Food was disappointing but not bad. Flavors in the dishes didn't gel. Had to pick off burnt stuff on several dishes. Uni wasn't fresh.
Put twists on classic dishes that are not for the better. I personally didn't enjoy the cuisine at all and neither did my boyfriend. We went for brunch on a Saturday and there was also no one there!
About 20 minutes after being seated for our 6:45 reservation, I called the hostess over to ask about menus, since no one brought them to us. We basically just sat there waiting for our waiter/waitress. Our waitress came over about 10 minutes after we finally got the menus. Our wine 15 minutes after that. Food didn't start coming for another 15 minutes. Although the food was decent, the whole meal took way to long for a restaurant that wasn't crowded when we 1st arrived. This must have been a slip up on their part because the table next to us was served promptly after they were seated. I would pass on the duck again, it had a rather dry & strange texture that I wouldn't refer to as crispy. Overall the food was a little pricy for the few dished we had. Also not enough options for tapas style .
Fine food and service. Only complaint is noisy, bothersome music. Would be much better without any music.
Brunch was great. My Bahn Mi bowl was delicious & my friends grilled cheese with fig jam was delicious. However our server was rude & had an attitude. My friend asked for coffee & he brought it & then she asked for sugar & he brought me a cup of coffee insisting she asked for two cups. We said it was ok but we needed soy & almond milk & sugar at which he straightened up & breathed loudly. When I asked him if there was an issue he replied I'm trying to take it all in. With all the great restaurants in Santa Monica I'm not sure if I would go back to a place that employees rude service people. It was my friends bday celebration & it was very uncomfortable.
We were in West LA for business and Ox and Son surfaced on Open Table. My colleagues and I were intrigued by the menu and the actual experience did not disappoint. Everything we ordered was outstanding - heirloom tomato & avocado toast and octopus as apps; pork cheeks, hanger steak and the burger. Each was delicious in its own right. Beer & wine list is suitably funky and reasonably priced. Service was cheerful and helpful. Even on a Monday night the place was bustling and some might find it too loud, but it was not terribly so. I wish I came to LA more often!
found this on open table, had a business brunch, everything was great...especially the food which was beautiful and delicious
Charming restaurant, enough vegetarian options to keep us happy. Service was attentive and accomodating. Noise level was very high but fun
My sister and I went to celebrate my birthday! Our omelette was delicious and we enjoyed the variety of breads. We also enjoyed a kale salad. I will definitely go back to Ox and Son!
Good food and good service nevertheless drinks very very slow coming to the table. Bread came more than halfway through the meal. Kitchen very slow. I think when they get their act together will be a good place. Ways to go.
steak tartare is best I have had! Food is amazing!
We were disaappointed. Someone thought they were clever with the duck item but I thought it was a hodgepodge and not exciting at all. Mary could not find anything that appealed to her so
ordered the hamburger which was too salty and not very tasty. So we are not likely to return
O&S Burger was great. Fries were mediocre.
Very disappointed with the oysters.
This place was too pricey for the options offered and the dining area was too cluttered to enjoy the experience.
Good lunch and service ...
Sat outside for a perfect lunch. Food and service were truly exceptional.
Ox & Son is a WONDERFUL new addition to Montana Ave in Santa Monica. Great service, inventive and unusal menu, excellent food and great ambiance.
We enjoyed a few glasses of their red wine (great wine list) and loved their yellotail crudo, little gem salad, and hangar steak...all excellent and creative! For dessert we enjoyed the coffee cake with cinnamon ice cream...very tasty!
Many more dishes on the menu we cannot wait to try. We will certainly be back and look forward to our next experience at Ox & Son. Excellent 4-Star experience...keep up the great work!
Everything was delicious but the Sticky pig cheeks & black rice were phenomenal.
Creative chef. Great burger. Rich pasta Unusual ceviche. Lovely room. Terrific staff. Winner
I'm so excited for this addition to the Westside dining scene. Ox & Son made our evening delightful from the start. They caught the note that I had put in my reservation that it was our anniversary and our server made sure to wish us a happy anniversary. She was completely knowledgeable about the menu, the wine list and was completely approachable and sweet. The food was just beyond amazing. Every detail, every morsel, was delectable and well-placed. Can you tell I loved it? Can't wait to go back.
Interesting menu .fun night ... Great service ...
Hands down one of the best brunches in town! The menu is incredibly unique for all meals. Everything is fresh and flavorful.
Server was VERY kind, pleasant and personable, but service was painfully slow. There must have been a hold up in the kitchen. Took over 25 minutes to get 1/2 a dozen oysters, then another 15-20 to get our sandwiches. All the food was fabulous, once it arrived. I would not suggest going here if you are on a schedule or doing business. Seems like more of a leisurely lunch spot.
The salt and pepper soft shell crab was incredible.
The grilled octopus was also delicious.
Hooray! So glad to have a restaurant that serves *good food* on Montana.
The menu is typical of small and large plate bistros. The execution is not. The recipes are unique and delectable. The wine selection is excellent and unusual. A liquor license is being negotiated. We were especially impressed with the manager Bobby who knows what's going on and made us feel warmly welcome. Eat here.
We had a great, very friendly waiter. Our food was delicious and the music they were playing (mostly 80's stuff) was awesome.
We had a great time at this charming new spot on Montana. From the beer and wine selection to the friendly wait staff and delicious recommendations, we really have nothing that we would change about our evening at this great spot.
This Montana Ave spot is only a few months old, but was a welcome surprise. We tried it for a weekend brunch and were impressed with 1) the imagination shown in some of the menu items 2) the friendly and polished efficiency of the staff and 3) the complete absence of 'attitude' that plagues so many of the westside's new and trendy venues (especially when the exec chef comes complete with a glamorous media profile). If they can keep this up, we'll be back often.
Really great employees and a really nice time. Everyone was awesome and I had a great time.
Creative menu and great service! We'll be back. A wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
The oysters, steak tartare and uni were delicious. The cavatelli pasta was good but needed to be a'dente, the burger was good but a little overpriced even with truffle toppings. The wine selection was awesome.
Great location and I would definitely recommend it. The waiter had made some suggestions that we didn't opt for but perhaps try the pork chops or steak.
Ox and Son is fine, it just isn't anything special. It follows the recent cookie cutter trend of West LA restaurants- small plates, typical dishes ( a "crudo", an octopus, a hanger steak, etc.), different types of seating (e.g. the tall bar stools and tables in the middle of the room ), etc., etc. Portions are relatively small while prices tend a bit high ($12 desserts) . The $15 glass of red wine that was served was the smallest pour I have seen lately in a restaurant.
Fun, flavorful food! Ox and Son does a very nice job at taking seemingly traditional recipes and reinventing them in a new, creative, delightful way. Service was a bit careless but the flavor of the food made up for it.
Good food. Slow service (20-minute wait when not totally full). Small, girl-size servings. No bread while waiting.
Friendly, youngish crowd.
Noise level a bit high. Music too loud, too percussive and too monotonous, casts out all subtlety in conversation!--though a maitre d' was heard taking credit therefor...
We really enjoyed sitting at the tall table near the kitchen. We sampled and shared many dishes and each was unusual and unusually delicious. Excellent and attentive service.
I'll use any excuse to go back. This place is my new favorite restaurant. I crave the ham & corn cakes and the steak! Service is wonderful.
Stopped by Ox & Son while vacationing in Santa Monica. Located in a great area to walk and shop, Ox & Son drew us in for dinner from its outer appearance.
Staff was very welcoming when we arrived. Chris took care of us that night and all of his suggestions were incredible. Staff was very fun and informative, we could tell they all shared a passion for their establishment.
The prime beef tartare and Benton ham & corn griddle cake were over the top. Especially the corn griddle cake, that is a must!
We had oysters as well that were fresh and fantastic to the eye and palette. The accompaniments served with the oysters truly enhanced the flavor.
Our main courses were just as amazing. Wrapping our night up, we had both deserts that are made in-house daily. One was very clean and refreshing while the second was very decadent and savory.
We do not get to Santa Monica often but Ox & Son along with Brad's other establishments are on our list!
