The food was incredible. I had the day boat scallops and the orzo with lobster mushroom sauce was divine, and my husband got the wagyu beef. We both thoroughly enjoyed our entrees. Everything was cooked perfectly. We tried the foie gras special for a starter. Warm chocolate cake on the house for our anniversary, which we would have ordered, it was delicious. Service was wonderful as well. Very happy with our anniversary dinner.
Really good place. Great menu. Execution a little sloppy here and there. Standouts were the white asparagus black truffle soup; truffle risotto; truffle parmasean pasta. Halibut special could have been good but the halibut was overcooked and dry, not even salavagable by the delicious porcini mushroom sauce. Hamachi appetizer was way too mushy. Needed some crunch factor. The fish was fresh but the dish was not creative at all. Service was amazing. Wine list was amazing. The place is just off by a degree on the food, and with such an amazing menu, I was disappointed the execution was a notch below what it should be. I recommend this restaurant but I also recommend that when ordering you should show your server this review so the kitchen takes a hint and perhaps gets in sync with the fabulous service and wine. At the end of the day you could put truffles on a shoe and it would be GREAT. It was everything without truffles that needed some work!
Don’t judge a book by its cover. This place has signage which looks more like a car rental shop then a fine dining restaurant. Upon entering we immediately smelled the baked goods and saw the flames of bananas Foster at the dessert station. We were seated immediately however our waiter was obviously overburdened and had way too many tables, so it took longer than expected to get served. That being said, when he did arrive he was profusely apologetic and attentive. I ordered the vegetable plate because I was not very hungry and my husband ordered the halibut. Both were excellent. I was not a fan of the house martini, and without even me asking, our waiter gladly took it off of our bill, which was very classy. For dessert we had bananas Foster which was delicious. Overall, we would go back again.
One of the best dining experiences in San Diego....every time. Superlative food created without missing a beat. The food is always perfect. The service is great. Chris is one of the all time great waitresses, Steve (manager/sommelier) takes wonderful care of us and Jeffrey is always there to infuse his over the top but warm personality.
Pamplemousse Grill was a great place to dine. The service was excellent - loved having Chris as our server; she really goes out of her way to make the dining experience special. The atmosphere is nice; like the big booths, and the amount of seating is just right (tables are not crammed into the space--you have elbow room between tables to be able to have a conversation without feeling like you're talking to the people seated next to you). Overall the food was excellent, however, there was a mix up in that my dinner (scallops) was supposed to come with a chiffonade of spinach, but it came with large spears of broccolini instead. When I asked about the vegetable substitution, the kitchen ended up sending a bowl of soupy whole cooked spinach (with awful seasoning). The scallops and toasted orzo were delicious and my husband's steak was delicious. I had the lobster, avocado, Pamplemousse appetizer, which was delicious! Big chunks of lobster (I'd say they put a whole lobster tail in the dish, so the dish was expensive ($28)). On the down side, the price was very high ($65 for the steak). Also, the menu doesn't mention that the lobster appetizer has grapefruit in it, which is an important ingredient to exclude on the menu because people who take a certain type of common medicine cannot eat grapefruit--I guess we are all supposed to know that pamplemousse=graprefruit. Lastly, the bar seating is extremely limited, and we were told the only way to receive happy hour drink prices was to sit at the bar (and no seats were available, so we had to be seated earlier than we planned, where happy hour prices are not available). All in all, it was a very good dinner, and I would recommend the restaurant for a special occasion.
The oysters were good, although a bit salty, but overall good flavor. I was hoping for a variety to choose from, but none was offered.
I had the Scottish Salmon for my main course & it was over cooked & bland. I would have sent it back, but I was on a date. I chose the restaurant & was a bit embarrassed with my choice. It’s not the 1st time that I had been there, the previous experiences were much better, perhaps the chef has changed.
Very unhappy with the experience. I made a VERY big deal about wanting my fish Overcooked when the order was taken. Mentioned it several times and the other diners with us chimed in as well saying how I really liked my fish well done. When my meal came it was way UNDER cooked. They offered to take it back to the kitchen to cook it some more, but by then the others would have been done eating, so I declined. No adjustment was made on the bill either. Also, one of our other diners was celebrating his birthday and his fish was so small he thought it was an appetizer. We had been to Pamplemousse several times in the past, and had always enjoyed it. Not anymore. We will not be returning and will not recommend it.
We were in town for the Breeder’s Cup horse racing championships. A local friend recommended the restaurant...all we can. say is WOW! Very nice decor in Del Mar, a cool Oceanside City and some of the best food we’ve had anywhere! Our entrees were pork chop, black cod and duck - all were fantastic. Extremely creative and fresh ingredients, amazing flavors. Lobster ravioli appetizer was superb- not the usual heavy cream sauce but a very light, delicious and unique version. We can’t say enough positive things - everything we tried was awesome. We loved it - just go! You won’t regret it.
My second time eating at Pamplemousse. We ordered starters off the tasting menu and they were terrific (two different pastas with truffles). My partner had the duck and it was a bit dry and disappointing. I had the miso cod and it was very good. Wine options are many. Really appreciate they provide a separate page for wines under $75. Service was good.
The food was good but the servings were small and it was overpriced. The service was atrocious and we had to ask for bread several times and never got water refills. I has wine and was never asked if I wanted another glass. No one asked my guest if her steak was cooked to her liking. I would recommend avoiding this restaurant
The quality of the food and the breadth and depth of the wine list are a cut above most other fine dining restaurants and the service has always been impeccable during this and our previous meals. The waiters know their wine list, and Steve the sommelier can offer additional advice without pushing into the priciest selections. In fact, there are many delicious offering under $100 as they don't have exorbitant markups.
I only wish they were located on the oceanfront and closer to my home!
I think this is by far the best restaurant in the San Diego area. The owner/chef is very charitable and kind, and is present in his restaurant. He is a shining gem of a restauranteur and the food is literally perfect every time we dine there. We are always satisfied when we leave. Don't forget the "piggy" sugar cookies at the end..a great end to delicious dinners.
It was our first time at Pamplemousse, during Restaurant Week. The food was fabulous and prepared perfectly. Portions were on the large side, actually, and we took some food home. We particularly enjoyed the duck entree (leg and breast, prepared differently) and the melon-and-prosciutto starter. We'll be back@
A nice evening with friends and worth the drive. Staff was great and friendly. Accommodating to our needs and made sure we had a good time. Bar was great after with the big college games playing, so a good mix of high end, great food and fun scene. Only issue was my steak was over-cooked.
Shocked that the seating was very tight, the restaurant loud, and the very expensive food unacceptable and no sense of intimacy. French? I lived in France & was surprised that that food was called "French". Duck was dry, food not impressive at all to our party of 8. Disappointing to say the least.
