." versus a preferred greeting, "Welcome, please have a look at the wine cave in the back or have a drink here at the front bar." I felt a bit sad for our guests as it was their first time. They were impressed with the cave, where we bought a bottle and a I had a tasting. They also loved the atmosphere on the patio. Perhaps it was just an "off" night for the well dressed gentleman who greeted us. We will be back as all else was perfectly wonderful.
My girlfriend and I have gone there quite a few times; twice on our anniversary.
This past year the rib eye was cooked perfectly and it was paired with a fantastic, light sauce.
The pumpkin ravioli was fantastic, as well.
They have a very generous cheese course.
Their bread may be the best of any restaurant we have bee.
The patio is great for a light meal and wine during the summer.
