The Panama never disappoints, especially when the weather is nice and I can sit outside and enjoy a spectacular salad.

Right smack dab in the middle of the residential section of San Rafael California is a cutie pie little hotel/restaurant, the Panama Hotel. Its a happening place and I was so wanting to try their restaurant especially for Valentine's Day.

My wife and I arrived to the din of the guests having fun. The hostess greeted us with a big smile, confirmed our reservation, and promptly showed us to our table.

As we walked to our table I noticed three things, 1. the portion sizes seemed large 2. the couple next to us had neither bread or rice or potato's on their table, another zero carb couple, and 3. sadly once again every one in the restaurant was younger then us. Its a trend, Ouch!

Hardly any time passed before our most attentive waiter greeted us, and served us our glasses of wine.

We each ordered steak and the tuna ceviche as an appetizer to share. The tuna ceviche looked incredible, served with rather ordinary store bought looking chips.... perhaps Doritos? After my wife took her first bite she looked at me as if to say, "God must have been the fisherman who brought us this fish". My wife is an easy grader, she is married to me. We split the ceviche right down the middle. I didn't finish mine, very unusual. The only two times I don't finish my meals, if I have the flu or its twelve hours before surgery.
Ceviche C to C-.

Next we were served our generously sized steaks. Our steaks were done to perfection, medium and medium rare respectively. The taste was okay but the steaks seemed fatty and had more then their fair share of gristle. Not our best choice.
Steak C to C-.

Will we be back? Don't know but on this night everything was perfect..................................except the food.

Panama is my go to place for special occasions, a mid-week pick me up or summer lunch on the patio. I always leave in a good mood. The food is fresh and healthy. The service is excellent. The decor is kind of funky elegant, comfortable and charming.

Arrived at 6:15 for conversation before live music at 7. Charming decor and friendly staff. Seated in dining room as weather seemef too chilly for the enclosed patio. Delicious char-broiled burger and stuffed jalapeno dish for dinner. Live music was an enjoyable trio. Outstanding creme brulee for dessert. Finished our meal as the musicians took a break. A lovely evening the night before Valentine's Day.

I had the butternut squash soup and the half avocado stuffed with crab meat, both were delicious. My husband had the burger and garlic fries and he loved his meal. It is a cute, kinda funky place.

Service was great, and some of the food was also. The avocado/crab appetizer was spectacular. The calamari salad was very good. The pasta dish was very good. The pork chop and its sauce were delicious, but the shredded whatever it was around it was strange. It was like eating a pork chop with a raw salad of carrots and jicama or something. I had expected some kind of cooked vegetable. So if they'd serve the chop with something nicer it would have been a perfect meal for all of us. The pinot noir I ordered, having asked for one on the sweeter side, was delicious, but, it had a heavy sulfite content and I got a stuffed nose half way through my glass, unfortunately. But I always enjoy Panama Hotel and this was the first even slight negative meal I've had there.

This was a lovely find. It's not far from downtown San Rafael, but it's enough off the beaten path. We ate inside (there is also an outdoor patio), and the place has plenty of character. The server was nice and attentive.

We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night. It was about half filled, including a party of four seated next to us that carried a very interesting conversation. The restaurant is on the quiet side, at least at 630 on a Saturday evening, so conversations carry.

The calamari appetizer was a good amount to share, and I really liked the cilantro-lime vinaigrette.

She ordered the filet of salmon and liked everything except the beets. I had the full order of wild mushroom ravioli, which were very tasty. Both dishes were reasonably sized: more than enough to fill us, not enough for leftovers.

Easy downtown access. The hotel provides an added option. There is live music 3 nights a week.
The servers and helpers are friendly and efficient.
The menu items provide a wide range of creative choices.
The food was delectable and the wine/beer choices complimented the food.
The prices were quite reasonable and all in all a future visit is assured.

My friend and I meet here every once in awhile for lunch. It has become our go-to place because the food is very good, the atmosphere is nice and the menu is varied. The citrus dressing on my crab filled 1/2 avocado was excellent! My friend really enjoyed the fish tacos. We'll be back.

Prawns tasted of fuel used to fire them; walnuts on salad were mildly rancid; mushroom raviolis had almost zero mushroom flavor, were bland, under-filled, and there was NO buerre bland sauce. Asked waitress who confirmed shoulda come w/sauce and shortly later brought me a cream pitcher filled with icebox cold sauce. It wasn’t warmed up!! Wow! That dish coulda been compted but wasn’t. The waitress did bring me a glass of Prosecco “to day she was sorry.“ Steak my daughter got had chunks of cartilage and fat. Best and only truly good thing was the crab atop avocado salad. Have been here about 10 times over the past 30 years as a special occasion restaurant. And based on past experience this Should’ve would’ve could’ve been another meal worthy of $150 smackers.
Naaaaaaaahhhhhh, so much for telling others about this destination restaurant as it will no longer be a destination for this diner.

I feel cared for the minute I walk into Panama. I love the food, the friendliness, the fresh warm bread rolls, the playful decor combined with white table cloths and mini lamps on each table. It' my favorite Marin restaurant.

Sadly I chose this place for my friends 30th birthday. We were seated in an ally way when you first walk in. That was the best part of our visit. I let the hostess know right away it was a birthday and she acknowledged asking the name. Waiter came on the scene and From there it was all down hill. Waiter basically forgot about us and we waited long periods to order food...dessert ..to get the bill...we waited for everything! My friend even had to get up to find the waiter after long extended wait. Last we ordered dessert for the birthday and The creme brulee was supposed to be the happy birthday treat. It came sloppy melted sides and cold in the middle. No happy birthday..no candle no nada. When mentioned to waiter..he said "oh..ya shoulda told me..i woulda brought a candle". WORSE..they close and lock the door around ten...and with an 8pm reservation we were still there. In that alleyway....people were still wanting to come in and out and because they lock the door..people would stare at us through the glass tapping to get us to open door. We played doorman twice while eating. $150 LATER...NO THANKS...There are better restaurants for your money.

We have been to the Panama Hotel restaurant many times over the years.
It has a funky ambiance which we like, and we love the food. It is an eclectic mix of cuisines.
I had the Pork Chop and my husband had the stuffed Poblano Chile, both delicious.
Although we enjoyed ourselves this time, we found our server to be rather surly. We talked to friends who ate there recently, and they had the same waiter who they also described as "surly".

I had forgotten about this hidden gem in San Rafael and wanted to take some friends to lunch who live in San Rafael. We all loved our food, our service and the price. It's just so unique and so delicious. We live in San Francisco, but always in Marin too and will bring more friends to this gem. Thanks for a great brunch, Christine P.

I've been here several times, and always enjoy it. It's a quirky, comfortable, interesting place with great ambience and originality. Parking is easy and service was good - the sort of place where you are not constantly interrupted by the wait staff, and your plates are all removed when everyone is finished, not whisked away while you still have food in your mouth. Portions are very generous so go easy on the starters. Dessert is divine.

Good Location.
Great Menu.
Comfortable seating.
Easy parking.
However, food does not approach the exciting complexity of the menu. Kitchen is heavy handed in its food prep. Sadly disappointing. It’s time for the chef to retool and retrain.
