PAON Restaurant & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
Had a visitor from out of town so three of us took a patio seat (even with the cool night). The heaters did the trick....it was perfect, and not as loud as inside.
The wine list is incredible. If you don't find a wine you like at a price you are willing to pay, go to a beer joint. The wine I chose they were out of, so Steve brought another from the same appellation that was higher priced, and gave it to me for the price of my bottle.
The food was perfect. Sizes/portions were just right. The service was spot on from menu knowledge, timing of the apps to the meal, refilling the water to bread service.
Truly a great way to spend an evening.
Our waiter and his service was exceptional!!! That alone made the trip worth while.
From the food standpoint we were disappointed....The menu is very interesting with items and ingredients that wet the appetite. My friend and I each ordered one of the specials of the day described lusciously by our waiter. Unfortunately the results were not impressive......a shrimp dish where the shrimp, which were flavorful, were over cooked; the other a spinach salad that was supposed to include prosciutto and burrata cheese but was barely there and tasteless.
Though disappointed we did not take the time to share our critique with our waiter who I have no doubt would have wanted to provide us with an alternative.
Paon is our "go to" restaurant for any occasion. As former San Francisco people, finding a really good restaurant in North County can be a challenge. Paon is the best we have found for the ambiance, price and the FOOD. We really prefer it to any of the Cohn group offerings or Viggilucci's by far. Their duck or pheasant are out of this world, and the wine list is wonderful and not over priced. We are fans!!!
My first time here at this restaurant was a great experience. My date was Vegan, so the waiter recommended a few dishes that the chef made up special for her. Everything was great except the noise level was very high which made conversation a bit tough for listening.
This was a first date experience and there turned out to be two tables w/ 6 women each having holiday lunches. Well, the noise level was high to start and only grew worse as the wine flowed. I've eaten in quieter bowling alleys. The staff could have been more helpful and suggested seating at a quieter table to start and yes, I could have been more alert.
The food and service never disappoints. Creative, fresh food and flavors, an excellent wine selection and exceptional service. Not inexpensive, but worth it for a special occasion. It was our anniversary and they all made us feel very special. We try to go at least 3 times a year for a special dinner.
We hung out at the Bar for my birthday celebration - soup, salad, specialty chicken was featured and totally worth the reasonable cost...this is the place for us
Even the outdoor space looks inviting, heaters & ambiance, secluded view of passers-by and the street. Highly recommended by US!
I introduced your restaurant to members of my book club. It was my birthday and I was asked where I would like to go. I said that Paon's was my favorite restaurant. None of them had been there. They were delighted and enjoyed the dinner and the ambience greatly. We sat outdoors on the patio with the trees sparkling with lights. They enjoyed it so much, that we are going to have our Christmas dinner party at Paon's.
We very very pleased with the friendly welcome by the owner as we arrived. The staff and service was excellent. Although we dined indoors, the outdoor heated patio looked lovely for dining. The food was delicious. Particularly the short ribs. Best I have had anywhere. This is a neighborhood gem and also well worth the drive for anyone from afar.
Wanted a local spot for Thanksgiving to avoid the busy traffic. Sat outside on a lovely patio with fountain and heater. As usual, Paon did not disappoint. The food, ambiance and service were excellent. Parking in their lot was ample. Great wine list and nice selection of traditional and optional Thanksgiving meals. Kudos to Steve for another amazing evening.
Exquisite as always. The service is wonderful, the drinks are excellent, but come for the food. They always have dishes you can't get anywhere else. I had sweetbreads and pheasant. They also had venison on the menu. My husband usually gets the fish which is always perfect.
Although this is fine dining, it is not snobby.
My husband and I have been to this restaurant 3 times now, and have never been disappointed. The restaurant is high end and expensive, which is why we reserve it for special occasions. But if you are going to pay top dollar for a dining experience, you want the food, wine and service to be commensurate with that. Paon absolutely fits the bill in all three areas. While we have greatly enjoyed everything we have eaten there, our favorite by far is the foie gras - done to perfection! All in all, we love this restaurant.
The food was excellent. Had the salmon & ahi tartare which was totally different than the 1s I had b4. I ahd the duck but the leg part seemed a bit over cooked, the sea bass was good as well as venison. It was a good environment 2 have dinner w 2 best friends.
Really struggling to see how this landed in Open Table's "Top 10" for this year. It definitely wants to be a good restaurant, but the food just doesn't take it there. Other than a pretty great sweet potato puree garnish, everything was imbalanced in some way and just not enjoyable to eat. The butternut squash soup had no butternut squash flavor, the ravioli tasted mostly of Balsamic, the pork was bland and kind of daunting to eat and the duck breast was overcooked. It felt *a lot* like Vegas-style cafeteria food: trying to be fancy, but not. The prices were fancy, though. I would not go to this restaurant again even if I lived next door and everything was half-off.
Frankly, the KFC around the corner serves better tasting food for < 10% of the price (though the follow-on heart attack may not be the best value!).
Party of (4) had dinner at PAON on Saturday, November 4. French-inspred food was outstanding, and dining on the outside veranda was great. Wine list is long and has some stand-out selections from both Europe and California. We will be back next time we are in Carlsbad...if you want non-Italian, non-Seafood while in Carlsbad, this is your place!
Paon is a solid favorite of ours. We love their traditional-style escargot, gazpacho (might be seasonal), fish & steaks -- in other words, just about everything. Their menu wine selection is excellent, but it's fun to go into the adjacent wine shop and pick out something too! Definitely a special occasion place for the most part as your tab can get up there! But you will walk away with a good feeling of value delivered and a memorable evening.
