Panta Rei - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
We were able to make a reservation over the weekend, and luckily got seated outside which is where we wanted! The atmosphere was great, the amazing weather definitely helped play a part in it. The food was good, portion size was good, and I would definitely come back to this again. We came here to meet a few friends (4 of us total) and the noise level was great.
The menu was really limited. Service wasn't consistent and took time when I wanted to order. I ordered the bruschetta, it was good but the mozzarella was just plain sliced on the side. I've had better mozzarella from the supermarket. The involtini was cold when served and tasted bland. I heard the table next to me also comment similarly when thy left have their pasta. The focaccia didn't look like focaccia it was the same as the calzone. Overall pretty average.
This restaurant has my heart. I moved to San Francisco for work from New Zealand as an timid 23-yr-old, who had never dined alone in a restaurant, let alone lived solo in a big city, with not a single local person to call familiar. I landed at noon, checked-in to my AirBnB, and decided to take myself out for dinner in this new town I had to quickly learn to call home. When I walked past Panta Rei, the first thing I noted was it's prime corner location, and clever architecture designed to seize every inch of sunlight the day had to offer. The second thing I noted, was the Maître D' noticing me. He gave me a smile, then asked if he could tell me a bit more about why HE loves the food at Panta Rei! And he continued to do so, mostly in Italian, then translating it in English for me. His passion and authenticity sold me to not just grab a solo-table, but also let him decide my entire order. Considering how friendly the service staff were, I didn't feel like I was dining alone at all!
My absolute favorite was, and still is, their Tiramisu. Don't leave the restaurant without trying it, because I promise, your visit will be worth it :-)
Likely the worst place to go in North Beach. I can only think the good reviews are from tourists who aren't familiar w the better NB restaurants or people who have no idea what good Italian food tastes like. I had been years ago when I lived in NB and was underwhelmed. Of course I got sucked in this time by the 1,000pt reservation and should've known better. They have this offer to get people in the door bc the food is just not good.
I had the salmon, my husband had the pizza. Holy semolina. Not the kind of pizza you're hoping for in NB. My salmon was overcooked and while it had grill marks, I don't think it was grilled. I don't even want to think about it. Dinner for 2 was $85 after tip which was a complete waste of money. We won't return.
The dishes we ordered were flavorful with fresh ingredients. I had the risotto with white asparagus. My husband had the gnocchi with marinara. We also shared a Caesar salad. We were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would recommend highly.
This is a very average restaurant. So many great Italian restaurants with fantastic homemade pasta, this one is just OK. There were at least 12 empty tables available and the hostess decided to seat a loud party right next to us. We couldn't even hear one another, so we finished our meal quickly and left to have our dessert elsewhere. We can't think of a reason why we would ever go back again.
Service was poor at first ... took forever to get a server. But when we got one, he was attentive and since I also speak a little Italian, it seemed helpful.
My friend and I were disappointed in the menu ... what we saw online in their website did not match what they actually served. For example, we were looking for the clams and mussels listed on the appetizers. The pasta we ordered was delicious, though.
Ok wine selection if you order a bottle. By design? Drinking glasses are not spotless. Got eye rolls from the waitress and the bartender when we asked for clean glasses. Forgetful waitress does not do the cooking team justice. Side of marinera sauce was cold. What lured us to this place was the menu posted on the Open Table app... only to learn half of the items were no longer available for selection. Not awesome, only... eh.
Super cool place to have lunch sitting outside in North Beach. The menu was simple, but delicious. The food was reasonably priced, and our server was very attentive. She actually kicked 2 diners from outside to the inside because we had made special reservations for an outside table. That won us over! Actually, everything she did was at the right pace. We had a long leisurely lunch but she checked with us frequently to see if we wanted anything else. We would / will eat here again.
My husband and I love this restaurant especially when you can sit outside and people watch. The food is delicious, the staff friendly and efficient and The prices are fair for the food quality.
The only negative is the happy hour drinks which cost less but they are half the size of a regular priced drink.
I used to come here quite often, good drinks and food, nice ambiance. This time it was complete 180. They screwed up on drinks... super salty potatoes, under cooked salmon with frozen spinach. We ordered crab pasta and hey served a few shredded pieces of crab meet that my 4 year old son finished in and asked for more(that's how small portions are) What kind of Italian place is his if you don't serve seafood pasta. No clams no mussels, really?! Sad sad sad...Don't recommend at all :(
Great food and service. Staff was great- offered recommendations and really handled all of our needs. Food is made in house and very fresh. Atmosphere is good later in the evening for quieter conversation and people watching, but is a little louder during the dinner rush as one would expect.
It was a surprise. We made a reservation on a whim, just because we have always seen a happy crowd in the place. The surprise was the excellent home-made pasta. We had a fettuccine bolognese and a papparadell with shredded duck in brandy sauce. Both were just great. We will be back.
I've been coming to Panta Rei for almost 9 years now. I lived in San Francisco several years and now live in Nashville, but I always make it to Panta Rei. They have friendly servers who are Italian and make great menu recommendations. I'm a big fan of the gnocchi dishes and also the Tre Paste dish which gives you a tasting of 3 pastas. They have a reasonably priced wine list and very delicious tiramisu. It's a great spot in North Beach so give it a try!
Your resturant exemplifies the meaning of what a resturant is supposed to be, and that is very welcoming, and genuine. Me and my wife loved this place, and will be back again soon. We are also referring this fine establishment to the people we know, for a great Italian fine dining experience......Which also has a surprisingly valued price point for this level of quality and flavor. Our server Melissa by the way was the best, a real asset to our experience.
