Every time I go here it somehow is worse. The first time I was blown away by the food and service. The second time was good but the food wasn’t anything exceptional. The last time was awful. The waitress stared at me and my date from three feet away for the entire meal. Our table was also half into the kitchen so we had a hard time talking over the noise. We went for restaurant week and were only there a half hour after opening for dinner and the food was luke warm at best when we got it. The whole dinner, from the moment we sat down untill we left, only took 40 minutes so it felt incredibly rushed. I don’t think I will be going back for a while.
We visited Palio during restaurant week so the value was very good.
The restaurant was packed, the food was good, but it's just not our "style".
My husband and I both ordered the stuffed chicken. It was very good, but the accompanying potatoes and veggies -- mostly yellow and red peppers had too much of an oily coating. The same was true for the side of spinach we selected. It wasn't a strong buttery flavor, so I'm not sure what the component was.
However, when a restaurant offers wine by the bottle, the servers need to be trained on opening the bottle properly. It isn't hard, requires a training session or two and a good corkscrew.
We had a LOVELY young lady as our server, but with the wine bottle sitting on the table it
literally took her a minute or more just to get the foil off the top. I gently offered
to help, which she thanked me for but declined. While I appreciated her willingness to keep
trying, for guests who are accustomed to opening wine it becomes very uncomfortable to sit and watch this!
After another two minutes or so to get the cork out, we had our first pour.
Sadly, Palio chooses to use cylindrical juice-glass type glasses for their wine. I really don't care for that...unless perhaps I'm in a quick pizza place ordering wine by the glass.
The staff is friendly, the place was packed and there was a line at the door (fortunately we had early reservations.) The folks waiting all seemed to be in the under-30 crowd, tho I did notice some folks seated who were older.
May not be a top choice for me, but it is definitely a well-loved Ann Arbor institution.
We went for restaurant week and had a very nice meal. It was a great value but they seemed to need to turn tables over. It was rushed and we had a three course meal with a cocktail and wine in under 45 minutes.
The food was very good and the place was fairly quiet. It is someplace we go to rarely and will continue to be
Food was outstanding! We ordered from the restaurant week menu. Server was attentive and friendly.
Kitchen (dish room?) noise was disconcertingly loud where we were in the back seating area. Also the music was not very “background” and hard to talk over or hear the other person’s words. Happily, when we asked to have the volume turned down, they did so immediately :)
Pasta dishes are fantastic, and the desserts are very good. I had the amaretto chocolate mousse and it was wonderful. Only issue we had was the table was obviously a square one that had leaves to lift up to make it round, but the leaves were unstable and the plates were teetering on an incline down into several guests laps. No disasters but it was uncomfortable. Overall, this is one of our favorite spots for the kids' birthdays and we had a great meal.
We visited Palio, on December 14th, 2017. It was my daughter’s favorite Restaurant to go to in Ann Arbor. It was her birthday. She herself, did some research for birthday deals, we spent most of the day, enjoying her birthday. The festivities would end with dinner at Palio. We had two reservations, acccoring to the manger, when I made the a reservation online, I needed a table for 12, I asked why. The manager replied with, “it wouldn’t let you make the reservation, because we don’t have a table that big available. We will do the best we can to accommodate your party.”
Which was great! I thanked him and all was well. When we arrived, our table was set together, thank you for that. The restaurant itself was mostly empty when we arrived. Service was slow. Food was very greasy, our server was patient. We have a loud family, we enjoy birthdays, we sing to each other, as we sang at Palio. When asked the manger for my daughter’s birthday discount, he asked for a birth certificate. I don’t walk around with birth certificates in my wallet, it’s an important document, in which, I’m sure your company may know, what a pain it would be to have it replaced in case it becomes lost or stolen. So we don’t carry it. But honestly, WHO DOES?
I was told by your manager: “We can’t give your discount. It’s policy that we verify the birthday with a birth certificate. I won’t be able to discount your bill.” I replied with: “My daughter is turning 12 Today, I’m
Sorry I didn’t realize we need a birth certificate to show you, this is her favorite place in town”
Manger: “Mam’ we Can not discount your bill.”
Our total bill must have been close to 300dollars and your manager refused to discount a mere $8. Our server was tipped very well. According to our bill. It boggles my mind, that, A manager, A person representing Main Street Vendors, would treat us that way, and refuse a small discount. I’m writing because of the upset it was caused that night, and how Unwelcome we felt, by Manager
I am not a "foodie" so take this with a grain of salt 😉 It seems to be very authentic Italian. In fact, that may be my only issue. Because I don't speak, read and can not pronounce Italian, making a pick is a little difficult. The new electronic menus (with pictures) does help, but still, (my problem) I have to spend some time paging to find what I'd like. I had Pasta Di Vino Con Salsiccia which was billed as "spicy" but I found it to be pretty mild. My wife had her usual favorite Penne Arrabiatta and loved it! I asked the waiter to bring me whatever wine he'd recommend for my dish. What he brought was really good. I loved it.
So It's a great restaurant (probably lost on me) but I think it'd awesome it you know what your doing!
We always have a great meal at Palio's and they are our restaurant of choice when we attend The Ark (which is about 3-4 times a year). I always make reservations requesting a booth. This visit they sat us in the tiny two seater booth right next to the restrooms , kitchen, and server set up station. The minute I saw where we were being seated I asked for another booth or table. I was told "No, sorry this is all we have." We thought "Wow, why make reservations several days in advance to be seated in the worst spot in the house???" The table was extremely small and it was irritating having all the hustle & bustle going on around us. Other than that our meal was great as usual and service was good.
It was overall an unpleasant experience. It was a busy Friday night so we had made a reservation. We were told they were running a bit behind and waiting for tables to get up. 30 minutes later most of those waiting had cleared out and similar sized groups were walking in and seated ahead of us. No one seemed very apologetic. Finally we got seated and my chair had a dirty puddle of water that I almost sat in. The hostess barely said sorry and moved it to another table (never cleaning it), where another person almost sat in it! We waited another 10 minutes for anyone to help us. When they came we ordered everything at once, drinks and food, since we had plenty of time to review the menu. Then the wait continued. It was 1 hour past my reservation time and we had just received water. No bread, and no sight of wine and a single draft beer we had ordered. All of a sudden someone is trying to deliver entree’s to us but we were confused as we had not received the appetizer or salads we had ordered. The food runner just looked at us confused and went back to check our ticket. It was our food and he proceeded to deliver it. Moments later our salads and then finally our appetizer arrived. We kept everything as we were hungry, frustrated, and just trying to finish our experience. The food all tasted pretty good, it was just such a disaster to get to that point. Nothing was offered for our clearly frustrating and poor experience. Someone needs to better manage their reservations and customer needs, it will be awhile before I go back again.
We took out granddauhghter for her1tth birthday; there were seven of us. Service was a tad slow but that was inderstandable considering it was First Friday Festivities, Midnite Madness, and a home basteball game. All in all, food was great, enjoyed by oldest to youngest. Always loved going to Palio's.
We ate here on a football weekend, so it was more crowded than an average weekend, but they've been doing this for years so they should have it down.
Our table was ready soon after our reservation (but not so for many others who were waiting WITH reservations) but we felt like we were sort of 2nd rate all night. First of all, the other tables had ipad menus...we had an old (dirty) laminated one. Second, we had to ask for our waiter several times. He forgot a salad, didn't refill our waters, etc.. Just felt like something was "off".
The food we ordered (and received) was fine. Nothing special, just basic good Italian food. We usually linger after a meal, but were ready to get up and leave after this one. Probably won't return since there are so many other options to choose from.
