Palomino - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
I was there for a corporate dinner with a smaller (8 people) group. Our 15-minute early arrival was easily accommodated, service was very good, everyone was pleased with their food and I looked like a hero for selecting it. I wished the noise level was lower - it was a bit loud and made us feel like we were screaming at each other at times, but it really did not detract from our experience.
Wow! I had previous sworn off Palomino's because for the price you pay, the portions you got were pretty small. Yeah, quality over quantity, etc., but there's something wrong when you leave the restaurant hungry. Anyway, stopped by because of their new/revised menu promotion and was pleasantly surprised. Very pleasantly surprised! My dining companion and I had their market fresh salmon and their half chicken under a brick lunch entree. Both entress were FABULOUS!! Exquisite flavors, great presentation, nice sized portions, etc. If anything spoiled my experience this time around, it would be the coldly efficient wait staff. Not very friendly but efficient. To summarize, I'll be back to savor the rest of Palomino's "new" menu!
We had a party for nine celebrating a friend's special birthday. This was mentioned on two
occasions days before our reservation. Nothing was done even with a bill in excess of $300.
We had to ask for more bread, coffee served cold, etc. even though the place was basically
empty. Food was wholesome but not memorable and portions were generous.
We were greeted enthusiastically upon arrival then seated immediately at a window booth. Randy was our server and he was attetive but not not intrusive. The food was delicious -terrific corn bisque soup then tasty crab sliders were enjoyed by 2 of us, chicken parmesan and wild salmon with fresh asparagus also cooked to perfection for the 2 others and the presentation was appealing. These dishes were topped off with shared Sicilian Donuts and delicious bread pudding fr dessert. All in all a delightful birthday celebration experience.
The staff was friendly and we enjoyed our food very much, but the service was spotty and the low light levels made reading the menu difficult. It was also very noisy. Our waiter got our appetizer order wrong and after the meal was over we sat for a good 20 minutes hoping to order coffee and desert. I caught his eye a couple of times, but he didn't come over until I actually raised my arm and waved. The person who served our plates could not speak clearly enough to distinguish between pork shank and pork chop, which meant we weren't sure (in the low light) if we'd gotten the right meals. Fortunately, my friend and I could laugh about it, but I expect white linen service in a white linen restaurant and Palomino did not deliver.
I've dined at the Palomino several times. The food was excellent as always. My dinner partner who had not dined here before loved it. My only somewhat negative comment was regarding the noise from the bar. There was a large crowd in the bar watching a Giants play off game. It was extremely noisy (shouting, yelling) in the resturant. Once in the dining room it was less so, however I did not expect this in a restaurant of this caliber. I will dine here again.
The calamari appetizer was very good, the white bean appetizer also very good. We each had a Caesar salad which was above average, but the main courses were disappointing. Two of us had the pork loin which was so salty I could not finish eating it. Another comment that we all made was that the writing on the menu was so small, combined with the darkness of the dining room, it was very hard to read the menu.
We had a Gift Card that was wanted to use for several years - and this past Friday (October 15) was the date that we settled upon. We had a reservation for 7:45 PM and were seated within 2 minutes of that time. Once seated - our server came by and took our drink order within 5 minutes; came back with the beverages in another 10 minutes; then took our dinner order. We waited 30 minutes (!) after placing our order to see any BREAD or APPETIZERS that we had ordered. Granted - the restaurant *WAS* busy, but the wait was inexcusable. Our server would come by every 5 minutes (or so) and tell us that our order was "on the way" - but we didn't get ANY food on the table until close to 8:30. Tables around us seemed to have the same problem too.
We visit Palomino often and have always enjoyed going there. With that reason I planned my son's birthday party there. With 12 of us, we were expecting a very nice diner. The food was very good but the service was pretty disappointing. We had to keep asking to see the menu, refill water, bread, etc. Waited over half an hour before orders were taken after the appetisers. There was 1 server for our table but she was busy serving other tables as well. Dishes were not cleared away after meals were finished. The total dinner took over 2 1/2 hours. We ended dinner with out desserts or after dinner drinks because the dinner took so long. We think Palomino is a good place for small groups but for large parties, it's not recommended.
the drinks were terrible, very little alcohol, we thoutht because it was happy hour but we were not charged for happy hour price, therefore not acceptable for a full price drink
service was slow even thought the waiter was nice and was trying his best. the desert had nothign to do with the name (it was supposed to be a Tiramisu but it was no similarity).
food was average
I received a coupon for Palomino's new dinner menu and decided to give it a try. They have gotten rid of all the dishes they were initially known for and are instead concentrating on very expensive steak and fish. This seems odd given that Waterbar and Epic are right across the street and far better known for high-end dining. Palomino prices aren't AS high, but the dishes aren't as good either. The more casual offerings like the mushroom soup and chopped salad are as good if not better than ever, though. Service was a little forgetful. I just don't see them making a successful move to destination restaurant even with a nice view.
We drive up from San Jose to eat here for special occasions and to meet family in SF. The parking is great which starts the evening off right. We have never had to wait for our table and have been seated with great views each time. The wait staff has been excellent each time. They know when to approach and when to leave you alone. While the bar is usually crowded the layout of the restaurant allows for a quiet dinner. The food is high quality and is what really draws us back each time.
This is really a restaurant for tourists or for pre baseball game drinks and bar food. The restaurant ,especially the bar scene is very noisey. The food is mediocre, lacking in quality and presentation, with prices comparable to Boulevard in San Francisco.
Although the service was friendly , I was very disappointed in the overall experience. We will not go back.
Slow service. New menu disappoints (veal - fried and tough, scallops -over cooked and bland. sides uninspiring in every way). Plus, way over priced (definitely not fit for foodies). For the price you can do so much better for a nice dinner somewhere else. However, great views - go just for drinks and bar food and of course the view.
Although the food was decent (better in previous visits) the service was awful. It was awful starting from the extensive time to simply greet us through the entire lunch. Drinks were late and noone bothered to check how we were doing once lunch was served. One of the orders failed to include the requested side salad but by the time the wait staff showed up, we were finished with the meal. Additionally, to a person the table thought the food was "better" the previous times we went there for lunch.
The restaurant recently changed its menu to much lighter and less expensive food. While this was not what I expected, in general the food was fine. The view of the Bay Bridge is still there, of course! The server was courteous and knew the menu, impressive since the changes had only been made the week before. I would have recommended dining on the outdoor patio, but there's a major problem with gasoline fumes due to the street next to the patio.
It was our first time there (three of us) and we had a great time!! The wine list was really nice and the prices were reasonable considering it is San Francisco and especially when you think about the quality of the food. We are looking forward to going back!
