About Painted Pony
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.
If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.
The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

Painted Pony Ratings and Reviews
We enjoyed an wonderful dining experience, and highly recommend The Painted Pony. The staff are exceptional. Our selections included the almond stuffed dates, ribeye with Stilton fritters, and the ooey-gooey chocolate cake. So delicious and expertly prepared! Also the Pony's pinot noir was lovely.
Order one pasta dish and it was undercooked. We let the server know and ordered two other dishes. The steak was really really good but the chicken was just ok. The side dish to the chicken was not to my liking either. We were there for our anniversary and unfortunately paid over 100 dollars for one great dish. Not sure if the special occasion selection gets passed on but there was no mention of it.
Painted Pony was a wonderful dining experience. My wife is gluten-free. While the menu does not identify gluten free options, the waiter and chef were very helpful and accommodating to alter dishes to meet our needs. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is quiet, intimate and relaxing. I would highly recommend the Painted Pony for that special occasion or a relaxing night out.
Have been meaning to try this restaurant for a long time. It comes highly recommended and I was not disappointed. Overall our experience at Painted Pony was excellent and above that the service truly was beyond our expectations. I will surely be recommending this restaurant to friends. Thank you for a lovely evening.
EVERYTHING about this restaurant is unremarkable.
The atmosphere is staid and boring.
The pasta was undercooked; the steak overcooked. The timing of entrees, right on top of the starter and salads, that were not finished.
The wait staff smug and poorly trained. Removing plates that were partially finished (see previous comment.) Not refilling beverage glasses. Waiter not pouring wine from bottle when glasses were empty. Waiter was hanging out at bar on his iPhone and chatting with co-workers.
The place was cleared out by 9:40 on a Saturday night. Now we know why.
Will not return.
My husband & I have a hard time finding a restaurant we love & this 1 is a find!
The ambiance is wonderful, it’s quite & the food selections are fantastic. I suggest reservations are a must. Our server was by far the best that we have ever experienced!
We will be back!
We were passing through St George and decided to splurge on a nice meal. We read about the Painted Pony so we gave it a try and were very pleased with the entire experience. Our dinners were superb and our waiter could not have been more charming and knowledgeable about the menu. It was a delightful evening!
Food as always was exceptional and the service top notch...some misunderstanding of a request made 3 months ago on my reservation as to where we wanted to be seated in the restaurant was almost not honoured and no guaranatee that the table would be available to us at our upcoming reservation two nights later, again having requested that table 3 months prior to the date. Rather unfriendly policy in my mind considering my request had been made months in advance. As a result we cancelled the reservation due to this lack of cooperation on the part of the hostess.
Wonderful as always--we try to get in a meal here every time we're in St. George. Truly some of the best food in Utah. There were so many great options we both left a bit on our entree plates and had to take our dessert to go!
There was some kind of festival down the block, so at the end of our meal it got a bit noisy, but not the restaurant's fault!
We began our vacation in St. George and chose the Painted Pony because we didn't know how difficult it would be to dine on a weekend without a reservation. The food was so good, we made arrangements to eat there again as we headed home. Every dish was delicious and the menu planning was quite creative.
A delightful dinner with delicious food and a fabulous server named Kelli......we were vacationing in Saint George and picked this restaurant from a traveling magazine recommendation and we were so pleased. Make sure you try the stuffed dates for an appetizer! Rack of Lamb, Duck and Filet were out of this world!
This place is a hidden gem and I do mean hidden. This restaurant is tucked inside a rustic complex of buildings on the second floor. Once we found it, the experience was wonderful.
Our server John was the perfect host and guided us through the menu. I chose the carrot jalapeño soup for starters while my wife chose the bacon wrapped almond and Stilton stuffed dates. Both were amazing.
For our entrees, I chose the rib eye while my wife chose the tenderloin. Both were expertly prepared. Mine came with green beans, new garlic potatoes and two Stilton fritters.
We finished by sharing a slice of Key lime pie that took us back to our time living in Florida.
Great for any type of special occasion. Not really good for children as the clientele tends to be business and professional but Painted Pony is one of my favorite places to have lunch for a nice quiet lunch with a group or just a couple of people. The food is fabulous and always pleasingly plated.
How do you write a review for a disjointed experience? We were seated at a table that was literally blowing air in our face. When asked to move, she said that all table were reserved. By the time we left (with a close to $300 bill for 2 people since we like to eat and drink) over half of the tables were empty. The front desk service is inadequate to say the least. Our wine (Vie di romans Pinot Grigio) is one of our favored wines and we were impressed that they had it on the list. Our server was pleasant and attentive, the food was good. Unfortunately the front desk person ruined our anniversary dinner
Everything about this restaurant is terrific -- the wait staff, the ambience, and, most especially, the food. The dishes were very creative -- the onion soup served in an onion is a notable example. The lemon soufflé was outstanding. This was one of the best meals we have had on a 5-week road trip - and we have had some pretty terrific meals.
