Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant - Minneapolis Ratings and Reviews
Pancho Villa is our family's go to spot for Mexican on Nicollet. We have season tickets to the Childrens' Theatre so it's a great before or after theater meal. The staff are helpful even when the restaurant is busy and the place is quite kid friendly. We love the chips and salsa (first bowl is free) and their food is tasty.
Had a family dinner here - and I thought the food and service was excellent. My niece had been here on a busier evening and said the service wasn't as good, but we were there on a quiet night and they were very attentive, even to the 3 month old baby in the group. Food was excellent and very authentic Mexican - even had guacamole made tableside with some spicy jalapeños in it - it was excellent. Tortilla soup was a hit, so was the Red Snapper (head and all). I was visiting family and friends (I'm from AZ) and I definitely will be back again next time I'm in town.
I had my birthday at Pancho Villa. I didn't even mention to them that it was my birthday, but they saw presents my friends brought and came over and said since it's my birthday all my drinks are free. They also brought a free dessert with a sparkler and a birthday shot. On top of that, the food was excellent and the service was quick. I would definitely come back!
We went here for a large group birthday dinner and it was SO MUCH FUN! Free drinks for our birthday girls and great food. The service was a little slow because they were understaffed, but our waitress was apologetic and efficient. At the end we got flaming birthday shots, cake, and sombreros. Great for a slower-paced ladies' night!
Terrific meals in fun atmosphere! Didn't even know about the 2-for-1 tall draft beers special until we got there -- thanks to our speedy and friendly waiter, we drank well!
TIP: There are 2 rooms -- the main room is a little warmer and more lively ... the second room to the left is a little cooler and quiet if you need to have important conversation. Table-side guacamole was DELICIOUS!! Enjoy :)
Easy, fresh, authentic Mexico, simply presented and delicious. The seafood options are great - fresh oysters, whole snapper and tilapia, sea bass filet, the latter 3 with a choice of preparations - I like the Vera Cruzana, light with olive and a bit of spice. A reliable Mexican choice for those who don't want false-gourmet or americanized Mexican food.
Our table was not ready at our reservation time although there was plenty of open tables. 2 servers were assigned to our party of 19. Servers took drink and food orders randomly therefore items were served as they were ready. 4 people ate before the rest of us were served. Drinks took too long and food took over 45 minutes.
Staff was eager to seat is and the place was almost empty. Overall it was run down and smelled of cleaner and something bad underneath. Ordered Mpls nachos and overpriced margaritas - nachos covered in wet onions and almost no cheese - chicken on them was ok. Won't be going back.
The broth was flat, the chicken was bland. I was expecting a sour & spicy soup and did not get that. The server was very friendly and surprisingly the place was "dead". I have had better tortilla soup elsewhere and if I go back, I will order the enchiladas.
I invited a group for my boyfriend's 21st. It was a fun experience but it was a school night and I felt bad for keeping my friends for two hours since we had to wait forever to even order, two people got their food after everyone else had finished, it took another unnecessary amount of time for them to get us the checks and collect our cards.. and it was not that busy. The birthday boy did not even get his order in the first time because he was forgotten and had to go up and tell the waitress his order. My girlfriends would have appreciated knowing about the 2 for 1 happy hour on margaritas before they spent 9 dollars each on mojitos. It is a fun way to celebrate a 21st other than that with the Sombrero, flaming shot, and pretty good cake.
Great service and great food. First time coming here and won't be the last! We went as a birthday group and they made sure to make him feel special. Got to wear a sombrero and got sung to by a bunch of the workers with instruments and all! Then he got to spin the wheel and he won a free meal so we will be back as soon as we can. Great find and will recommend to anyone
We went for lunch on a Saturday and there was a good amount of seating which was nice, we did not have to wait. The place smelled heavily of cleaning products. I thought that it should maybe smell of delicious food being cooked, but I guess it means the place is clean. That is something I guess. The server came over and asked where we parked and then told us that we cannot park in the lot. Bad idea to have people wait until they are seated before asking where we parked. We parked on the street so they were fine with that. Apart from that, the restaurant was freezing cold. I kept my coat on and so did most of the rest of the people I was dining with. If I come back in July and it is still that temp, then that would feel amazing, but when it is still cold outside, I like my restaurants to be heated properly. The server came back with waters that tasted like the cleaning products they use. I admit that I like a clean restaurant, but not when it leaks in to the water. We ordered food and it came in a timely manner which was nice. The food was good overall. My pork was a tad dry and one of my fellow diners did not like the chips, but other than that, the food was yummy. The salsa was great and so were the tortillas. However, the server was not very pleasant. She did not smile or really even pretend to care we were there. She rushed about and basically went through the motions of being a server. When your income is based off of the generosity of strangers, I would consider being nice to them. She never came to give us more chips even though they were supposedly free refills and only refilled out water glasses once despite that fact that we could have used them to be refilled at least 2 times or not 3. Overall, not a bad dining experience, but in the future I would not stay, I would take the food to go.
Visited Pancho Villa at 7p last Friday and was very disappointed with the overall experience: -
-Despite the restaurant being mostly empty upon our arrival, we were seated RIGHT next to another table that was already occupied for some reason
-We were not told that the only Margarita's that were 2 for 1 were the house Margarita's, so we expected our specialty Margarita's to be 2 for 1, and they were not
-Ordered taco's with shrimp and they arrived with Carnitas
-4th person in our party received their entree 9 minutes after the other 3 of us had, with no apology or comp'd items from the staff, despite the late arrival
This was not my first visit to Pancho Villa, so I was expecting the same great food and service as in times past. That sadly was not the case. The waitress's seemed annoyed that we were there - put out by being asked to wait for our whole party to arrive before placing our food order and in general just not very pleasant. Then when food arrived, one of the dish's was sent back - went downhill from there! Then to top it all off out of 8 checks, 4 needed to be sent back because they had extra drinks added to them. One person wasn't even drinking alcohol and there were charges for this. So I guess I won't be going back again.
Pancho Villa is a great place for groups to go and celebrate birthdays. 6 or more friends order a meal = birthday guy/gal get free drinks and free food and a chance to spin the wheel for more prizes. Always a good time! Friendly servers, good margs and yummy food! It's a birthday tradition for our friends!
