For the most stylish and refined Japanese cuisine in Oakland, Ozumo is a can't-beat restaurant that serves exquisite meals in its inviting setting. The shira-e kozara with carrot, cucumber, tofu skin and sesame-miso sauce and the kaisen sarada with prawns, snow crab, wakame seaweed, yuzu and cucumber, make tantalizing appetizer options. Some of Ozumo's specialty entrées include the jidori with sake marinated roasted organic chicken with house tare sauce, the wagyu steak with foie gras compound butter served in a cast-iron plate and the abara sweet chili glazed pork ribs with cilantro. Vegetarian dishes, such as the yasai Japanese eggplant with zucchini, shishito peppers, peas and asparagus and the agedashi tofu with shiitakes and okra in dashi, are also perfectly seasoned.

Ozumo's maki-mono are also popular, such as the house maki Ozumo, made with unagi, snow crab and cucumber topped with tuna, avocado and spicy aioli.

We arrived promptly at the open table reservation time and found the restaurant closed for a special event. Obviously open table and ozumo are not communicating! It was a major inconvenience and embarassing to have to get back in the car, give up the parking that we found, and go to another restaurant.

Booked a table and came there they were closed! Why is their appointment system open if they're closed on a Wednesday? Website or fb account didn't say anything about closing that day. What a waste of time

This restaurant has good food and a great atmosphere however it is a bit pricey but more than that I was disappointed in the service as they had more customers than expected for the evening and we waited a half hour for our meal and when we first sat down no one came over to our table to greet us until about 10 to 15 minutes later. I expressed my displeasure with the manager and she apologized but that's all she seem to be able to offer.

We dined before the Oakland Speakers Series, Tuesday evening. Because I was tardy in making a reservation for the restaurant, we were seated at the Sushi Bar. While the sushi we were served, I was disappointed not to be able to choose from their extensive and interesting dining room menu.

We have eaten here before, however, this time service was incredibly slow and they did not have two items on their menu that we were hoping to have. They clearly were not prepared with adequate staffing for the clientele which they should have projected due to the Joan Baez concert nearby. We were there an hour and a half and had to cancel an order so we could get to the concert on time. The manager did comp our 2 glasses of sake. This was a birthday night out and we had high expectations that were quickly diminished. However, we very much enjoyed the concert.

Food and drink were wonderful as always. A touch pricey for everyday, but it's always good. Atmosphere is also friendly, busy and yet quiet enough for conversation.

The overall experience was wonderful. The food was excellent, and we loved our server. However, towards the end the restaurant was very busy and the service got quite slow.

Had the pork belly ramen for the first time and it was excellent - very favorful. loved the soft shell crab maki roll. Would also recommend the sake flights - great to be able to taste seveal at the same time to compare the taste. Service was very attentive.

All the cooked items were wonderful! Gyoza and tofu in particular. The sushi lacked freshness. Could be because it was a Monday?? That was disappointing. Would go back for the cooked items and the space itself is beautiful!

We had heard great things about the restaurant so were excited to try it but we were largely disappointed mainly due to service which was extremely lacking during our meal . Our sever paid little to no attention to us disappearing for most of our visit . Our food didn't come up together so one diner was nearly finished before our food arrived and they completely forgot about the couple next to us apologizing and insisting another table must have gotten their order by accident. Umm ok. The food was ok but not as good as we expected . The sashimi was the highlight with the rolls all tasting more or less the same. We actually wanted to double check to make sure they were actually the rolls we ordered but we couldn't find our server so we gave up and ate it. None of the rolls stood out at all except for the fact that they were filling so at least we didn't leave hungry . I won't go back nor recommend it and I usually love all our meals eaten at nice restaurants. Overall a big disappointment .

Five office mates who couldn't get their acts together decided to celebrate all five birthdays at once. We each ordered our favorites - mine was the ramen. The current ramen is not as spicy as the previous version but still delicious and I prefer the current one. The flourless chocolate cake is no longer on the dessert menu - much to the chagrin of our non-gluten eating friend - but lucky for us, the chef had made a few that day and popped one in the oven! Our waiter was very friendly, attentive, and cooperative, especially when we asked for the check to be spilt five ways. It was a happy celebration!

This was our first time at Ozumo and it was DIVINE. We are a family of 4 with 2 kids (teen and preteen), and despite them being well behaved, you never know how you're going to be received. Especially since this is a beautiful, classy, "grown up" restaurant with incredible ambiance. Well, Ozumo was literally the nicest dining experience we've ever had as a family. As soon as we were seated, the manager, Mel, came to table to see if our daughter wanted crayons, and he was so completely gracious and hospitable that it just put us in a wonderful mood. Then came the excellent cocktails, and plate after plate of amazing food. We had a big variety of small dishes, and each was very well prepared, especially the kara-age chicken and the sushi. Also, the desserts were to die for. And the service was spot on throughout. We can't wait to come back!
